The only battle tested data-link in Africa is Nigerian military top brass sitting in Abuja HQ, and watching live battle in Sambisa forest real-time video images and commanding/controlling a whole war hundreds of kilometers away.

http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/amosu-how-we-monitored-sambisa-military-operations-from-abuja/208413/

No country in Africa has ever done that in history.

Nigerian data-link works, that's the difference between us and SANDF
.

Again, SANDF LinkZa is more intergrated and more advanced

One platform beaming back images is about as advanced as the SABC

SIPRI arms database says you have an ordinary surveillance satellite, not spy. Then you have only one, so it sees only one part of the world at a time, it's not on-line real time surveillance like Nigeria that has 3 satellites spread over the earth. RSA is 50 years behind NIG
.

South africa has a military grade recon sattelight, recon is a synonym for spy

Nigeria has no military grade satelights

Your 3 satelights provide civilian grade imaging

No, SAAF has NO ISTAR capability, what you have is ordinary Recce.

F-7 jets carries Recce pod, does that make a jet fighter an ISTAR aircraft? No !

So NAF can call our F-7 jets ISTAR aircraft? Why did we buy ATR-42 and Beechcraft 350ER ?

SAAF Gripen carries the same Recce pod made for Jaguar jets, so NAF too cxan claim our 18 Jaguar jets are ISTAR aircraft?

"Easily integrated onto any air platform, the DJRP is a robust, lightweight, low drag structure with a combat proven pedigree on numerous aircraft types including Jaguar, Tornado, Harrier and Hawk and has been selected by the South African Air Force for Gripen"

https://www.thalesgroup.com/en/nited-kingdom/defence/air-group/isr/digital-joint-reconnaissance-pod

Recce pods do NOT make ISTAR aircraft, many jet fighters all over the world carry Recce pods and nobody is calling them ISTAR aircraft.....

SAAF is 66 years behind NAF, your toy Recce pods works on our old 1980s Jaguar jets grin grin

.

You and other hundred military writers have the tendency of referring to maritime surveillance as ISTAR aircrafts. That is wrong but I will have to admit that it is what is used for.

ISTAR is a task rather than an aircraft, just like you would refer to "eating" as a task of replenishing your energy level. ISTAR is as well a task of studying the battle field.

Just because you don't have a spoon in the house does not mean you cannot do a simple task as eating, there is always a substitution. That translate to ISTAR duties as well. Since SANDF has a data link it can always perform such tasks with the use of recce pods as we have seen with NATO forces in Libya.

Only because you are using a plane (ATR-42 surveyor) with built-in recce pods, so that makes you better in ISTAR. The gripen Reece pods are perfectly equipped to do what your ATR-42 does.

A perfect example would be that of a lap top with built-in Bluetooth ™ device and that which would have to use bluetooth™ dongles in order to share data but at the end of the day they achieve the same results. A lap top with built-in camera and the one that would have to use external accessory cameras, etc. Yet, they all achieve same results.

Stop talking about HP Laptop or Blackberry phone blue tooth .

You dont have any recon pods or Jaguars

Gripen can be configured for ISTAR - if you dispute that then you need a lesson in the meaning of ISTAR

ATR-42 is a high endurance MPA, it hunts pirates and cannot operate in a contested airspace

If an aircraft wasn't designed to fulfil a certain role, and you use it for that "certain role" it will put strain on that airframe.

The Gripen is a multi-role aircraft a lot has went into its design to fulfil those roles.

The F-7 is an interceptor nothing more.

It will be terrible in ground strikes, reccon, maritime strikes etc.

Nigeria doesn't have a dedicated ISTAR aircraft.

In Nigerian air force doctrine they might be called dedicated "ISTAR platforms" but they are not.

They were fitted with certain equipment to fulfil a certain role not to enhance them for that role. But to make them capable of fulfiling it.

The ATR 42MP Surveyor is an affordable maritime patrol aircraft, developed and built by Alenia Aermacchi from the airframe of the proven ATR 42 twin-turboprop regional aircraft.

Its main roles are maritime patrol for surface vessel search and identification, search and rescue (SAR), prevention of piracy, contraband and narcotics smuggling, environmental monitoring and disaster clean up (against oil or chemical spills), territorial water security.

As you can see the OEM(Original equipment manufacture) has stated its roles.

I can see that it is not long that you have come to know about ISTAR no wonder you are all places about this acronym as if you are speaking the language of heaven.

South Africa has ISTAR capability even without maritime surveillance aircraft. To do ISTAR is not a rocket science in Mzansi as we are a military technological giant in Africa.

A tactical data link will be needed to further integrate it with other platforms. Well it comes with its own data link to ground stations but the data will further need to be spread across all other platforms through the use of tactical data link.

Hence, Nigerias ISTAR is only restricted to one channel only
