agaugust: You and other hundred military writers have the tendency of referring to maritime surveillance as ISTAR aircrafts. That is wrong but I will have to admit that it is what is used for. ISTAR is a task rather than an aircraft, just like you would refer to "eating" as a task of replenishing your energy level. ISTAR is as well a task of studying the battle field. Just because you don't have a spoon in the house does not mean you cannot do a simple task as eating, there is always a substitution. That translate to ISTAR duties as well. Since SANDF has a data link it can always perform such tasks with the use of recce pods as we have seen with NATO forces in Libya. https://www.defencetalk.com/thales-reveals-new-istar-system-for-south-africa-29185/ https://www.thalesgroup.com/en/content/thales-reveals-project-cytoon-another-milestone-its-association-south-african-national |

FighterPilot:India's procurement system is messed up. They slashed the number of Rafales to make funds available for some local rubbi.sh jet. Denel was banned though the ban is lifted now, Rheinmetall is too now banned. |

FighterPilot: Stop talking about HP Laptop or Blackberry phone blue tooth . F-7 jet carries Recce pod, so F-7 jet = ISTAR aircraft? No. Show us ISTAR pod in South Africa, NOT a mere Recce pod, show us ISTAR pod . |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Patchesagain: 1:53pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
agaugust: Do you need a lesson in what ISTAR means? This guy thinks ISTAR is some godly platform that none can acsend to. When in reality, its pretty basic stuff... Hell the British did it in WW2 with Mosquito strike-fighters guiding Lancasters onto target over Germany 1 Like |

MikeCZAR: India is a shithole when it comes to military procurement. Its a goddamn mess. Apart from the Brahmos and their indigenous destroyer, literally every other single contract is an aboslute nightmare... and dont even get me started on the Tejas (my face when they develop a delta wing in an era of euro-canards and thrust vectoring) Pak-FA and Arjun are some of the most spectacular fails I have seen in a long time |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust: 2:00pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
FighterPilot: Dedicated ISTAR aircraft is what Nigeria has ! SAAF Gripen carries the same Recce pod made for Jaguar jets, so NAF too cxan claim our 18 Jaguar jets are ISTAR aircraft? "Easily integrated onto any air platform, the DJRP is a robust, lightweight, low drag structure with a combat proven pedigree on numerous aircraft types including Jaguar, Tornado, Harrier and Hawk and has been selected by the South African Air Force for Gripen" https://www.thalesgroup.com/en/nited-kingdom/defence/air-group/isr/digital-joint-reconnaissance-pod Why don't Nigeria use F-7 jets recce pods instead of spending $120 million on ATR-42 aircraft for ISTAR ? ISTAR aircraft don NOT use tiny Recce pods, they use GIANT SIZE RADOME....see under the belly of NAF ISTAR.....and show me such in SAAF ! .

agaugust: You dont have any recon pods or Jaguars Gripen can be configured for ISTAR - if you dispute that then you need a lesson in the meaning of ISTAR ATR-42 is a high endurance MPA, it hunts pirates and cannot operate in a contested airspace 1 Like |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by MikeCZAR: 2:07pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
agaugust: If an aircraft wasn't designed to fulfil a certain role, and you use it for that "certain role" it will put strain on that airframe. The Gripen is a multi-role aircraft a lot has went into its design to fulfil those roles. The F-7 is an interceptor nothing more. It will be terrible in ground strikes, reccon, maritime strikes etc. Nigeria doesn't have a dedicated ISTAR aircraft. 1 Like |

MikeCZAR: Nigeria's ATR-42 is ELINT compliant you retarrd. Nigerian Airforce beechcraft surveillance aircrafts are also dedicated ISTAR platforms. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust: 2:18pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
Patchesagain: F-7 jet uses Recce pods too, so F-7 = Gripen Dedicated ISTAR aircraft do NOT need configuration to do the job, the fact that Gripen uses romovable pods means it's NOT is made for ISTAR. Have you seen NAF needing to go fix Radome on ATR-42 before it goes to mission? No. Patches finally admits that Gripen is NOT ISTAR aircraft. It needs re-configuration to do ordinary recce 1 Like |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by MikeCZAR: 2:19pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
Henry120: In Nigerian air force doctrine they might be called dedicated "ISTAR platforms" but they are not. They were fitted with certain equipment to fulfil a certain role not to enhance them for that role. But to make them capable of fulfiling it. |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by MikeCZAR: 2:21pm On Jun 11, 2015 |

agaugust: The ATR 42MP Surveyor is an affordable maritime patrol aircraft, developed and built by Alenia Aermacchi from the airframe of the proven ATR 42 twin-turboprop regional aircraft. Its main roles are maritime patrol for surface vessel search and identification, search and rescue (SAR), prevention of piracy, contraband and narcotics smuggling, environmental monitoring and disaster clean up (against oil or chemical spills), territorial water security. Source: http://www.aleniaaermacchi.it/products-prodotti/advanced-surveillance-sorveglianza-avanzata/atr-42mp-1 As you can see the OEM(Original equipment manufacture) has stated its roles. Nigeria doesn't have a dedicated ISTAR aircraft. |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Patchesagain: 3:15pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
agaugust: 1. Compare capabilities - ATR is vastly inferior 2. Gripen can perform ISTAR roles |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Patchesagain: 3:16pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
Henry120: Your beechcraft are not ISTAR platforms They are VIP transports. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Patchesagain: 3:17pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
agaugust: 1. F-7 capabilities are inferior to those of the Gripen in all roles - especially recon 2. Gripen is ISTAR - if you dispute this then you need to be educated on the meaning of ISTAR |

agaugust: Your obsolete jaguar never had recce pods or else I will ask you to provide evidence. I can see that it is not long that you have come to know about ISTAR no wonder you are all places about this acronym as if you are speaking the language of heaven. South Africa has ISTAR capability even without maritime surveillance aircraft. To do ISTAR is not a rocket science in Mzansi as we are a military technological giant in Africa. We have a tactical data link and you have none. Your ISTAR capability is a waste because your platforms are not integrated. Your scrappy F7s do not see what your precious ATR-42 surveyor sees, so tell me how does it help you? SANDF has a dedicated militaty surveillance satellite and you have a big ZERO |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by MikeCZAR: 3:42pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
FighterPilot: Modern aircraft have data links but Nigeria doesn't have a tactical data link. Aircraft like the ATR-42MP have a data link and come with it but don't have a tactical data link. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 4:00pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
Henry120: So, is your beegeagle dreaming when they say this as highlighted below in italics: I quote: At this time, only Nigeria, South Africa and Angola possess any ELINT capabilities across the said region https://beegeagle./2014/04/15/both-nigerian-air-force-alenia-atr-42-500-mpa-surveyor-planes-now-elint-compliant/ |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 4:04pm On Jun 11, 2015 |
MikeCZAR: A tactical data link will be needed to further integrate it with other platforms. Well it comes with its own data link to ground stations but the data will further need to be spread across all other platforms through the use of tactical data link. Hence, Nigerias ISTAR is only restricted to one channel only |
