"mongrel" is not a breed name rather its a category of dogs that are products of several crossbreeding and nolonger have tracable origins. they don't have a named breed. they are then refered to as mongrel / mutts or crossbreeds.
All local dogs are mongrels /mutt but that isnt their breed name

its just painful that all the folks forming veterinary this or that or whateva...none of them ever thought of improving our breeds of dogs.

in case you havent noticed..
1. our local dogs are never vacinated yet they survive all diseases that kill these so called better breeds.
2. their health is fantastic
3. they eat anything...rotten dead animals and others
4. they even hunt animals...see the hunters dogs
5. they serve as rescue dogs in the villages..
6. they are loyal to death.
7. they are cool with family..kids et all....nice guard dogs
8. just like huskies..they survive the harsh conditions of naija...poor diet..no care and yet they are balling
9. they are very prolific ...can whelp up to 11 puppies.

r u kidding...most of these local dogs even survive snake bites....floods...serious physical injuries

if i have my way....most of our local dogs should be crossed with mastiffs of close traits and features.

imagine a cross btw our local breed and dogs like south african boerboels...carne corso...bull mastiffs..


i will love to have good dogs with size...temperaments and character like boerboels coupled with fantastic and diseases resilient health of our local breeds.

They all originated from Basenji, prolly cross bred with other Mongrels from across the Atlantic shipped into Naija by our Colonial masters.

Basenjis are not the local dogs we see everyday,Basenji already is a recognised breed in the dogs of the world,and the Basenji club has been in existence since 1939 in great Britain,though it originates from Africa,prolly egypt or congo,the Basenjis have their ears erect and their tails curl like that of a pig,their paws are different from other canines,ther middle toes are partially grown together
They come on heat once a year.
I once had a demand for the Basenji from a client and I had to source to import from Kenya so I gave up on it.
They don't bark but howls.
Their market price is quite high compared to our local dogs.

I don't think all local dogs are mongrel. The genuine LOCAL dog has distinct features. Although a lot have been mixed with other breeds to become mongrels. I believe these dogs were indigenous to Africa(or at least maybe West Africa) just that obviously they haven't been recognised and registered by the AKC. I was doing some research online and found a breed in south Africa called the africanis, looks similar to our LOCAL dog but I think they are a bit bigger.
