OAU and NYSC mobilisation



Honestly, the authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University really need to look into some things. How does a school retain its greatness? It is by seeing its products excelling in their different careers and endeavours.

I just want the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Bamitale Omole,
and the Governing Council and Senate members to
look into the aspect of delaying graduates unnecessarily for the mandatory National Youth Service
Corps.

Isn’t it bad enough that the institution does not run
a smooth academic calendar? A 4-year course runs for
five years at the university due to internal and external strike actions and precious time of students
are being unduly wasted.

Concerning NYSC mobilisation, graduates have to wait
for about a year or even more before they are
mobilised due to the inability of lecturers to get
their results ready in time and send to the NYSC.

We all understand the importance of time in some careers and most companies nowadays set age limits for employment and thereby this delay of mobilisation for the NYSC often truncates plans and goals of some new graduates as they are kept idle unnecessarily for a whole year. This in my own opinion is very bad of the school authorities.

The university authorities should emulate their close
rival, the University of Ibadan. Graduating students of
the latter in the 2013/2014 session who finished their
final exams in January 2015 were mobilised two months
after. I don’t know why the Obafemi Awolowo
University finds everything difficult.

Our future must not slip off our hands as we are
all aware that the completion of the mandatory
National Youth Service Corps is one of the prerequisites in getting a job in Nigeria.
