Nuclear power ke!

next chernobyl disaster site loading coz Nigerians lack maintenance culture

Once people hear Nuclear Power, they scream Chernobyl or Fukushima.. Forgetting that the causes of both are not grounds enough for us not to have either as the both causes are controllable factors.

If Nigeria continues solely on this path of Gas and Hydro turbines, then the Power crisis may carry on even to 2050.

No river in West Africa can give you such hydro capacity sir! Closest you can get is the Grand Inga dam project on the Congo in Congo DR.

You can chose to build 100,000MW nuclear power plant is anywhere in Nigeria (in you can raise the fund required), but you can't build any MW above what the river sources around you can provide for hydro power. Even having the water flow does not mean the topology will give you favourable location.

So China building 3 Gorges dam on the Yanges does not mean Nigeria, or West Africa has a "Yanges" to build her own.

Then Daura will have 24 hour light....and a host of industries.

And you people will be grumbling about ''political patronage''.

Nuclear power is here to stay. And yes...if GEJ had suggested it...I would have supported it.

Another phantom project to get long suffering Nigerians excited about 'constant power.'

Nigerian politicians are clever...when they sense tension and frustration building up amongst the millions of long suffering ordinary people, they throw another phantom project (that will never happen) up in the air to get people excited and hopeful and divert their attention from the latest bad news, ie N9 billion naira agbada allowance for legislators.

This strategy works like a treat. The politicians know it. And they will continue to use it. The only people who dont see the diversion are naive youths.

Nuclear energy has given us the power to produce more weapons than to produce things that can make the world a better place to live in. We have to become more careful and responsible while using nuclear energy to avoid any sort of major accidents. They are hot targets for militants and terrorist organizations. Security is a major concern here. A little lax in security can prove to be lethal and brutal for humans and even for this planet. Issues
1- is it just a Nigerian situation or why are all contracts in Nigeria overly inflated? $20billion USD for just 4800 MW of electricity?
2- I am afraid for Maintenance culture here. Nigerians can know how to vandalize and steal anything, electricity cables, transformer parts, blow up gas pipelines etc. Their ignorance won't make them realise the importance of staying away from a nuclear power plant. Even Japan is shutting down all her nuclear reactors after the calamity that came last decade

I'ld like to see the thugs vandalize a nuclear reactor, they' ll explain to God what happened to their vaporised body.

Well if PDP had done something more about power .....perhaps we won't have had to wait that long.

At least we know when APC will give us power. Unlike PDP that promised us 24 hours light in 2013....and then told us 'Sorry, we did not really mean that'' by 2014.

At least I am realistic that Nigeria won't solve its power supply problems now....I just don't like the lies we were told in 2013 that by now power would be sorted.

What I meant is we can have more of hydropower dams to increase our power generation. pls sir, why r developed nations considering a move frm nuclear plants?

No sir! We can't go about building dams everywhere. Mind you, I don't in any way mean that we have "enough" dams in Nigeria or Africa yet, but there's limit to how much power we can practically depend on dams for. Yes they look beautiful and support agriculture, but they are highly environmentally destructive, particularly in their downstream communities.

Developed nations are shutting down SOME of their nuclear power plants because of age, mainly. Every plant has a lifetime. When an equipment or plant approaches its lifetime, reliability reduces and cost of operation rises. Based on several technical, risk, economic, social and environmental analysis, the equipment or plant may be given a life extension (retrofitting) or wound down (obsolescence).

Note that UK and Germany are shutting down because they are investing more in offshore wind generation power systems, while Japan is constrained because of seismic risks. So everybody makes such decisions bases on individual's peculiar risks and conditions. So what's necessary for Germany/US might not be for Nigeria/China/SA/Indonesia/Brazil

Why do Nigerians have a penchant for the absurdity.
Why go for Russian technology that is archaic, unreliable and prone to disaster, Chernobyl is an example.
Why not go for Areva, the French nuclear giant that is the best on the industry.
Moreover why nuclear energy that will take a span of 10 yrs to come on stream, at the exhorbitant cost of $20,000,000,000 and the attendant risk associated with that industry. Ajaokuta,a steel mill that we cant complete and maintain but want to venture into nuclear.
For $3,000,000,000 Nigeria can build 6 gas powered stations for each of the geographical zones within 2yrs.
Buhari should better take charge and remove the remainder of Gej team that are still hell bent on shaping a dark path for this country

While I agree with you...Chernobyl was caused by human errors....not by mechanical fault.

Aaaargh! Too much ignorance here !

Read again, it is a BOOT arrangement, meaning it will be built , owned, operated by the Russians before being transferred to Nigeria after a stipulated period.

Mr knowledge!! what happens if the "stipulated period" elapses, can Nigeria still maintain it?

Before you answer, remember our refineries were BOOT too

Scientists don't maintain plants, technicians do.

Mr knowledge, you would have replaced the scientist with technicians besides there is no way a nuclear power station will run without a scientist in its employs

Why spend that much to build something that carries much risk, it's not as though its establishment is a complete solution to our power problems

We haven't been able to maintain our roads, our gas plants, our power plants, our refineries, even traffic light or street light yet we want to go nuclear

with our penchant for cutting corners, how do you think the nuclear waster will be disposed?

we have abundant gas reserve, why not focus on Gas plant construction/power station

Can't more hydro stations be built

And if you are thinking of Chernobyl....that was human error.

Fukushima happened because the earthquake of 2011 damaged the nuclear power plant's cooling system (and we do not have earthquakes in Nigeria. At least none of magnitude 7 and above on the Richter scale).

Because right now, we do not have the type of river that we can dam to produce electricity....plus topography is important. Ethopia is a mountainous country....with rugged rivers flowing from a height downwards. Nigeria? We don't have that kind of topography or even rivers.(We have a potential river in Cross River....but its source is in Cameroon....and if we do a dam there...the Cameroonians would promptly dam the river).

And yes...Nuclear costs money. Hence the expense.

Or else...we build six-seven gas stations...at the same cost....and producing the same amount of power.
