Why is no one seeing this as reckless and irresponsibly dangerous? When will Africans stop renting themselves out to evil and greedy Western elements? Which other country apart from us is contempleting nuclear infrastructure? And at such a cut throat price......?

And you think there are no safeguards now....especially as any new plant would be subject to IAEA investigation?

Lessons have been learnt from Chernobyl.

Please get it into that thick skull of yours that designing, building and operating a nuclear plant is not owning a MIKANO generator.

You dont go for second best when you want to build one.

Oga, cost of set-up per MW is cheaper with nuclear compared to solar. Solar is very costly and has limitations due to constrain of sun-hours. You must have backup system which is highly inefficient and vastly costly too; be it mechanical storage system or chemical (battery). Those countries you are mentioning (UK & Germany) are the richest in Europe, so stop comparing their choices with Nigeria's.

Same with wind farms. They are capital intensive. Do you know how tall is a typical 10MW single unit of wind tower/turbine is? It is between 80 and 120m tall, that's like 40stories building with its base usually of about 40feet across! Germany and UK are installing hundreds of those silent giants on floating platforms anchored to seabeds on their coastlines offshore. That's a multi-billion dollar project , yet only a rich country can at yet afford such "luxury".

Nigeria and every other third world country have no business with solar and wind mega projects, its not best use of our lean and scarce resources when we have alternatives of thermal, hydro and nuclear.

What happens with T in the BOOT is not my decision. It is a public project which is normally influenced by lot of unmeasurable factors.

Your refinery is not on same risk level with a nuclear plant, so what influences decision with one night not be same with other. I expect you to remind me again if Nigeria fell to Ebola virus when it got into the country.

Nuclear waste for every nuclear plant in the world is under direct supervision of IAEA. So calm down and tame your ignorance. I'm sure you don't know that oil companies here in Nigeria have been using nuclear materials for their operation since forever, yet I'm yet to hear of any disaster so far.

Technicians maintain power plants. I'm sure the nomenclature "technician" is hurting your ego somewhere. Note that what you call a technical is sometimes a PhD holder in quantum physics or engineering. It is simply the role he/she plays in the setup that matters. Plants runs with complement of several professional skills including accountants, tradesmen, technicians, scientists, administrators and lot more.

We are building more gas plants, but we can't lay enough gas gathering facilities as required for constraint of fund and time. Also is the risk factor of sabotage of these facilities. But nuclear plant does away with need for such expensive and extensive feed stock facilities.

Mind you, nuclear power is green energy. While gas is nonrenewable.

Bros where is ur town so that it will be located there since u are so much in love with nuclear power. Forget the issue of cooling system, it will be provided. I think ur people will honor u in no small way.

Yes sir! South Africa has nuclear plants. Congo DR has an old nuclear plant which I'm not sure of the state. I'm not sure about Egypt, but I will go through my library and confirm to you later. As matter of dact, Nigeria Energy Commission has a research nuclear power plant in Kaduna (?) which has been working for years.

Oh! I'm pleased my posts was found so appealing sir.

Make una continue dey blow grammar. For me, any pragmatic person with an understanding of the proactive measures it takes to maintain a nuclear facility and prevent accidents, and is able to juxtapose it with Nigeria's antecedents with provision of common pipe-borne water and maintenance culture, knows this is one babanla bad idea. An irrecoverable one at that.

Good to meet you bro!

Well, that's part of social risk we have to consider sir. But did that stop us from flying airplanes from Aminu Kano Airport ? Kaduna refinery still hasn't been bombed either, what about tons of food and meat coming down south hourly? If none of these things have been compromiaed, then it will take longer effort and bigger planning and dexterity to compromise a modern nuclear plant with its multi fail-safe designs.

So I would live with the risk. After all, INDIA too has a lot of mad terrorists tying to harm her. Ditto Pakistan. Test they all operate nuclear plants. So wetin come be our own problem?

this is a good plan. It shifts us off the pressure of Gas unavailability through pipeline distortion and theft. It places less pressure on the South South region as well, and allows them to progress as other states seek to progress.

This also solves a lot with respect to Power generation. Interruptions are fewer as long as there are no corners cut.

Good one!

Good observations. However, I believe you meant more renewable sources of energy. Nigeria is capable of being powered by Solar, Wind or Hydro. Replace each household petrol generator with affordable wind or solar or a combination. This will sustainably offload several KW from the national grid. Then follow up with power stations powered with renewable energy sources. Extend to transportation and industry...

As usual, Nigeria doesn't disappoint in being a tragic joke. We could as well go to Japan and get their nuclear plants for free as they realise it's time to move on from that, not to talk of Fukushima. 10X Fukushima will happen in this joke of a country and destroy whole communities.

While the rest of the world is moving towards solar and wind sources of energy which can be decentralised to a micro-level, up to each home owner being a power-generating plant, Nigeria is bracing for further government-control of our lives, with all the attendant corruption and negligence.

I thought it would be a no-brainer for the new government to work on a favourable feed-in tariff, and incentivising schemes not Nigerians to adopt solar power generation. I tell you my dear readers, that would instantly provide tens of thousands of direct jobs and hundreds of thousand in multiplier effect. We would have sufficiency in electricity in a matter of one or two years, with a marked improvement in MONTHS.

Nigeria is a joke. I keep repeating it. We are a cursed people who would see progress elsewhere and reject it here because we are not meant to live a good life. Prove me wrong

Aaaargh! Too much ignorance here !

Read again, it is a BOOT arrangement, meaning it will be built , owned, operated by the Russians before being transferred to Nigeria after a stipulated period.

Scientists don't maintain plants, technicians do.

1. I'm not sure of average rate at the moment, but nuclear plants are the costliest to set up among the popular energy plants. They don't come cheap. Consolation is that they produce the cheapest electricity of the lot.

2. Japan is shutting down because of its environmental risk profile I.e it is in an earthquake prone region, while Nigeria has a better environmental risk profile in that respect.

Other nations shutting down have better energy mix and older nuclear reactors/plants. Ours is new and based on newer and safer technology too.

It would have been a good thing for people of Daura, but nuclear plants are sited near large fresh water source for (tertiary) cooling of reactors. So that's why it is in Kogi (rivers Niger and Benue) and Akwa Ibom (Qua Oboe river).

No he will carry on with the national policy on energy mix and nuclear power generation. It is part of our national development programmes.

No sir. It is a national policy inducted under late president UMYA

Geregu is in Kogi state in Ebira (?) land. Calm down, it is a national asset. Stop reasoning like boko haram.

Read it again and see IAEA being involved. Building nuclear plants is not like buying Tiger or Elepaq generators. There are stringent statutory requirements and operational procedures to meet.

Hydro dams have their strong points, but they are not exactly environmental friendly and are highly susceptible to hydrological cycle and plenty of community related issues both upstream and downstream. Moreover, you need energy mix to improve your general reliability.

I pray and hope (and would lobby if I'm in such prime position)that one of the next sets planned will be sited between Imo river and Anambra river courses. You don't know what you are wishing away. Pls aclm down and atop reasoning like Boko Haram.

Many things go under project capital cost sir. You can't be sure until you see the breakdown. Most times, associated infrastructure, consultancy/supervision, and logistics make such costs swell especially in low developed environment like ours.

It is natural reaction to "hate" new ideas. Please calm down and adapt to change sir. Lol

Comparing Nigeria energy policy to Germany's is like comparing a poor man that has family of 12 and earning #18k minimum wage with Osun State ( :p ) and idle house wife to a senior manager in Schlumberger with a senior bank manager wife and two kids on choices of food: one has better options than the other.

This is the kind of posts we should be viewing on NL. Not ethnically-biased ones. Good job sir.

No madam, the spec is not included in the news piece.

I have learnt that mega power projects don't come cheap at all because there are many indirect components in it. Usually, those things inflate costs up to 200% or mor sometimes.

But this does not in any way mean that there shouldn't be revaluation of the project if need be.

Licensing of a Nuclear Power plant is in 5stages
1. Siting 2. Construction 3. commissioning. 4. Operation 5. Decommission
siting alone takes 5yrs while construction takes 15yrs so lets take it easy
no step can be jumped its not a Nigerian contract process where you can back dated documents

I wish you can appreciate the level of what we have here, rather than using Gwagwalada as a justification of why Nigeria is capable of maintaining nuclear power plant.
One of my criticisms of “Nuclear Matters” is the safety matters, too.
This “long, hard look” at nuclear power requires the scrutiny of aging atomic power plants that are more and more expensive to operate because the technology itself is antiquated and inherently dangerous. Aging nuclear systems and structures are requiring more oversight, more qualification, more frequent inspections, more expensive repairs and more large component replacement parts.
The question is, are we going to be that much advanced and organise by the time the nuclear plant is aging?

British people are very organised, advance with a strong maintenance culture. Yet, they are still dragging their feet in allowing EDF to build a nuclear reactor. That should tell you something. Please don't be deceived. we need all the facts and not some fantasy specifications Nigerian politicians and scientists are so accustomed to dishing about.

Issues
1- is it just a Nigerian situation or why are all contracts in Nigeria overly inflated? $20billion USD for just 4800 MW of electricity?
2- I am afraid for Maintenance culture here. Nigerians can know how to vandalize and steal anything, electricity cables, transformer parts, blow up gas pipelines etc. Their ignorance won't make them realise the importance of staying away from a nuclear power plant. Even Japan is shutting down all her nuclear reactors after the calamity that came last decade

1. The UAE is building the same thing at the same price now (u can Google it)
its a BOOT meaning Nigeria doesn't pay before rather the Russians would invest their money in building the plant then operate it to recoop their money while training and building the required competence locally and @the end of the contract period(15- 30yrs) they transfer the installation to the Nigeria.
2. A nuclear power plant is not like NEPA, the security levels and associated infrastructure cant be easily vandalized its like a military base.
to prove to you we can handle it google Nirr-1 to see how long a nuclear facility has operated in Nigeria without any incidence or accident
Have some faith in your country we have proven to the IAEA we are capable if not no one would even talk to you talkless of getting into a contract.
