Let her go and look for another job that matches her lazy assz, if she owns the place, she would prefer to lose her customers because she's fasting?

Sack her or give her the month off and don't pay her..

Let me believe that you wanted to type 'Thursday' and not 'Tuesday'
Maybe she is quite young and still feels the world revolves around her..
Sacking her might be the easiest but might not necessarily be the best.
Sit her down and talk to her, make her understand that its a business and not a Muslim religious body, and remind her that she is in Nigeria and not Middle-East or Saudi Arabia..
Give her a few days (say 3 days) to lazy around and adjust into the fasting ....

I work with Muslims, the first few days of fasting are usually the worst days when it comes to performances

When the Christian fast was taking place earlier in the year, did anyone get fired for fasting?

Why should anyone get fired because of the Ramadan fast?

RCCG does a 100 day fast from Jan-April yet, I have not seen or heard any company sacking staffs because of such fasting activities.

Each Manager/HR Specialist should take this into consideration that work timings and assignments should be redistributed during such periods.

I know fully well that Nigeria is a secular state but religion does and will continue to have an impact on the workplace environment.

This is a lesson to be learnt by the business owner in question. HE now will learn to plan his resources against future scenarios like this.

You can help her by making her close early. It's not really easy. But she shouldn't use that as an excuse to be lazy..
Let her know your stand by giving her a warning.

God bless your business.

The fact that you're asking this question means that Nigeria is developing, else you'd have fired her without care.

Like caseless pointed out, she has a right and you have to respect it.

You need to show understanding in this matter. Encourage her and see what the result would be. She might even be praying for you and your business all along hence the unusual great patronage you are experiencing at the moment.
God might be using this to test you as well. Pls dont go by her attitude now.

Are you kidding me right now? Will you let someone drag your business to the dirt because of religion? OP, please fire the lady so she would have enough time to do the fasting at home. Fasting is no excuse for not doing what you are paid to do. Simple as that
i'm sure if the girl in question is a christain, you won't say this.

Not to derail but I can't help but observe from your post that you are a Christian who married a Muslim. How did you approach her family as a Christian with your marriage proposal?

justmenoni:
I don't see that as a good excuse, my wife is a moslem and she still work, ur staff is giving you that excuse cos: u hv been to friendly with her or cos it's not a company such as banks, food production etc would she hv told the manager there that she can't come to work or perform her official duties?

Mind u I am a Christian and I do fast sometimes as well as go to work and perform my official duties, the only thing I might do is break at 3pm.

If she can't perform her duties then let her stay at home till Ramadan is over and employ someone to work on part time basis....

What if ur other worker did the same at the same time?? So ur.business will be closed down? Are u running an No?

U need to speak with ur staff's and let them understand business ethics is important than personal ethics and at such been religious should be ignored in a business premises..

Op if you go get Christian, moslem, unbelievers as ur staff..how u wan take manage them??

quote author=nedu2000 post=34918168]Open a laundry mart 3months ago with just 2 staff members. Despite our owning a big washing machine the laundry man's function is ironing, removing tough stains and operating the machine. The 2nd employee's task is to go deliver those clothes to clients, compliment the laundry man's job of manual removal of tough stains and reception work.

On tuesday evening,on my return for work took a detour to my shop only to see lots of clothes piled up unwashed!!the laundry man was trying frantically to remove the tough stains manually meanwhile the lady just sat down by the reception desk doing nothing!!

When I asked her why she was working or even gone to deliver clothes to clients her reply was...."i'm fasting"
In fury, I simply got my hands dirty and started doing the cleaning and delivery before I headed back home.

Pls NLders how do i deal with this? I feel i'm being "religiously backmailed" How should employers handle muslim employees who are fasting?

Can you bargain with her for this period of fasting? like: Can you work half-day and get half month salary then you get someone to complement her rest of day work then you pay the person too same half month salary and some other this you can think about, just to get your problem solve and beware Nigeria,
And what will happen to that person after Ramadan?
Do you think he/ she will want to leave...
Jobs are scares these days. And pple are not ready to leave the one that comes their way.

I don't think getting an Auxiliary staff is The solution because it may breed problem later.

the half-day/half month salary option seems cool but she'll likely not cooperate, how much work would she be able to sincerely put together in about 4hrs,not as if she's always been a hard worker prior....i really don't know what to do with this lady, and this is when God don bless us with a good number of clients this month
let her know your Stand. You can help her by making her close early. Shikena.

If you get an Auxiliary staff, think about what will happen after Ramadan.
Will he/she want to go

you people just don't read. Dangote na dry cleaner? Is he not an employer of labour? What does he do by himself? Is he the one watching over every company he owns that fast will make him to close them down? What's the connection of dangote with this topic?
The OP said her attitude started since fasting began, and not an everyday thing, so what's the basis for sack? He has a trusted hand who's under-performing because of fasting, so hiring he does not know what he/she will come with to the business is not the solution.

To me I think fasting shouldn't be an excus to stop working am a Muslim and I fast during Ramadan. I live in New York, Brooklyn and we fast for 18 hours, 3am to 8:30pm, yes I get exhausted at work but that won't stop me from doing my job. She Should just do her best and be a good worker or maybe u should allow her to close early and deduct it from her pay...

Pls get off my mention if you don't have better things to say. Do you know what handling business is all about? Do you know that customers move over to another of your competitor within a matter of seconds when your service delivery becomes poor overnight?

Someone wants to sit her fat ass lazying about all day, doing nothing and complaining that is due to fasting while CUSTOMERS clothes remain unwashed and undelivered and you are talking of unrelated!

@OP, you said the incident happened on Tuesday. Ramadan started in most places on thursday and in some, on friday.

What fasting did you say she claimed 48 hours earlier than the rest of the world?

Finally... someone said it all...

Unless Labour laws specify it, she has a right to Freedom of Religion but no right to lack of productivity. Any company that she does this in will offer her unpaid leave during the period of the fast and make a quiet note of it, the next time the worker messes up over any other matter, job gone rather than forgiveness ( which is why you don't hear bankers pulling this stunt she did). OP, sit her down and tell her you respect her religion, but you spoke to some Islamic teachers about it and you think the best thing she should do is to take an unpaid leave for the month of the fast. I don't feel she's a great worker (you said she wasn't impressing you before the fast) so offering her the option of reduced work hours doesn't guarantee she will still be productive.

Muslim countries don't shut down because of Ramadam.
this post does not add up.

treat them with care and love. Support them in times they need your support. Dont make it seem it is all about you and your business; put yourself in their shoe.
Since you have found the reason for her being slow in the discharge of her duty to be that she's fasting, just find a way to assist her or get someone to do that just for the month of fasting.
May God bless your business.

This is foolishh in all ramifications and its only logical to see the reasons behind your silly post by opening your profile
