Just when Nigerians were groaning over the non-availability of petroleum products, hope seems to be on the horizon.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said on Friday four oil refineries will resume production in July.

Spokesman Ohi Alegbe said the two refineries in Port Harcout would begin operations after turnaround maintenance, followed by those in Warri and Kaduna.

Alegbe was quick to alert Nigerians over the fact that all the four refineries even at full capacity, cannot meet up with our demand on daily basis.

“Even when the refineries work at full capacity, they can only produce around 19 million litres of petrol per day,” he said.

“There will still be a shortfall of about 21 million litres,” he said, pointing out that Nigeria consumes about 40 million litres of petrol per day.

Nigeria, one of Africa’s top two oil producers, is forced to import most of its petrol products due to its ailing refinery system, which generally runs well below capacity, sometimes at just 20 percent, due to neglect and pipeline sabotage.

Major cities in Nigeria are recovering from a gasoline shortage despite the end of a fuel distribution strike as fuel marketers, who are still not importing due to money owed them, have agreed to distribute fuel brought in by the state oil company, NNPC.

Alegbe said the turnaround maintenance for the four refineries had been ongoing since November.

The NNPC has four refineries, two in Port Harcourt, one in Kaduna and another in Warri, but have been non-functional for some time forcing the country to import petroleum products.

Half a loaf is better than none.

What we should do is expand the capacities within one year

By the time PMB is through with his mineral mining and agricultural reformations..i don't see how he won't be celebrated.

So much will be seen in the coming days...fingers crossed

Buhari must probe NNPC and the petrolium Ministry management. He need to know what has hindered the resuscitation of this refinary until when a new government come on board.

We need more refinaries. We need private investors partnership in creating more to address our growing population. Government cannot do it alone without investors who believe in the present government policies to participate. The 40million liter per day will keep increasing as long as our population keep increasing. Power must also be fixed cos its adding a large quota to the daily consumption of fuel.

Do you know what that name represent in Nigeria history? Total failure.

No mother in her right senses wants to name her child after the most cursed president of this country ever.

It takes four weeks to get rid of all the left over curses in Aso Rock before Gen.Buhari could move in, isn't that serious? Yes it's.

May God in His infinity mercy design your destiny the way Ebele Jonathan handle the affairs of this country. Amen. And op you ll equally say Amen.

lol. I believe if jona is still our president, that money for turn arround might have been cornered by some people, because they know that he has no balls to question them how they spent it.

GEJ remains the best we ever had.

Without noise and propaganda he attacked the root of Nigeria's problems.
Contract was awarded late 2012
http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/fg-signs-tam-contract-with-builders-of-refineries/106886/

The enemies of the country utilized propaganda to oust a working govt. We missed a great opportunity with GEJ and if the current Govt must succeed, their template cannot be far off

Imagine if we were self sufficient in Agriculture, automobile/accessories and refined petroleum products. ..... Our economy would have blossomed and naira would have significantly appreciated.

These are the three key sectors we spend our foreign exchange on. GEJ narrowed down on these sectors cos that is where the prosperity and employment of Nigerians lie. The agricultural sector is greatly improved, the car assembly plants are back and functional, the refineries which were dead for years are nearly complete for production.

With these three sustained, we won't be trading a lot with dollars and the demand would drop thereby strengthening the naira

Now the dumb ones amongst us have returned us back to the status quo. No direction......

However I must state that the refineries needs to be handed over to corporations to whom refining is core business. Govt has no business running those refineries otherwise it will go the way of NEPA, NITEL, Nigerian Railways, Nigerian Airways, NNPC etc.

Govt can go into joint venture partnership with major refining brands who will operate the facilities like is done in the upstream.
