Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, says the Federal Government’s financial standing is worse than the states’. Oshiomhole said this during a programme on Channels Television titled, “View from the top”. About 18 states owe workers salaries while many others have stopped all capital projects, following the drop in federal allocations caused by the drop in global oil price. However, Oshiomhole said the Federal Government’s was also struggling. He said the only reason why that of the Federal Government was not noticeable was because of the Federal Government’s easy access to funds. He noted that the Federal Government controls the Central Bank of Nigeria and can approve any amount of money for itself. The governor said the immediate past Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was largely to blame for the current financial crisis besetting the country because she failed to save for the rainy day. He said, “When analysts and commentators allude to the facts which everybody can see that many states, maybe as much as two-thirds of the states, are not up to date in payment of salaries, allowances and other obligations to their work force, what is not often stated is the fact that the Federal Government is just in the same bad shape. “The only thing for us is that under the immediate past minister of finance, they have borrowed rather recklessly in trillions of naira to meet the wage obligation of the Federal Government. “For example, Jonathan can be said to pay wages, only to the extent that Okonjo-Iweala borrowed from CBN, from various bond instruments, including drawing down over N3 trillion from pension funds. So, civil servant savings, what we call the workers’ capital in the trade union parlance, is what the former minister drew from heavily to fund the wages of federal employees.” The governor insisted that if Nigerians say governors were extravagant in spending and did not save for a rainy day, what about Okonjo-Iweala who was in charge of over 50 per cent of oil revenue. When asked to defend his statement in the face of Okonjo-Iweala’s claim that governors did not allow her to save for a rainy day, as they always wanted proceeds of the Excess Crude Account, Oshiomhole said the minister was only making baseless accusations. He said, “That is one-quarter of the truth. What you should have asked her is that if they assume that the Federal Government is a responsible manager who believes a rainy day is coming under Okonjo-Iweala and you have me and the 35 others who are reckless, you should have asked her where are the federal savings meant for a rainy day? “All the 36 states plus Abuja share 26 per cent of the money. This means for every N100 that Nigeria earns, 36 state governors share N26 while N52.6 goes to the Federal Government plus ecology and other deductions. “There are other organisations whose funds ought to flow directly into the Federation Account and they never flowed there – Nigeria Ports Authority, various institutions, the health sector, the maritime sector, NNPC, various agencies, the gas sector – all of these ought to flow into the FAC and they never got there. “The governors have control over their share which is 26 per cent. Mr. Federal Government has control of 52.6 per cent. Where are Okonjo-Iweala’s savings of the federal portion? If she can show where she saved it, then you can proceed to say she was right. She didn’t save for the Federal Government for a rainy day.” Oshiomhole, who served as the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress from 1999 to 2007, said the call for an increase in wages was legitimate. He said since the naira had been devalued by about 25 per cent, it would be unfair for Nigerian workers to continue to earn the same wages despite the rise in the rate of inflation. The governor urged the President to stop the importation of rice and other foods grown in Nigeria. http://www.punchng.com/politics/salaries-fgs-condition-worse-than-states-says-oshiomhole/ 1 Like

INTROVERT:thats hogwash; these guys are still into the blame game after all these while. If they felt things were so bad and unfixable, why did they decide to run for presidency. It's sad that they called and taunted the previous govt with words like "clueless" while in actual fact they are the clueless ones. They have done nothing to ease Nigerians pains; food prices are in the rise, fuel prices are still on the high side, the naira is crashing on the daily, boko haram menace is still rampant up north, violence is brewing all over nigeria; from the east, south south, west n north. Nigeria will never admit things are getting worst but would rather like photo gallery of the president... FOLYKAZE:if that's the case, jail all governors for their empty treasury cos their monies were paid to them in full and on time, so tell me what happened? These guys should take a cue from anambra state; 3 mega shopping malls being built simultaneously, mega city being constructed, massive road projects and they still manage to pay salaries on time.. With the same allocation with every other state 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Now more than ever, states should find ways of improving their IGR. The federal government has to take the issue of diversifying the economy very seriously. How can the entire country just get stuck on crude trickling from a tiny region in the country? Haba! This is totally unacceptable and unsustainable. 5 Likes |

liberty300: Yeah! And also to expose him and his party. Why this process of alloting fault to whom so deserve(i mean gej) is strange to you is because the transition has been from one pdp govt to another in the last 16 years. So they cover for themselves and no one was asking questions or asking his predecessor to return anything. Now that we have the opposition in place, keeping mute and not bringing up the flaws and mismanagement of our collective resources by those that were there before amounts to celebrating the statusquo , and this is not in tandem with the idealogy of the opposition. PDP and Jonathan brought us our knees and we can't stop calling their names. 3 Likes |

liberty300: Oga, no matter how you try to justify your comment, the truth still has to be told to the public. People need to know the level of degradation that the country has suffered in the past administration and perpetrators need to be brought to book. How can you milk a whole country like Nigeria so dry like that? Yet you don't want all these thieves to be exposed. 4 Likes |

This is another big lie from the APC. The FG operated a well disciplined budget by not diverting monies meant for salaries to paying contractors. The last 2 mths where the FG had to raise money for salaries was occasioned by blackmail on the part of fuel importers who demanded they get paid the shortfall owing to the devaluation of the naira. Whatever debt the FG is owing as regards to salaries is not up to the trillion naira mark and with removal of subsidy payments the 2015 budget can be easily achieved. 3 Likes |

You can tell from this man"s latest fixation on the federal government leaving his state, that he is gearing up for a national run or role of some sort after he leaves office next year, well if that is the case, then he is as dumb and stuupid as he is ugly. |

This Edo Bush Baby is still calling Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala name. May thunder scatter that your mouth that you use to call her name. We all remember Ngozi shouting on the need to save for a rainy day when the Biafran oil money was high but the thieving governors refused and insisted that all must be shared. They even took the Fed Govt to the supreme court on account of this. Now they have squandered the people's wealth and are blaming GEJ for the problem. How can a state be collecting Allocation for 8 months and in these 8 months he hasnt deemed it worthy to add up 1,2 or 3 months to offset the debt to the people. We are not even talking of capital projects. This edo bush baby should tell us where he got the money for his re-election bribrey and where he got the money to marry. |
