What If Buhari Somersaults? by James Febebebo by seguntheblogger: 7:17pm On Jun 24, 2015 |
As Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has an onerous task to perform and use the magic wand to turn things around across the country. Ceremonies like the one he had when coming in as President were almost pageantry and glamorous but he is left now with responsibility to transform Nigeria so that history will at least have a place for him.
Having rode on to victory on the strength of popular vote, President Buhari need not fail the people because hope is hanging on him as most Nigerians hope to see in his administration better days for Nigeria, in fact, such glorious years for the country struggling in the midst of abundance to strike at development that should be promising for all. But having said that, Buhari should be willing to work to add colour to his administration in the number of achievements made in his time in office while proffering solutions to massive challenges facing the people or else he will have been deemed to have failed and will certainly be disrobed as messiah king which most Nigerians have been talking about the new administration since Buhari was sworn in by the country’s Chief Justice.
But brilliant ideas will need to be driven to propel development and change or else they remain dormant without proportionate power or strength of character to pull them through. It is said that President Buhari has a lot of mettle, a lot of capacity to drive the expected change but where things fail to manifest, such conclusions and claims would only become like dry jokes without substance.
Having won the people’s support in the election that brought him to power, President Buhari should be in a hurry to perform such that people would see change coming into the country or how else will he hold or sustain people’s hope in him or even their claims that he is the saviour the country needs to manage her resources and eventually bring her out of the woods in a country polarized by religion, made unfit and unsafe to live in by murderous activities of Boko Haram and again in a land where corruption walks in daytime without wanting to hide her face for shame where almost everybody would expect some form of bribe to just have anything done or have something happen in their favour.
So, the question is, what if Buhari fails or what if he somersaults against the backdrop that he will take the country to its promised land where in Bible times for the Israelites, the Promised Land was to be full of milk and honey. But President Buhari as a former army general and military leader should not expect heydays in office in today’s Nigeria with its peculiarities and complexities in civilian administration where rule of law is king. But having said so, it does not however mean Buhari will fail woefully. Indeed, he shouldn’t fail.
Noteworthy is the fact that now is the time for the current administration to truly prove how much better they can handle or
tackle issues of administration. So, this is the time for action for the current President to fill in the gaps for the past administration so that Nigerians for their choice in him and not for the former President could breathe a sigh of relief.
All thanks though to the current President for talking tough against the dreaded Boko Haram sect which most said the former President either could not or did not do. However, with the prevailing attacks by the sect, there is even much more for the Buhari administration to do to successfully eliminate the existence of the sect in Nigeria’s northern states and in surrounding places beyond the country’s borders. This is why President Buhari should even talk less and do more to activate the process of restoring peace to the endangered zones, in the country’s North-East which had for so long been exposed to Boko Haram’s murderous operations.
But President Buhari’s performance today will determine his future tomorrow unless he wants to be voted out in the next elections to come after his first tenure. Having so said, Buhari has to be careful with his choice of ministers to help him drive his agenda for the country so that he will not be seriously blamed for any more problems the country might face or even for its lingering problems which perhaps Buhari might not fix quickly enough. However,
he has all the time within these four years to prove himself as the capable, incorruptible leader that they say he is or it would all be a fabled tale told by people subscribing to fantasies or daydreams.
Even in the international arena, President Buhari should do well to project the country’s image and also protect the interests of Nigerians in the Diaspora.
While he might have succeeded as former military leader, today’s Nigeria is different from the one in his military era meaning that Buhari should not glory over yesterday’s successes and do his utmost to counter claims from those who say the new President is battling to take off the ground since he assumed office.
In this panoramic view, most Nigerians can sit back and watch how it plays out with the Buhari administration at the end to sustain calls for his re-election at the end of four years if he chooses to recontest or to withdraw support for him for dashing our hopes. But for the meantime, President Buhari has started his journey, setting sail to take the country to her destination where we could have a new Nigeria with greatly reduced corrupt practices and even reduction in Parliamentarians’ over-bloated salaries and allowances as there are already moves by some government officials including the President and his vice to cut their salaries and allowances.
