Hey fellow farmers, I just took a step closer to my new animal farm. I will start with a snail farm then I'll add other livestock to the farm as we grow. I've built my Pen (snail house), and today I've put sand in the pen. I will be getting my brood stock before next week runs out, maybe Wednesday. Anyway see the pictures below how my pen looks like. Till next week update: Food business is Good business. NB: THE WHATSAPP GROUP HAS REACHED MAX NUMBER OF USERS. kunlesufyan: Thanks for mentioning me bro. Op, I love this concept but since it is a wooden pen, there should be shelter to prevent rain from soaking and spoiling the wood |

Neduzze5: I think that snails do well in a much darker environment, from the pic you uploaded, you are making use of a see through net, are you gonna make a darker covering for it or you'll leave it bare? |
Re: Snail Farm Begins - The Birth Of A Farm by Neduzze5(m): 3:24pm On Jun 27, 2015 |
opeaceo: I am not the op ooh.... I'm just another snail farmer but you really are spot on. You farm snails? |

Neduzze5:Exactly and I think the nylon should also be used to line not just the bottom but the walls of the pen... |

Re: Snail Farm Begins - The Birth Of A Farm by yazz09(m): 6:50pm On Jun 27, 2015 |
opeaceo: True, but after introducing them to the pen, i'll use dried plantain leaf to cover them. It won't only protect them from sun, but also rain falling directly on them. |

kunlesufyan: Nice suggestion. I'll try and Cover the sides with nylon too. |

Nice thread bro, I have a few questions to ask. I'm a novice to snail farming but I intend to give it a try in a short time. Pls how do you source their feeds? Like how many broods will you use for this size of pen? And how often do the snails require attention in a day? I'll be glad if you can also update us with the financial implications of rearing snails of this size of pen. Thanks. |

Re: Snail Farm Begins - The Birth Of A Farm by yazz09(m): 10:03am On Jun 30, 2015 |
austin2all: Its a good business to get into, but still requires all the business brain that you can muster. Ok for the feed, I use a feed formula to prepare the feed ( you can't find any kind of already made feed in the market). I am looking at stocking it with a 100 snails or more. Snails don't require much attention from you, just an hour early in the morning and late in the evening. To put the feed and water, then remove the previous feed and maybe dead snails. So basically 2 hours attention per day. Snails doesn't require a high financial commitment, with as little as 50k you can start a small farm in your backyard. if you want to start medium scale, budget like 300 - 500k (if you have a piece of land then like 200k). Snail farming is a good venture to go into, but do your research very well before delving in. Don't go in without a been convinced that you've gotten as much knowledge as possible before going in. All the best. 4 Likes |
