Akwa Ibom State Elders Caucus has called on the federal government to have a rethink on its plan to establish a nuclear power plant at Itu local government area of the state. Briefing journalists yesterday in Uyo, Senator Anietie Okon, on behalf of the group, described the proposal as a monumental disaster-in-waiting for the people of the state. Okon explained that the federal government’s plan did not conform to international standards guiding the implementation of civil nuclear programmes across the globe which impose collective safeguards and serve as a check on the quality, health and environmental safety of the proposed projects. The project, he said, would put several communities in the state and the lives of millions of people at risk more so in a country like Nigeria, with a poor track record in the management of power infrastructure. “We have every reason to be disturbed,” he said. According to him, the process is shrouded in secrecy and appears bent on bypassing procurement rules as details of an agreement entered with the Russian company, Rosatom, since 2012, has since not been made public. http://leadership.ng/news/444685/elders-reject-fgs-plan-to-build-nuclear-power-plant-in-aibom |

Nuclear power plants havr to located to a constant source of water to cool the reactor. I feel their fears concerning maintenance and all. But we really need nuclear plants for increased electricity generation. |

INTROVERT:this isn't a function of engine cooling but the professionalism and efficiency of the operators. Chernobyl disaster wasn't as a result of water cooling. |

Fabrolistic:Trying make jest of the President referring to present Germany that was called West Germany before 1991. What can now be said of this poster that has forgotten that Akwa Ibom has been carved out of Eastern region since 1967? Whose degree of Alzheimer is now greater between the poster and Mr President? |

A good one by the elders. Other non Akwa ibom communities are equally disturbed about the proposed nuclear facility. Arochukwu in Abia state is a stone throw from Itu. And from what i gathered they're highly apprensive of the situation. The fact is that Eastern region is densely populated and land is scarce. Northern Nigeria with it's vast uninhabited land area is well suited for the purpose. Why not there? |

Tolexander: Chernobyl was decades ago 86 or 87 and the international atomic agency has set very strict guidlines before any nuclear plant is set up since then. |

INTROVERT:the question is do we have experts that can handle it and adhere strictly to the guild lines? |
Re: Elders Reject FG’s Plan To Build Nuclear Power Plant In A/ibom by INTROVERT(f): 10:49am On Jul 04, 2015 |
Tolexander: Off course we have 2 or more Nigerian bodies set up for atomic work. Energy comision of Nigeria Nigeria Atomic regulatory agency. Dg- Osaisai Nigeria Atomic something something The only dangers of nuclear plants is where to store the degraded radioactive material after consumption and Nigeria has a lot of land where it can be safely stored. |

Nigeria through her history hasn't got maintenance culture, and should'nt start the learning curve with an issue such as a nuclear facility. |
Re: Elders Reject FG’s Plan To Build Nuclear Power Plant In A/ibom by Maser: 10:53am On Jul 04, 2015 |
We don't need that in Nigeria especially with our carelessness. Even Japan that is a highly organised country battled with their own for years before bringing it under control after the tsunami. Now think about a country like ours where people are reckless and would embezzle money meant for maintenance. If that plant misbehaves, it would be mass killing. |

INTROVERT:Bros all this one na big grammar. I don't think we are ready for such a project. No one wants to be used as guinea pig |

INTROVERT:what experience and achievement have the body made to bank on them? Moreover, does the agency have the sophisticated materials and equipments for swift response to any nuclear disaster? Or you wanna tell me that present Nigeria is well sophisticated than the 1986 USSR? NEMA's activities are a typical living example to the response to a concerned issue by Nigerian body. |
Re: Elders Reject FG’s Plan To Build Nuclear Power Plant In A/ibom by neocortex: 11:22am On Jul 04, 2015 |
INTROVERT: Well Japan wasn't decade ago. It has been proven times without number that nuclear plant is not safe. In fact Germany has decommissioned some of its plants because of safety concerns. |
