I was watching 44 minutes recently and then i got an inspiration to compile this list....in the process i came across some mean guys and some brilliant ones too to the extent that the 'hollywood shootout' couldn't even make my list again. because what i realized was that the greatest robberies were not the ones filled with violence like the Lekki/Ikorodu type but the types were little amount of violence but with a great plot/plan is carried out to cart away great sums of money. credits: http://list25.com/25-biggest-robberies-raids-and-heists-ever/ http://www.toptenz.net/the-top-ten-bank-robberies-of-the-21st-century.php http://www.2spare.com/item_60496.aspx http://backgroundchecks.org/15-most-outrageous-bank-robberies-of-all-time.html ok lets go!

1. Central Bank of Iraq robbery by Saddam Hussein (2003) amount stolen: US$1 billion The most shocking bank robbery of the 21st century based on the amount stolen and the complete brainless effort that it takes for a dictator to drain his own country’s bank accounts. On the day before the bombing of Iraq by coalition forces on March 19, 2003, Saddam Hussein sent his son, Qusay, to make a withdrawal from the Central Bank of Iraq with the help of a note, thinking that he owns the bank. The process was simple, and bank personnel consented to the request because of fear. The 5-hour withdrawal period summed over $100 bills that amounted to over $1 billion. Approximately $650 million was later found hidden in walls in Saddam Hussein's palace by US troops. . It is believed that this was the bulk of the stolen money. The remaining money is currently unaccounted for. |

2. Banco Central Burglary (2005) amount stolen: $70 million This one actually lands in the Guinness book of records for the greatest robbery of a bank. http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/greatest-robbery-of-a-bank In 2006, a group of criminals numbering in the dozens banded together for the creative Brazilian bank robbery. The gang of burglars had rented an empty property in the centre of the city and put up a sign indicating it was a landscaping company selling both natural and artificial grass as well as plants, before digging a tunnel underground to their intended target- the base of the bank. The 250 foot tunnel was expertly constructed and had sophisticated lighting and even an air conditioning system. After three months of digging, the thieves finally broke into the vault and made off with what was equivalent to $70 million dollars. 1 Like 2 Shares |

3. The Graff Diamond Robbery The Graff Diamonds robbery took place on 6 August 2009 when two men posing as customers entered the premises of Graff Diamonds in New Bond Street, London and stole jewellery worth nearly £40 million (US$65 million). The robbers used the services of a professional make-up artist to alter their hair by using wigs, their skin tones and their features using latex prosthetics. The artist took four hours to apply the disguises, having been told that it was for a music video. Although the robbers were all eventually caught, as of yet none of the stolen jewels have been recovered. |

4. The Northern Bank Robbery (2004) amount stolen: US$50 million In December of 2004, the robbery was carried out by a large, proficient group of thieves making it one of the biggest bank robberies in British history. On the night before the heist, two different groups of armed men disguised as police visited the homes of two officials of the Northern Bank. Once at the homes, they held the families hostage at gunpoint. The following day when officials were sent to work, some remained with the families being held hostage while others waited until the bank closed and the bank officials gave admittance to other members of the gangs. After the cash was stolen, it was transferred from three different vehicles and family members were shortly released before midnight. With only one person being convicted of money laundering. The investigation is still ongoing and the case remains unsolved. |

5. Brink’s-MAT Robbery (1983) The Brink’s-MAT robbery occurred on 26 November 1983 when six robbers broke into the Brink’s-MAT warehouse at Heathrow Airport, London. At the time, it was described as “the crime of the century”. The gang gained entry to the warehouse from security guard Anthony Black. The robbers thought they were going to steal £3 million in cash. However, when they arrived, they found three tonnes of gold bullion and stole £26 million worth of gold, diamonds and cash. Once inside, they poured petrol over staff and threatened them with a lit match if they did not reveal the combination numbers of the vault. Most of the three tonnes of stolen gold has never been recovered and four of the robbers were never convicted. According to the BBC, some have claimed that anyone wearing gold jewelery bought in the UK after 1983 is probably wearing Brink’s-MAT. |

6. The Great train Robbery (1963) amount stolen: US $74 million The Great Train Robbery was the name given to a £2.3 million train robbery committed on 8 August 1963 at Bridego Railway Bridge, Ledburn near Mentmore in Buckinghamshire, England. The Royal Mail's Glasgow to London travelling post office (TPO) train was stopped by tampered signals. A 15-member gang, led by Bruce Reynolds and including Ronnie Biggs, Charlie Wilson, Jimmy Hussey, John Wheater, Brian Field, Jimmy White, Tommy Wisbey, Gordon Goody and Buster Edwards, stole £2.3 million in used £1, £5 and £10 notes — the equivalent of £40 million (US $74 million) in 2006. Although no guns were used in the robbery, the train driver, Jack Mills, was hit on the head with an iron bar, causing a black eye and facial bruising. The assailant was one of three members of the gang never to be arrested or identified. Frank Williams (at the time a Detective Inspector) claims to have traced the man, but he could not be charged because of lack of evidence. Mills recovered fully from the attack and died in 1970 from leukemia. |

7. SMBC London Robbery (2007) Amount stolen: $300 Million network of offshore accounts had been prepared, passwords and matching account details secretly intercepted. Using the stolen information, a team of foreign hackers smuggled into the bank dispatched payment orders to every corner of the globe. Had the international gang succeeded in siphoning £229m out of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), they would have pulled off the largest robbery in British criminal history. The elaborate operation almost outwitted security systems on the Swift (Society For Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) payments mechanism. But unfortunately for the gang, some of the electronic forms had been filled in incorrectly. |

8. Harry Winston Heist (2008) amount stolen: $108 Million One of the most downright brazen robberies in recent memory was the Harry Winston Heist. It went down in 2008 when a group of four men stormed into one of Paris’s most exclusive jewelry stores and made off with $108 million in diamonds. The men were disguised as women and armed with a .357 Magnum and a hand grenade. They quickly herded the employees and customers into a corner and started breaking open display cases. After filling a suitcase with precious stones, they made their escape. No one from this robbery has ever been arrested with police suspecting that the robbers– whom they’ve nicknamed “The Pink Panthers”– are a part of a larger criminal organization of Yugoslavians that may have been responsible for a number of other high profile jewelry heists. In the meantime, a $1 million dollar reward is still up for grabs for any information leading to the arrest of the robbers.

9. Knightsbridge Security Deposit (1987) amount stolen: £60 million Known to be a famous criminal in Italy, Valerio Viccei moved from his homeland to the UK in order to continue his devious activities along with one of his accomplices. Their target, Knightsbridge Safe Deposit Centre was known to have famous and popular clients and patrons. He planned on being a customer there so that he could rent a safe deposit box in order to gain access. On July 27, 1987 Valerio and his companions subdued the manager and employees, the bank was closed, and Viccei called for backup to ransack as much cash as he could, amounting to £60 million. He could have gotten away clean to Latin America if he did not return to get his beloved Ferrari. |

apologies..but just as suarez was on my aggressive list, this has to make it here too. 10. The Collar Bomb Bank Robbery This one may sound familiar to anyone who’s seen 30 Minutes or Less(movie), but the real story is far more tragic. In 2003, a middle-aged pizza deliveryman walked into a bank, handed the teller a note asking for the money in the vault — and then lifted his shirt to display a collar bomb around his neck and chest. After stealing the money, he got about 15 minutes away before state troopers arrested him. He started screaming that he had been forced to perform the robbery and the bomb was going to go off. The police surrounded the area and waited for the disposal squad to arrive — but before they could get there, the bomb started beeping and blew up. The tale only gets stranger from there, with FBI investigators, a long paper trail of clues, and dead bodies hidden in freezers |

Almost all happened in UK. I remember one of my friends in London telling me that robbers came to their house and made away with the belongings, just the way it happens in Nigeria. I wonder if the UK is still as developed as they said it is. 2 Likes |
