2kris: I learnt apiculture in school. It's not quite hard to train bees. I might equally work out something with bees. |

Neduzze5: Nice, Nice, Nice... You just gave me inspiration to start this up. Do you think the north is a suitable place to start? What are the hiccups I might encounter. |
Re: Beginning A Small Scale Snail Farm by Neduzze5(m): 3:37pm On Jul 07, 2015 |
silverluci: Thank you and welcome. I've not been to the north before and as I hear, the north could be generally hot. Snails like moist environment and if you'd be starting in the north, then you need to sprinkle them water daily. As for feed, the north produces watermelon and cucumber if I am right. Snail love those two very well. 3 Likes |

@OP, you have so inspired me with your positive attitude that am starting my snail farm next week. But I need you to answer these few questions 1) I want to start with car tyre, how will I position them? 2) Where I plan to locate the farm there's no shed, how will I create a shed a for them? 3) You talked about washing the snails, pls explain more. Answers from other experienced farmers are welcome. |
Re: Beginning A Small Scale Snail Farm by Neduzze5(m): 4:08pm On Jul 07, 2015 |
topnedu: You can place one tyre on too of another to make it two tyres or you can even use three. Place it in such a way that snails cannot find a leeway for escape. Then you use mosquito net to cover it, place plantain or cocoyam leaves on the or tarpaulin. The plantain and cocoyam leaves or tarpaulin is to prevent too much rain from entering into the pen. After that, place blocks on the tire to prevent the snails from pushing their way out. Lemme attach some pictures 2 Likes 2 Shares

chidifyn: Ants and coacroches are one major challenge i hv encounterd in my experience in heliculture (Snail Farming business). My advise, ensure you construct ur snail pen (house) with zero access for snail enemies (ants, pests, rats, lizards snakes) etc. Also do not introduce feed on the floor of the pen, use tray pan, and pls dispose feed reminants in the morning to avoide attracting ants. Hope this helps? I will see you @the top! #Wealthinfos 6 Likes |

Re: Beginning A Small Scale Snail Farm by 2kris(m): 9:15am On Jul 08, 2015 |
Neduzze5:let me give u some clue on harvesting ur honey,pollen,wax,prepolis,etc.1..use smooke e.g cow dung, corn comb smooke to supress their aggresiveness, 2......donot use black cloth when going to harvest,3...approach hives from behind..4.....do not spray perfume or any cream, vasline that have heavy scent,..5...do not panic not even shouting when a bee mistakingly enter ur kit.6...make sure the environment is clean to prevent moth, ants,to prevent loose of revenue 7....make sure visitors stay behind to even close to the hive because if more than seven bees sting any human it may lead to heart failure..8 ...when harvesting go not harvest every thing make sure u leave 1inch of honey for the bees to start over again if not the bees will abscond well good luck with ur hives 6 Likes 2 Shares |

Re: Beginning A Small Scale Snail Farm by wealthinfos(m): 12:49pm On Jul 08, 2015 |
topnedu: Starting a snailry with car tyres may be considerd, maybe to test the art. But if you will do heliculture (Scientific Snail Farming) for comercial gains, then the best form of snail domestication is the Pen housing methoded, because the Pen system creates an housing athmospher where the snails feel comfortable as though they are in thier natural home in the forest. Also, its advisable to have a covering like a zink roof, tatch roof or native mat roof over the top of the pen to avoide over heating when there is sun or too much rain fall. Hope this helps?
