If we are going for an out and out striker of course Lewandowski is a better choice. But it appears Van Gaal is going for versatile players rather than specialists. He said this was one of the reasons he moved early for Depay, and Damian is another player known for his ability to play 3 or 4 positions. If u add Schweinsteiger who can play multiple positions also you will agree that Muller would be the preferred albeit more expensive target for Van Gaal

we need genuine pace upfront - muller is slow but the dude knows how to manipulate time & space. i don't think we can get muller.....he's too bayern to leave.

PSG & bayern are already fighting for di maria. he might leave, if he doesn't then he would slug it out with mata.

as for smalling, you are correct. darmian will lock that rightback position down. the number of utility players in the squad is ridiculous. only de gea & shaw are nailed down in one position. others can function in at least 2-3 positions.
