Hi everybody! I have a lot of questions to answer today! But many of them are non-immigrant visa questions (students, tourists...) and not immigrant visa questions. I'll direct those questions to the non-immigrant visa thread at https://www.nairaland.com/1792662/u.s-non-immigrant-visas-listening . Also, I see a lot of private message notifications. Please, don't PM me. I won't even read those messages. Please ask your questions here, or direct them to LagosIV@state.gov. Thanks! |

Sunshine721: NVC hasn't sent us all their August cases yet -- but, that said, I doubt they will send us very many more at this point. We still have openings in September, but it depends how many cases are in NVC's queue... 1 Like |

ramond007: Nigeria is no longer eligible for the Diversity Visa program. The purpose of the DV program is to diversify the immigrant population in the United States, by giving applicants, from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States in the previous five years, a chance to immigrate. So people who are born in any country that has sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years are not eligible to receive Diversity Visas. That number -- 50,000 -- was chosen in 1999, and the people who chose it were not thinking of any specific country when they chose it. So, as of this year, Nigeria is no longer eligible, because in the past five years more than 50,000 Nigerians immigrated to the United States (more than 10,000 each year). I've read rumors that Nigeria was "banned" for some reason, but those rumors are not true. It was a purely numerical decision. I doubt that Nigeria will fall below the 10,000 per year threshold any time soon, as our workload is growing every month. But, if for some reason the number of immigrants does fall dramatically, at that point Nigeria could become eligible for the DV program again. 1 Like |

GeneralShepherd: Aside from the Diversity Visa program (for which Nigeria is no longer eligible), there are some forms of employment-based visas for skilled workers, advanced degree holders, priority workers, and persons with exceptional ability. Please see http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/immigrate/employment.html . |

papaking1: Yes! Please e-mail us at LagosIV@state.gov and ask for an update. We'll need your name and case number. and what happens to the application when i inform them i am now married with children since my dad filed for me as single. If your father is a U.S. citizen, your spouse and children can be included as derivatives. Your visa category will change to F3, though, which has a longer waiting period than F1s. If you father is a Legal Permanent Resident, unfortunately there is no category for married children of Legal Permanent Residents, so your case will be closed. I have to add that sometimes applicants attempt to hide their marital status from us, which is a very bad idea because we do check, and if someone lies about that, they incur a permanent ineligibility for material misrepresentation. So it is always in your best interest to be open and honest about these things. 1 Like |

soleexx: It sounds like you are an intending immigrant, so you are not eligible for a B1/B2 visa. Your father can file the I-130 petition on your behalf, so that you can immigrate legally. Please see http://www.uscis.gov/i-130 . |

Lanrelorry: Your visa category has changed from F1 to F3. The case will remain open until it is current as an F3. Right now F3 cases filed on or before March 15, 2004, are eligible to be scheduled for interviews. You can monitor your priority date at http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/law-and-policy/bulletin.html . |

winnie123: Because there are hundreds of thousands of petitions filed every year. As soon as your petition is approved and it is documentarily complete, you will be scheduled for the next available interview. 1 Like |

Re: U.S. Immigration Questions: Ask A U.S. Consular Officer by VisaOfficer: 6:30am On Jul 11, 2015 |
missolaly2: My guess is that even though you were selected, your rank number was so high that you were never called to an interview. 50,000 Diversity Visas can be issued every year, but many many more than 50,000 entries are selected, because several applicants will not qualify for various reasons. But when we reach 50,000 visas, or when the Sept. 30 deadline rolls around, we have to stop for that year. That means that not everyone whose entry is selected actually gets called for an interview. |

ochiq: The name variation you describe won't be a problem. If you receive a visa, the name on the visa will match the name in your passport. The I-129F petition is valid for four months, but officers have the authority to extend them if the person can't quite get an interview before the expiration date. You should expect to be asked about your fiancee and about the development of your relationship. |
Re: U.S. Immigration Questions: Ask A U.S. Consular Officer by VisaOfficer: 6:34am On Jul 11, 2015 |
FrankNetter: The cases will be returned to USCIS for their review, and they will contact the petitioner and give him the opportunity to respond. If his response convinces USCIS that visas should be issued, they will reaffirm the petitions and return them to us. Otherwise, the cases will be closed, and new petitions will need to be filed on your behalf. 1 Like |
