According to wikipedia Tolstoy's peace and war is epic and regarded as one of the most important works of world literature. I also heard its one of the longest written novels.
How long did it take you to read it??

I read it as a youth.
It's honestly not even that long sef.
My Dad's copy comprised of 3 volumes, each roughly around the same size as a bible.
The Harry Potter Volumes for instance, are much larger in scope and size, especially the arc from the Goblet of Fire to Deathly Hallows.
Another lengthy contemporary Novel/Saga I can think of is Stephen King's 'the Stand'.

Honestly, those volumous novels are very interesting to read. you just get lost in them & dont want dem to end e.g LONDON the novel. its biger than ur bigest Oxford dictionary but very interesting. u seem like a vast reader to me?

I've read a few books,yes.
These days not so much, as I'm often very busy.

The first book that really impacted me was Purple Hibiscus by Chimanda Adichie. I admired the character of Amaka. She was culturally-bound, she knew the importance and appreciated her inherited cultures and traditions to a point of refusing to take on a Christian name in order to get baptized, therefore, she ended up not being baptized along with others. She questions everything western much to the detriment of her mum. That was a character!

The next novel was Half of the Yellow Sun by the same author. That book left me moody for days.

Then A man from Mars. Uhm, I'm that bad at cramming author's names, I just go straight to the business.

The Mine boy by Abraham Peters or Peter Abrahams.

The other is Harry Potter, Animal farm, etc.

Sincerely it's tough to select a particular book, because many have impacted on me in my spirituality, relationships, etc, but right now I'll go for: GOALS by Brian Tracy.

Why? Since I completed that book, I've been conscious about setting both short and long term goals on courses to take, books to read within set times and I've been successful in accomplishing some and I'm looking forward to accomplishing more.

Animal Farm is a really interesting one...I initially read the book as child, and with a child's understanding. I even watched the cartoon back in the day on Channel's TV. It was only when I got to SS2 and re-read the book, that I began to understand the allegory for the origins of communism...with Napoleon and Snowball representing the Lenin-Trotsky relationship.

It was like my eyes just opened for the first time, and I read and re-read the book over and over...Farmer Jones represented Tsarist Russia. The constantly changing rules represented Lenin's sociopathic approach to leadership, and the scene at the end where you couldn't tell the pigs from the humans, in my opinion might represent Khrushev's attempt to steer the USSR away from Lenin's legacy.

Boxer the horse in particular, to me represents the stupidity of the utterly indoctrinated, unquestioning pleb...and can be seen to iconize the congregation at some churches,some boko haram members, and some of the Tanoids we see in the politics section of this forum today.

Whenever i heard the mention of Animal farm, the first quote that comes to mind is "all animals are equal but some animals are more equal". When i first read the book as a teen, i enjoyed it just for the imagery and fell in luv with it. Now, i have to go back and re-read it in other to get the clear massage George Orwell was trying to pass. tnks

Wow. This is eye opening. I read the book in my SS too. I knew there was more to the book but I just couldn't connect it. The last part confused me the most as I couldn't understand what the author meant by the changing faces and the screaming. Thanks for sharing, I'll do a little research on it.

You need to read A Man From Mars too. With an open mind like yours I know you'll easily get the drift.

Interesting...I once tried to read 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' but just couldn't get into it, due to the Author's insistence on writing in what looked like Irish-English.

Same thing happened when I tried to read Irvine Welsh's 'Trainspotting' which is written entirely in Scottish-English...then again, I found it difficult watching the film as well

1. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (OMA4U mentioned it earlier) its a classic with great lessons for anyone aspiring to become a leader
2. Tribes by Seth Godins. I will highly recommend you get this book. u can get it in pdf format.
3. 7 habbits of highly efficient people by Steven Covey. the title speaks for itself
4. how to win friends & influnce people by best selling author Dale Carnegie. to become a good leader you'll need good interparsonal & communication skills which is the main focus of this book.

It's a collection of 15 short stories with each story ending in epiphany. The characters are well portrayed with indelible emotions that stay with the reader. In short, it's a very great book that has its setting in Dublin. Try it!

Art of War is great old book written about 600BC. For leadership books John Maxwell's 360 degrees leader is fine.

Lool, you started with that book? It took me weeks to complete the book (though it was of not much volume) because I couldn't flow in the beginning and I had so many other unread books. But it's a good book on management. Might go back to it someday.

For books on Leadership, I can't recall names now but I can recall some authors: John C. Maxwell, Stephen R. Covey, Jack Welch, Dale Carnegie. There are many others but if you read leadership books written by those men alone you won't remain the same.
