pickabeau1: Vlad Dragomir isn't going with the team to Singapore. As per depth, I don't think players like Zelalem, Crowley, Chris Willock and Iwobi are ready for first team yet. Zelalem and Iwobi may go on loan if they can get a club to give them regular football. Crowley IMO is ahead of the rest of them but even then, he still needs at least one more year in the Youth Squad. Akpom is ready to play a little part in the first team but sadly, the Arsenal of today is not the Arsenal of say 5+ years ago when we used to give youth players opportunities. If Afobe couldn't make it, Akpom will need to do much more than he did at Forest last season to get a foot in. |

Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: Finally Reborn! The Red & White Army: FA CUP Champions 2020 by proudly9ja(m): 12:49pm On Jul 10, 2015 |
pickabeau1:I responded to your earlier post as per specific players regarded as "depth" in the squad. Those players do not count as depth as many if not all of them won't even go near first team this season. As for your latest question on whether we have depth or not, I believe the last 3 to 5 pages on this thread has shown that most Arsenal fans (myself included ) still believe we need one or two additions in certain areas. My thoughts: GK: Covered Defence : Covered (Many won't agree but my opinion ) Midfield : Covered Attack: Need at least one WC striker |

For those hoping AW will bring in a DM, I doubt this will happen now. I believe he's willing to gamble Chambers as his DM/CB backup. Anyways, 5 more days to seeing Arsenal again! The break has been too long. We are likely to see the young 'uns on Wednesday and the big boys including our new GK on Saturday. |

Akpom has got the confidence and skill to take on defenders, he only needs to improve on his positional awareness and calmness in front of goal. I think he will be a better striker than Walcott. I strongly doubt whether AW will spend on a DM after giving Arteta an extension. He also has Flamini, Wilshere, Ramsey and Chambers who can all be back ups for Coquelin. The team surely needs a good striker that is better than Giroud, who can assure us of at least 25goals per season. Problem is there are few out there; truth is they are not available, no not one. |

Ramsey and Wilshere as DM back-up? I hope not |
Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: Finally Reborn! The Red & White Army: FA CUP Champions 2020 by Spy360(m): 5:11pm On Jul 10, 2015 |
naijababe:Wilshere plays DM for England. Ramsey had the backup role for us last season at Arteta's absence. They aren't specialist but can do a decent job if committed. Both though prefer attacking roles. |

I'm sure AW will want to give Chambers an opportunity to prove himself. Spy360: Reports have it that AW has contacted Benzema a number of times over the past few weeks but Benzema wants to stay at least one more season at Madrid. Dunno how true the story is. I still have a strong feeling we will get one striker in before deadline day. We are really short upfront. |
Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: Finally Reborn! The Red & White Army: FA CUP Champions 2020 by Specialist900(m): 8:18pm On Jul 10, 2015 |
proudly9ja:the worst game IMO that Chambers played for us last season was against Southampton, there he played DM. He was woeful. You guys shouldn't associate that DM position to him again. Abeg |
Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: Finally Reborn! The Red & White Army: FA CUP Champions 2020 by proudlysports: 9:56pm On Jul 10, 2015 |
^^^ AW said that's his long term position. Knowing Wenger, he'll want to give him a chance in that position before considering another solution |
Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: Finally Reborn! The Red & White Army: FA CUP Champions 2020 by Spy360(m): 12:27am On Jul 11, 2015 |
proudlysports:Surely Chambers is an option but I feel he is down the pecking order. Apart from Benzema and Higuain (that's not mentioning the big ogas) I do not see any striker that meets our demand. Worse is even those two are not available unless you want to spend mad. Besides they are not that better than Giroud. I remember that game against Everton with Sanchez playing 9, I pity the guy as he was just running around without ball for 45mins. Wenger noticed it and pulled him out at half time for Giroud who came in and scored the equaliser. Since then Sanchez had been deployed to the wings where he clearly excelled. Giroud is that good but gets little credit because of his style. The screamers against Man Utd and Liverpool, and that beautiful side kick at the FA cup final show his class. If he can add a little consistency this season he can do the business for us. AW should give him competition from Walcott. |

Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: Finally Reborn! The Red & White Army: FA CUP Champions 2020 by proudlysports: 12:40pm On Jul 11, 2015 |
Spy360: You're right. With Arteta and Flamini still around, Chambers will probably be no3 DM and no3 RB. Spy360: Oh, sure Giroud is very good. He has improved since he joined us. I do however feel that we need a striker with similar style as Giroud. Wenger has shown that he's not yet confident with Welbz playing that position (I am not certain too). His injury issues are also there to worry about (he is still injured from last season as we speak). The jury is still out on Theo playing that position on his own. He'll have the same problems Sanchez had when he was played as the sole striker. One needs to be able to hold the ball with their backs to goal to play that role well. We all know Walcott plays better facing goal and chasing the ball. Perhaps he will grow into the role but he isn't there yet. Then when we compare with our rivals, last season Chelsea had Costa, Remi and Drogba. Yeah they were also lucky that Costa was fit most of the time but at least they had Drogba and Remi as back up. City have Aguero, Dzeko, Jovetic, Some stats Of the 7 games we lost last season in the EPL, we failed to score in 3 of those games and scored only 1 goal in 3. It was only in the game against Stoke that we scored 2 goals and lost 2 - 3. Also, in those 7 games, Giroud was substituted out by the 65th minute +- 4mins (or didn't play at all) in 5. In the 1 - 2 loss to United, Giroud didn't start. We played Welbz in that position. Giroud came in in the 76th minute and scored our only goal in the 90th. It was only against Spurs that Giroud played 90minutes and we lost. My point is, whilst Giroud has done well and as a team we did well last season in terms on number of goals scored, from above, we'll see why it is important to have a striker that will give us similar/better output than Giroud. I am of the opinion that there are zero points that we could have turned to one point or more and 1 pt that we could have turned to 3 points if this was the case. Ofcourse, we also need to improve defensively. But unlike in previous seasons, this is more of improving on our discipline rather than available man power especially now with the addition of Petr Cech. The emergence of Francis Coquelin has also helped. According to Opta, Arsenal conceded 0.7 PL goals per game with Francis Coquelin starting compared to 1.2 without him this season. Apologies for the long epistle. It's a Saturday so I'm sure you will understand. 1 Like |

@Proudlysports, I really like your analysis, it shows good knowledge of the game. I will like you to react on the availability of strikers that meet your spec taking note of their prices and willingness to leave their present clubs. |

@proudlysports I believe we need a striker with a different skill set, a poacher with top notch positioning, composure, and finishing. |

tayoccu:What about someone who can hold up play like Giroud and can still make those runs like Walcott? Lewandosky, Higuain, Suarez? But they are not available. Wenger has to make one for himself. Welbeck has the potentials but that's just it- potentials. |

Big shout out to the humanitarian and magnanimous Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, he sponsored 11 Brazilian kids through life saving operation recently and don't forget he did something similar last year after winning the World Cup by donating his World Cup bonus to sponsor about 23 poor Brazilian kids to have very expensive procedures.. |
