A group known as Izu- Umunna Cultural As­
sociation has berated President
Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of
the All Progressives Congress (APC) for
handling the issue of emergence of Senator
Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate Presi­
dent in bad faith.














The Igbo socio-cultural group urged the APC
leadership to accept the election of Senator
Ekweremadu as an act of God and allow the
legislature to focus attention on the
business of lawmaking.














At the end of its emergency meeting in Jos
at the weekend, the group also called on the
Federal Government to “as a matter of
urgency relocate the Boko Haram detainees
from Ekwulobia prison”, saying that their
presence would radicalize the youths in the
South-east and create tension among the
people. In a statement signed by the
association’s president, Dr. Ugo Ihekuna and
Secretary General, Chief Elvis Chukwu, the
group passed its vote of confidence on the
Deputy Senate President for his leadership
qualities, insisting that the right of the
senators to choose their leaders must be
respected in accordance with democratic
norms.

























“Having been elected through the most
transparent and democratic process, the will
of the senators must be respected. Senator
Ike Ekweremadu is a trusted national leader
who has in several ways provided leader­
ship strength and acumen in the
administration and legislative matters both
in the National Assembly and the Pan African
Parliament,” it said.
















“We call on the leadership of APC to
unconditionally accept the will and decision
of all the Nigerian senators. The Igbo nation
will hold President Buhari and the APC
leadership responsible should anything
happen to Ekweremadu as his election
followed due process and manifested the
collective will of his colleagues,” the state­
ment added.
















On the relocation of the Boko Haram
detainees to the South East, the group said
that it felt the pains of the Ekwulobia
community and called on the Federal Govern­
ment to relocate them elsewhere as
Ekwulobia prison is not a maximum security
facility.
















“We have examples in Kogi and Benue States
where Boko Haram ran over prison facilities
to release their members. Secondly, the mere
sight of these detainees among a people
that see them as those who killed their rela­
tions in the North is enough to create
tension and panic,” the group warned.
