Why is it that one does not hear about ABG (arterial blood gas) analysis in Nigeria especially for acute respiratory failure patients or COPD? Also I have not heard anyone mention pulmonary function testing. How do they diagnose obstructive or restrictive pulmonary disorders when they don't have these data? I am just curious because it seems that everyone is more interested in hematology and microbiology.

I am a biochemist and I work in a teaching hospital. Normally, I should be in Chem. Path. but for your association, I can't work there.
Do I blame you guys? No. Is it fair? No.

Fact is, your people were smart to form a strong body to preserve your kind.

There was a time we use to do a 2 year course that'll make us Associate MLS, that too was cancelled cuz of limited job offering.

Its most unfortunate that bsc holders in biochem & microbiology that succeeded in obtaining the imlt diploma supported the action amlsn took and implemented through mlscn. Truly na man wey know man na him dey kill am.

For those who want to know the genuine way to study MED. LAB. Science in Nigeria, pls understand that no teaching hospital runs it any longer. You only study it in Nigerian Universities. You cant do MSc in Med Lab with your basic science/ medical science degree. Direct entry is the way to go if you really want to be a med. lab. scientist and own a medical laboratory. You can float a lab as a businessman but it must be managed by a licensed med. lab. scientist. cheers!

nice thread _{(why diddnt i think of it)}. i used to be a lab scientist during my IT days. it was really interesting and very challenging and i have to say, medical lab scientist are the most underated and uncelebrated in the medical field. we do all the dirty work and the doctors get all the praise and recognition. not fair

Pls drop such ideology! You need not to work in a hospital lab to be a successful microbiologist. Think something else. Pls leave the Medical lab for the Medical lab scientist. Cheers!!

It's sad that biochemists and microbiologist all striving to be lab scientists as singularly minded as the profession is. Also they are only superior to cleaners and take all the shit from other health professionals in the hospital. It's the situation of the country and everyone trying to make ends meet.

Oga its either you are still in an isolated secondary or you have been away in pluto for many decades now.You deserve to render an apology to the health system in general for referring to the Medical laboratory proffession as such. Medical laboratory science is a 5years programme with a mandatory 1year internship and 1year of NYSC, which places it at high esteem like its counterparts in the health system I.e Pharmcy nd Physiotherapy. A Medical laboratory Scientist is a distinct proffessional and the Medical laboratory proffession an enviable proffession! I guess I must have educated you for free. God bless you!!!!!!

And lol at 'counterparts' you and I know there's strata in a hospital and I want to believe you know where mls lies on the totem pole. That is besides the point, my gripe is the biochemistry students swooning/whining over a hospital job that isn't even in abundance for the 'professionals' putting themselves at the mercy of people who take a ton of shiit from other people and looking for whom they can pass some of that to.

The Genesis to your "gripe" is mere ignorance and the antidote is to keep mute instead of your malicious statements in attempts to express your so called "gripe". Medical Lab Science takes no shiit from nobody. Anyone that wants to be MLS should simply go and sit for Jamb. MLS is a proffession and has to be regulated.
