Help!!! Nigeria Customs Service Is Scaring Away Importers From Nigeria by obichiekweibe59: 10:20pm On Jul 14, 2015 |
Hi Nigerians, I hereby bring to your notice a very recent but ugly development presently on going in Apapa ports. A team of young customs officers, known as the CG TEAM has been unleashed on importers in nigeria, just to generate revenue illegally. The group was posted from Abuja. They work in conjunction with other officers already on ground.Their duty is to conduct examination in company of releasing officers{ACs}, generate assesment for the clearing agent to go and pay. What is disturbing in their operation, is their official recklessness and impunity. They have practically rendered all other officers redundant, and inferior. They have almost grounded operations at the ports.Even their co-officers are amazed at their demonic attitude. Yesterday,a friend who was clearing a container at apapa port witnessed how a member of this so called CG Team, {a one star officer}humiliated an AC{Assistant Controller} during examination. The AC who is supposedly a senoir officer, seasoned, experienced, and also the releasing officer informed the boy that the declaration and the quantity tallied, but the young boy insisted on getting everything offloaded 100%.While this was being done all other jobs stood still. Finally it was discovered that there was no excess.Time was wasted, other containers/agents for examination were frustrated. This process has caused congestion and the importers are groaning under extra storage charges. Worse stiil, this team can hastily generate their asessment at any value for the goods, even when the PAAR and HSCODE indicate otherwise. They just dont care.Their decision is law.You must obey. Importation is business driven by the quest for profit. You do not expect any importer to import goods worth 3million naira, declare contents and value correctly, and PAAR issued for him to pay about N500,000.He pays, then a set of naive and unqualified officers wearing political ranks will just generate additional 500,000 and ask him to go and pay.Is this how to generate revenue? Someone need to call this TEAM to other to avert a repeat of what happened at TIN CAN PORT where they clashed with agents. They are killing business in their arrogance and impunity. If they have genuine cause to reappraise duty, they must be professional about it. They have to follow the tarriff, respect the PAAR instead of arbitrary generation of unrealistic asessment. CG DIKKO should urgently recall this team before they further compound the unemployment situation in the country. Alternatively they should receive refresher course to let them learn how to respect their senoirs. Some of them can not even write a flawless report so why should they rubbish experienced senior officers. Its absurd. They are embarrassing the Nigeria Customs Service. Just for your attention. |

If they can ban importation totally, so be it. We import too much and our currency/economy is suffering for it. |

We import too much and our currency/economy is suffering for it. U think any country can survive without importation. Even usa do import from china but they standadised. The excess crude account deposits being shared by governors is not affecting our economy only importation is{by your own assesment}. How smarth an economist you are |
