I'm going to invest all my money on buying lands, bags of beans, bags of local rice etc till the president sees the need for a finance minister. it's the finance minister that determines the direction of the economy especially when a new regime comes on board. the current regime has no known direction and has made a lot noise about how they are going to stop this and that during the election so investors are withdrawing their money instead of pumping money into the economy and the result is the continuous downward movement of the naira. buhari clearly doesn't understand modern macroeconomics, he needs a finance minister with a robust track record and international recognition ASAP.

Not absolutely so. There will still be that gap because there is no such thing as an absolutely import dependent economy. We have several factors and assets of production domiciled here, and anyway inflation is not instantaneous, more like creep.
When you factor the goods that we consume that are imported, the imported raw materials etc you will know appreciate what increase dollar rate does to our economy. What are things we produce locally? In fact name any consumable goods that we produce locally. What about the effect of high cost of raw materials on the little manfacturing firms still alive, what about the attendant production cost?

How much was it when GEJ took over, about 140. So GEJ's administration shares in the blame. That should not stop GMB from doing the right thing because that is why he was voted in and GEJ voted out.
new2020:
I blame Yoruba people for all this...all bent on removing GEJ. On may 30th a dollar was 215 naira. Within a month and half of GMB in office it has fallen in value by a whopping 30 naira; unprecedented in the history of Nigeria. This is outrageous!

Oil price and dollar have had a consistent alternate historical relationship, while dollar rises, oil price falls because there is an indication of less demand on oil. I think the value of our currency has a close relationship with the price of oil, coupled to our lack of infrastructure development and corruption within the past governments, plus there has been consistent buy of dollar by corrupt politicians who now keep their money in private vaults rather than banks to avoid prosecution.
tougher days are ahead. With the lifting of sanctions on IRan, welcome to the era of cheap gas and further plunging of oil prices in international market.

It was called WASC in the 60s. Olodo. All graduates in the 60s were issued WASC Certificate not WASSCE Certificate. Even your Daura President knows this. Check his INEC form, he filled WASC and not WASSCE.

Oga, the rise of the Dollar, Euro, pound etc against the Naira has nothing to do with the rise or fall of oil price. It is pure failure of economic managers and policymakers to. Sadly, we have had no Economic Team since May 29 till date. This is pathetic!
What we need is sound fiscal policy and austerity (for now). Infrastructures need to be fixed and local production encouraged especially the manufacturing sector. When we can achieve all these and less import, we will be able to talk business.

The fact is , all these years, CBN has been wasting foreign reserves "artificially" defending the naira.

The fall of naira at the same time foreign reserve is shooting up is a clear example of CBN futile efforts all the while.
With no export but over 100% import driven economy, naira is bound to free fall if not artificially defended.

Lets learn to embrace policies that are sustainable, not mere artificial defense mechanisms that are bound to fail.

Dollar to Naira was 150 Naira when he assumed office as acting president on Feb. 9 2010. Under GEJ, Naira lost 65 Naira in 5 years however close to 50% ( 30 Naira) was lost barely 2 months under GMB. We are dealing with factual information now!

One thing I have come to understand about Nigeria importers is that they are very heartless and wicked, especially the Igbos, that's why am praying an Igbo man should never rule this country (no offence to Igbos, it just my opinion). Now this is my observation, 90% of imported things in Nigeria (electronics and gadgets, household equipment, building materials, office equipment, most clothing, so many things) are imported from China and if I remember correctly the Chinese govt earlier this year part ways with using Dollars as her primary trading currency, instead they now use Chinese yen so to build purchasing power of the yen, though use of dollars in Chinese trade is still very much welcome. so how does dollars rate to Naira concern importers not petroleum importers mind u, these people milk Nigerians at any giving opportunity, they will tag it dat dollars is now high and whereas most of them don't even use dollars in their trade, what they simply do is travel down there and do a wired transaction. I have a friend whose dad import A.C from China, after he analyze everything to me it turns out importers can still make millions if they even sell an A.C (2 horse power for 30k) and a 32 inches Plasma for 20k but greed won't allow an igbo man do the right thing. God save this country cause the problem is just too much for one president to handle
