huptin:Federalism will not solve the problem. The correct term is Ogou or Egou not Egun. The Ogous are a different ethnic group and whilst they trace their ancestry to Ife like most so called Omo Odua It is not clear they are "Yoruba" in the now widely understood meaning. The Aworis are not the most populous indigenous group in Lagos State.Rather that is the Ijebus who are in Ikorodu and Epe. The Aworis are quite close to Ijaw in some ways .Whether or not they are "Yoruba" is for them to say. They seem to have taken that position but we must remember that about 150 years ago no one called themselves Yoruba . The first census conducted in Lagos by the British did not mention Yorubas rather it mentioned Ekiti,Oyo,Ijebu etc and that is very instructive. I suspect this is similarly the case in other parts of Nigeria where disparate groups have been forced to unite with those with whom they have the greatest affinity so as to survive Nigeria The Awori are a different group entirely. It is important to realise that before Nigeria was created there was no one calling themselves Yoruba though this was generaally understood to mean Oyo people they did not call themselves so |

0monnak0da: I intentionally used Egun, because thats the name many people know us and call us by, we are the Ogus, but your assertion that Ijebus are the most populous is contestable, The Aworis are the main indigenes of Ijanikin, Ojo, Amuwo Odofin, lagos Island, Isheri, Agege, ikeja, Ibeju Lekki, Iba, Ajah and they constitute quite a major proportion of Badagry indigenes also. |

EastLebanon: I heard that they are the original owners of Lagos before the Yorubas came and seized it. I heard they don't consider themselves to be Yoruba. If this is true, Yorubas may not have any claim to Lagos like they have led everyone to believe. |

Re: Aworis Protest Marginalization Buy Yorubas by 0monnak0da: 10:45am On Jul 15, 2015 |
huptin:I think you are mixing two separate things. Indigeneship and population. Sure whether Ijebus are more numerous in Lagos is contestable but that has nothing to do with how many towns the Aworis are indigenes of. You say they are indigenes of Ikeja, really do you have any evidence for that? When you talk of indigenes it is clear you do not understand the history of Lagos. Ijaws have lived in Lagos for centuries fishing as have other fishing groups from as far as Togo. The issue is ,who was in control. Much of what we know as Lagos state today was populated by all kinds of people for centuries long before Aworis came there. The main business was fishing and people came and went. These include Ebira,Nupe,Ogou,Bini,Ijaw etc. The areas that were inhabited continuously were few. Places like Ibeju Lekki and Ajah have always had Ijebus. Lagos Island is full of all kinds of Agboles that are Ijebu,Egba, Tapa,Bini etc. so where you get the idea that the indigenes of Lagos Island are Awori is strange. Whether it is Olowogbowo,Lafiaji,Obalende,Campos,Ita Ifaji, etc you will see mostly Egba or Ijebu . Please name 3 Awori families that you know in Lagos Island Describing people who do not even speak Awori language as Awori is like describing Americans as English. There is a very weak connection 1 Like |
