Recently, the special media has been filled with news of the new
admission policy adopted by JAMB whereby 'Candidates of
universities with surplus applicants for the Unified matriculation
Examinations (POST UTME) Are reassigned to other university
with lower number of candidates than their capacity'.

I know this move would be a shock to a lot of Jambites but I
actually think there are some advantages.

1) It would prevent Over-admission in top schools
We all know the rate at which people apply for the Top 5
universities is very high with only UNILORIN having over 100,000
applicants. Don't you think they would be pressured into
admitting more than their capacity? Well, I think so.

2) It would increase number of admitted students
Okay, let's say UNILORIN could admit 10,000 students out of a
100,000. What happens to the 90,000 left? They would sit at home
for another year while there are other universities which are
admitting below their capacities. If they are redirected here, their
chances of getting admission would be high.

3) Admission would now be based on merit
So when applicants to a university are limited, don't you think
they would try all possible means to pick the best out of the little
applicants unlike when they are so numerous and the university
can pick both merited and unmerited candidates.

4) Jambites would perform better
Given this new policy, next year Jambites would buckle up so
as not be a victim of the admission policy. Nobody would take the
JAMB exam as a child's play again.

5) Academic standards is on the rise
When JAMB reduced cutoff marks to 180, everybody was
roasting them on twitter, Facebook & nairaland. Now the
minimum score to be considered for the affected universities is
'250'. Well me thanks our Academic standards is rising.

Well, I know most people wouldn't be admitted into their
preferred institutions but I really believe JAMB is doing it for the
best. ( Goodluck to all aspirants).

How do you expect the universities to feel? It would just be like leaving them with the 'not too good' students.

seriously, I really do understand you but do you know that lots of these aspirants would not be given admission and most of them end up regretting why they chose the school in the 1st place because of the frustration of sitting at home for one year.

I have seen victims of such...

OP,I tink ur brain is replace with indomie noodles

If there are too much aspirants, does dat stop the institution from admitting above their quota,If students are allowed to do post utme, the number of aspirants will still get reduce because of those that will fail or those dat won't meet the cut-off.

Op

Those candidates have their reasons for choosing public schools in the first place. One of such reasons could be the fact that they cant afford the exorbitant fees charged by private skuls. Transferring them to such school makes no sense at all. I believe more than 80% of Nigerians can't afford those fees!

Unless you are happy that millions of Nigerian youths won't have access to university education either because they are poor or they can't score up to 250 marks in the exam.

Let the status quo remain unchanged. Most private schools do not make it compulsory for candidates to choose them when applying. They rather relax their admission rules. Some of them conduct post utme exams 3 times so that those that missed the earlier ones can still be admitted. Therefore your argument doesn't make sense. Any candidate that doesn't make it to a public skul will still find his way into private schools if he can afford it.

op is reasoning... But can't jamb let students do their thing their way? Jamb shd rather set a limit to d number of student dt can chose a university and dt shd be when they are applying in d first place - so it will be first come first served!

I although like the new development from jamb but I would have preferred the ineligible students are not reassigned to only one school but be given an option of like three schools so they can choose from.
