The National Universities Commission has said online degrees obtained from foreign institutions will not be accepted as means of seeking employment or doing other legitimate business in Nigeria.

The commission also slammed Maryam Abacha American University in Niger Republic, saying it has been inundated with enquiries from some Nigerian applicants, who have been offered admission into the university.

NUC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Ibrahim Yakassai, made the announcement during a press briefing on Thursday evening in Abuja, against the backdrop of some foreign universities, which admitted students from Nigeria.

“We wish to restate that as the only quality assurance agency for universities in Nigeria, the NUC is maintaining its stand that degrees from Maryam Abacha University will not be accepted in Nigeria,” the commission stated.

The NUC, which also discredited all part-time cross boarder education in Nigeria, therefore warned citizens against patronising online universities which offer academic programmes without physical contact with their students.

According to him, the Nigerian constitution has no backing neither does it recognise such degrees obtained online, saying students look for cheap means of acquiring qualifications to avoid competition at home.

He said, “Nigeria will not recognise online degrees. Online degrees are not accepted in Nigeria at the moment. The Nigerian constitution does not even give recognition to such degrees. Those who run out of Nigeria for study outside this country are those looking for cheaper degrees. It is either they cannot pass the examinations or they do not possess the minimum entry qualifications.”

The NUC criticised the entry qualifications being used by Maryam Abacha American University, saying they were poor.

Yakassai said concerned students were offered admissions on part-time basis with a graduation time of four semesters for programmes including Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences and Public Health.

He said, “In Nigeria, the duration for a full time degree programme is not less than three years for direct entry and at least, six years for part-time, while professional programmes in Sciences, Engineering and Health Sciences, including Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science and Public Health are not offered on part-time basis in Nigeria.”

Those online things are just as fake as the mirages on the roads.

Done an online test where I copy and paste the questions in Google and yahoo search boxes to get instant answers.

Kudos to fast network grin but that was before I became born again.

Good move.

It's only in Africa that we hear this kind of news. Are we better that the UK and US? Online education allows people to further their education while working. No big deal..

There are so many people with Online Masters from good schools abroad. The policy of some UK universities is that you must have a two week physical contact time with the school in UK before returning to your home country to continue the online programme. I have issues with this NUC pronouncement.
1. Did they just realize about the online degree stuff now?
2. If they want to ban it, what will happen to those who long obtained theirs before this pronouncement?
3. With effect from what date (day, month and year) will this take effect (as it was not stated on the report)?
4. Would there be any penalty for those who have got good jobs with their online certs? If so, to what extent?

As for the Maryam Abacha University, I think NUC should find out what is obtainable in the country where the university is domiciled. I agree with them that certain professional courses are not supposed to be run on part-time basis.

Rubbbissh....

People discrediting online degrees esp genuine ones don't know what they r saying.... They are very good, very educating and the best for a distant learning.

Whats the point? Why not ban distance learning programs in Nigeria.

They should just focus on making better our education system in Nigeria so that we can at least make 999th position.

The rationale behind this nonsense is the fact that most people would prefer these programs than going to real lectures in Nigerian universities to face wicked, sadist lecturers and a harsh condition.

I have 5 certifications online.... wonderful skills acquired. I have never been this happy with learning. Oyibo sabi!!!!!

Make we move forward o Nigeria!!!!! Haba!

What do you expect from a man many believe is certificateless. Online degrees should be regulated not banned, because our own education system is completely useless. NUC should focus on rebuilding a genuine educational structure for Nigeria rather than ban online degrees. Banning online degrees will not improve or update the outdated learning modules we operate with in our institutions, or create jobs for the teeming unemployable graduates we dole out annually.

When you're done with the online program you get a degree in the name of the University so How will they know if the degree was gotten online?

Instead of regulating the useless ones, why would they just completely ban the whole thing. This is a case of retrogression. NUC trying to seek relevance.
