I hate this so-called NUC. Please who are those in charge?Last year, they disparaged NOUN,and just recently, they announced that all certificates obtained from universities in Benin Republic are not allowed in Nigeria, hmm and there they go again, all online degrees are banned from Nigeria, yet to gain admissions into Nigerian institutions is like trying hard to gain the kingdom of God. Which kind of country be this self. This is fucking frustrating.Omo i tire ooo.

these online degrees offer a means for working adults to upgrade themselves. many people cant afford to stop work just to attend school full time, online degrees give them the necessary flexibility. many married mothers also have the time to take care of their kids and pursue a degree.
in the year 2015, education is going online and offering flexibility, almost every school in every country is looking at the online option to stay relevant. in Nigeria we are banning online degrees. very backward move from NUC. regulate, access and accredit the online schools

When you're done with the online program you get a degree in the name of the University so How will they know if the degree was gotten online?

1. So, for first degree, you will be asked to produce your NYSC discharged/exemption certificate.

NYSC does not mobilize and issue discharge/exemption certificates to graduates of institutions not recognized in Nigeria.

2. For higher degrees, your current employer already knows you were with them all through the period you claim to be studying while your prospective employer would ask you during interview if your program is online or residence. Your CV typically records your employment and educational history with dates anyway.

Those who run out of Nigeria for study outside this country are those looking for cheaper degrees. It is either they cannot pass the examinations or they do not possess the minimum entry qualifications.

Such unprecedented, shocking and primitive ignorance.

While I agree some on-line degrees are not even worth the paper they printed on, other especially the UK based ones are of very high standard. What we need is regulation, not outright ban.

Few days ago we all witness the shameful news that none, not even one, of our Nigerian universities were among the top 1000 universities in the world, and here the NUC man is talking trash.

I did my masters at the LSHTM, and had the opportunity of being lectured by some of the best brains in public health. I didn't have any "physical contact" - whatever that means - but the knowledge I gained cannot be compared to that of any local university (all due respect to them). Moreover the cost was over 10 times that of any local university.

The educational system in this country needs a serious overhaul. I don't know why those people in charge of education in this country are not forward thinking or developmental in their thought so that everyone can be happy.

There are so many things N.U.C needs to look into, like solving the problem with the disparity between H.N.D and BSc certificates or scrapping the Polytechnics outrightly, instead of allowing people waste their time.

Now you can no longer get an online certificate because it has been banned, N.U.C should realize that population is increasing in geometric proportion and we dont have enough universities to cater for everyone and some people need to work while educating themselves at the same time.

What N.U.C should do is regulate these online studies and if there is any adjustment that needs to be made then it should be made especailly for courses that involves practicals and give everyone opportunity to educate him or herself so every one can be happy.

The developed countries live on the princple of making majority of its citizens happy, In as much as N.U.C and the F.G wants to make good decisions for the betterment of this country they should also feel the pulse of its citizens and make things work for good.

LOL!! and you think those employers all went to local universities?? I laff in Otuoke.

The standards of some online programs cannot be compared to even the best full time program in Nigeria. That the truth.

In the NGO world where I work, close to 60% of the management staff have foreign degrees, mostly obtained online. In fact employees are encouraged to develop themselves and even some are offered limited sponsorship once he/she can show evidence of admission.

Rubbbissh....

People discrediting online degrees esp genuine ones don't know what they r saying.... They are very good, very educating and the best for a distant learning.

Whats the point? Why not ban distance learning programs in Nigeria.

They should just focus on making better our education system in Nigeria so that we can at least make 999th position.

The rationale behind this nonsense is the fact that most people would prefer these programs than going to real lectures in Nigerian universities to face wicked, sadist lecturers and a harsh condition.

I have 5 certifications online.... wonderful skills acquired. I have never been this happy with learning. Oyibo sabi!!!!!

Make we move forward o Nigeria!!!!! Haba!
There is a difference between online certifications and a full degree program online. They cannot ban certifications, they banned full degree programs.

why then would NUC then accept open university certificate if online degrees are not allowed?
Learn to read things properly before making comments. You have to be at the Uni physically at some point. Maybe go there to write your exam or some form of accessment. You cannot just stay in Nigeria and after 3 or 4 years you say you have degree from an American Uni for instance. That is their point.

WhatDoYouMean:
There are so many people with Online Masters from good schools abroad. The policy of some UK universities is that you must have a two week physical contact time with the school in UK before returning to your home country to continue the online programme. I have issues with this NUC pronouncement.
1. Did they just realize about the online degree stuff now?
2. If they want to ban it, what will happen to those who long obtained theirs before this pronouncement?
3. With effect from what date (day, month and year) will this take effect (as it was not stated on the report)?
4. Would there be any penalty for those who have got good jobs with their online certs? If so, to what extent?

As for the Maryam Abacha University, I think NUC should find out what is obtainable in the country where the university is domiciled. I agree with them that certain professional courses are not supposed to be run on part-time basis.

Besides is it written on those certificates that they got it online? Stewpid fools

this means you totally condemn the purpose for which the online degrees were established. little did you know that you don't need to be on campus to receive lectures at our open university. justdo registration and that is it. every other communication is done online.

so learn to comprehend things properly before responding.

The certification I have online are business specialisation courses.

They expect me to go and pay 10million to go business schools.

Why not take different courses online that make up the business courses with less than a 100k with verfied certificates.

Please can you give me the website(s) of the school where you took the certificate courses. Is it Coursera? I will appreciate a quick response. Thanks. I need something to further my knowledge.

NUC can ban all they want. All I know is that they will still unban it one day.

Re: NUC Bans Online Degrees, Abacha Varsity Certificates by Holak: 8:41am On Aug 07, 2015
But what do they mean by banning online degrees? First, when schools issue degree certificates, they don't indicate whether it was online or not? Two, when you say ban, what then follows? Are you going to arrest those undertaking online degrees? If you say they won't get jobs, are you an employer of labour? Will you dictate to an employer the qualifications to consider? Federal government don't even employ not to talk of NUC. What NUC can only do is to ban such people from taking up jobs in the University which is their domain. Then when you talk about Constitution, I wonder if Constitution stipulates how knowledge or certificates will be obtained. I hope no one is discouraged by this selfish move. The truth is that the Nigerian educational system is too poor and NUC should think about doing something about it. Even the DG of NUC got his Masters abroad.

And who told you that employers are interested in where or how you got your degrees? Are you attuned to current realities. Employers are interested in the value you can add to their organization and some of these foreign Universities are the ones that could actually improve people's worth.

No its not. But the fact that many Nigerians are willing to acquire it through dubious means is a bad thing. Therefore the action taken against online certificates is a good one.
