LordVarys:
Fresh facts yesterday emerged on how former President Goodluck Jonathan and prominent Ijaw leaders, including state governors from the Niger Delta region prevailed on foremost ex-militant leader, High Chief Government Epemupolo popularly called Tompolo to abort a scheduled meeting of ex-militant generals in Bayelsa State.

According to reports, though several telephone calls were made to Tompolo by the Ondo, Delta and Bayelsa state governors, Olusegun Mimiko, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and Hon. Seriake Dickson respectively, on the need for him (Tompolo) and others to abort the proposed meeting due to the tensed reaction it had generated, the call by Jonathan was reported to have convinced Tompolo to abort the meeting and allow state governors from the region meet with President Muhammudu Buhari on the issues of the hitches experienced in the Federal Government amnesty programme.

Among those mentioned to have called Tompolo between Friday and Saturday were the Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clarke and some newly appointed service chiefs.

Governor Dickson, who was to be an uncomfortable host of the contentious meeting was subsequently, assigned to issue a statement cancelling the meeting.
In the statement issued by Daniel Markson-Iworiso, the chief press secretary to Dickson, he simply cancelled it and announced that the governors and the aggrieved ex-militant leaders would meet soon.

But the media aide to Tompolo, Comrade Paul Bebeminibo, when contacted, simply said the decision to abort the meeting was a call by the collective pressure by all Ijaw leaders.

Meanwhile, the decision by the high military command to deploy armed soldiers to cordon off the Ijaw House venue of the aborted meeting of the ex-militant leaders, under the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state has sparked off protest among Ijaw youths.
The armed soldiers and riot policemen who arrived the Ijaw House building at about 12pm on Friday and left late on Saturday morning, condoned off the venue of the meeting with the workers of the Ministry of Ijaw Affairs and the workers at the Secretariat of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) unable to work.
The Ijaw House, which is considered the administrative Headquarters of the Ijaw youths in the region, was taken over by soldiers and visitors and workers ordered away from the premises.

Reacting to the development yesterday, the spokesman of the IYC, Comrade Eric Omare, condemned the military invasion.
“The invasion is illegal, unconstitutional and a draw back to the dark days of military dictatorship where Nigerians were deprived of their fundamental rights. The IYC wishes to remind the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari that we are in a constitutional democracy where things are done according to law. The 1999 Constitution which is the foundation upon which our democracy is built recognises the right to freedom of assembly and movement,” the IYC noted.

The IYC further pointed out that the Niger-Delta people whether as ex-agitators or youth groups have the right to assembly in a meeting and free movement, adding that President Buhari did not go to war with the Niger Delta people in the March 28, 2015 Presidential election with Niger-Delta born Jonathan but only contested an election in which he came out victorious and that they were therefore at a loss as to why Buhari had decided to treat the Niger Delta region like an enemy zone and a conquered territory.”

“Political, opinion and religious leaders and the international community should prevail on Buhari to have regard for constitutionalism in the Niger Delta region and stop the violation of the rights of Niger Deltans. The IYC would also take immediate legal and related actions to address these violations. Whether President Buhari likes it or not, the Niger Delta people would meet to determine their destiny in Nigeria,” they added.

I think the government should becareful when dealing with the ex militants. They already have a biased view of the current government and sending military personnel to stop a publicized meeting will only make the ex militants feel the govt is out to get them. I believe they should be allowed to hold their meetings but be closely monitored. The issue of hostilities starting up again btw the ex militants and the government will in no doubt weaken our already weakened economy. I don't think Nigeria can afford to tackle both Boko Haram and MEND at the same time! I might be wrong but just my 2 cents!

Tompolo and his gang should stop grandstanding. They do not need a meeting before they decide to shift to the creeks to continue stealing oil and vandalizing pipelines. Tompolo was in charge of FG contracts to secure the pipeline installations in the Niger delta, and surprisingly the rate of vandalization skyrocketed under his watch. He and his cohorts were busy buying private jets and mansions. Unfortunately, with the recent nuclear deal signed with Iran, oil prices will fall even further, because Iran & Saudi Arabia will flood the market with oil. Welcome to $30 a barrel era. This means that the militant in Buguma can bunker from now till the cows come home and have nobody to sell it to.

Goodluck Jonathan had the unique opportunity to turn around the plight of the Niger Deltans, but rather chose to continue to pay off the likes of Tompolo, Asari and co, while the region continued to wallow in perpetual poverty. Instead of completing East-West road and building numerous road and waterway channels all over the Niger delta, they were busy looting the national treasury blind. Whenever they like, they will charter helicopter and fly to Yenogoa, while the rest of us continue to drive through mud and water in the name of road travel.

Buhari as a Fulani man will face north and continue the development that has stalled there since Abacha and co left Asorock. Before our very korokoro eyes, the north will wear the look of small Dubai. If and when next an Ijaw man smells the insides of Asorock again, he should wise up and sow the seeds of prosperity and development in their impoverished region, and not just for a few.

It is about time Nigeria returned to the farm. The richest people in America today are farmers. Food items are the only products that have doubled in price in the last 5 years in the US. That means more money for farmers. If Nigeria does not make Agriculture the mainstay of the economy, we will run out of funds to even produce the oil we think we have in abundance. We will run out of funds to steal and loot, because there will be nothing to loot.

Abacha used Petroleum Trust Fund to fix major roads in most metropolis up North. The southern people cried "marginalization" but Abacha turned deaf ears.

I never knew that anything could take me to Bayelsa until I had to visit the naval command in Yenagoa. From Ahoada getting close to Yenogoa (close to the market around the bridge) was unbelievable. Going from Yenogoa to Benin was a deathtrap.

What exactly did GEJ do for the ND area in his 8 years stint as the President? Otuoke Fed. University. What else? Environmental degradation, massive unemployment, bad or nonexistent infrastructures, etc. continue to plague the region. Instead of the ND regions reaching out to him to table their grievances against the FG, they kept mute because of the little crumbs falling down from Abuja.

Now that the party is over, what is the fate of ND? The outlook is not very promising. They have resorted to crying blue murder in less than 100 days of PMB. You cannot eat your cake and have it. Apparently life in squalor is their destiny. As they made their bed, let them lay on it.

Let the wailing continue...

That is the way to go, difuse tension by negotiation not propaganda, intimidation and violence. I commend all those involved in calming the situation and call on both sides to meet and sort out issues around the table. Both the aggreived and the authorities must be willing to give and take in the spirit of peace and mutual understanding. This is commendable and a marked progress from the dark days pre-Yaradua, another dividend of the empowerment of the minorities by the acsension of the Jonathan government. There is finally someone who can represent them and who understands BOTH sides of the argument. Yes, Jonathan has seen the limitations of the State and is best placed to intervene. That is why it is important to empower all parts of the country particularly the minorities to create a proper sense of belonging in this national project. It can only strengthen the union.

Losers have a way of immortalizing Jonathan.

Jonathan i. Conjunction with SA jailed He eh Okah of mend and you think he can broker any peace grin?

So MEND that gave their official position through Jomo Gbomo supports Jonathan ?

After Jonathan begged them, who deployed soldiers to seal the place.

Lmao at this brainless generation who can not think on their own.

All militants are not happy with Tompolo because he spent the billion baits security contract money alone and there can never be unity amongst them.

Meanwhile in some silly northern elders could not prevail on their sons who have continued to kill innocent Nigerians, destroying properties worth billions. They are happy GEJ and Ijaw leaders prevailed, no wahala they should know that the evil day has only been shifted to a future date, may God not allow it happen.

The Northerners should know that the day the ND decides to take their destiny into their hands, that will be the end of Nigeria and Oil.

GEJ is a true democrat.
