Dear VO,

I need clarity on procedure. I need to go to the US for an urgent medical procedure. My wife has a b1/b2 visa and had a job with a multinational oil coy until February when she lost the job. Her visa has not expired and she will accompany me for the trip.

My wife and I have funds sufficient to take care of the all medical expenses on the trip in my wife's accounts although no substantial deposits since February.

However my own bank statement doesn't show much for monthly income as my business is not doing so well lately.

Will my wife's account statement be sufficient for evidence of access to funds for the trip?

Hello Toluwee,

This is more a question for the Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection... We issue visas that get you to the port of entry. It is up to CBP whether or not you'll be allowed into the United States.

Dear vo,
I had a visa interview scheduled for 5th of August, but I recently received a mail that the interview date has been moved to 25th of August. The problem is, the conference I plan attending is from 19th - 21st August, being that I can't go back to my application. Can I apply for another conference that would hold later in the year? Even if this is done, details of the new conference won't appear on my application. I hope this won't affect my chances? Cos the whole rescheduling has disrupted my plans.

Hello Femite74,

Just be honest about what happened with the Consular Officer during the interview. We know many applicants were forced to reschedule their August appointments.

Hello, I am planning to apply for a J-1 Visa next month to travel early September. From previous comments it seems there is a massive gap between the time of application and available appointment dates. I was wondering if this will also apply for J-1 Visas. Will it be possible to get a mid August appointment if i complete my application by the end of this month?
Appreciate the good work!

Hello JohnSnow008,

We recommend applying as far out as possible for your visa appointment to ensure you do not miss your purpose of travel in the United States. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to schedule an appointment in time. However, you should consider filing an emergency appointment request and justifying your need.

Dear VO, you are doing a great job,
I got a b1b2 visa early 2014, travelled that year for 5weeks at a stretch, then this yr 2015 Feb for 2 weeks and May for 10 days. All these visits i was given 6 months to visit my uncle and never encountered any problem at POE. I am planning to travel again next month for just a week, i have no intention to immigrate to US just to relax with my uncle whenever i am less busy in Nigeria, money for the flight is not a problem. My question is i hope i wont encounter any problem at POE as regards my frequent visit to my uncle and a friend told me that frequent visit will make them think i got a girl in the US but no no just visiting but i am single though. i need ur advise please

Hello victorsin00002,

This is another question for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection!

VO,

I have this request to make on behalf of a friend.

He was sent back last year and his student visa cancelled.

He applied to redress and he was cleared of all wrongdoings.

He applied for US student visa again two weeks ago and was
granted the visa but was told they have to verify the letters
sent from Homeland.

After two weeks, they are yet to get back.

What could be the cause of the delay and school resumes
August 17, 2015.

Hope to get a reply from you

Thanks

Hello suxes2005,

If we said we'd get back to you, we will! Tell your friend that they reach out to us and check on their status by emailing ConsularAbuja@state.gov or LagosNIV@state.gov (depending on where he applied).

Gud evening vo, pls my question is this, can some one that applied for u.s lottery some years backs be considered as filing an immigration petition as asked in ds 160 form and applying for u.s lottery affect your non immigration visa chances. Tanx

Hello dofGod,

Filling out a lottery submission does not count as applying for immigrant status. However, if you continued in the system and formal procedures were initiated, that does. If you are asked about it during the interview, be as honest as possible. Any discrepancies beween what you say and what our system says could damage your credibility as an applicant.

Hello medeay,

Are you undergoing the process of immigrating to the United States? This can certainly affect your chances as we consider your stated intent to immigrate in the coming years. However, just like all applicants, you are simply required to demonstrate your ties to Nigeria and legitimate purpose of travel.

Hello ic3tipz,

This is a very common question. There are no required documents for a B1/B2 visa application. Please bring your passport and confirmation page with receipt.

MarieEyre:
Dear VO,

I will be joining my fiancee soon in the USA (k1 visa). We plan on having an elaborate white wedding in the USA when we are ready to. I want my parents who are in Nigeria to attend. My parents are not entirely rich but they have their own homes both in Lagos and in the East. People keep saying ones bank account has to be rich enough and also have a good job or businesses before a visit visa is granted. My question is since they are coming to attend my wedding and obviously would be invited by my fiance and his family in the US, would they still need to prove their finances. Would their C/O of landed properties suffice? Can a sponsor for their trip and stay at the time be included? Thank you.

Hello MarieEyre,

Financial means is just one way of demonstrating ties to Nigeria. They should be able to demonstrate professional, cultural, and/or familial ties to their homeland. Riches are not required to receive a US visa, just ability to cover your trip costs and enough ties to compel you to return home.

Dear VO,

Do we apply via drop box or go through the normal interview?. Let me give you a little background story of what formed my question.

My 3 year old daughter and i got a visiting Visa (BIB2) in Sept. 2013 and we were to visit for 13 days. i became sick and could not travel as planned but fortunately for me 'the sickness' was a good one (was trying for a second child then). We eventually postponed the trip until when i got better and also for my daughter to be able to be a little bride to my friend who lives in Houston....the one we were going to visit. The wedding was close to my delivery period and we decided to kill several birds (visit, wedding and delivery) with the same stone.

We succeeded after we were detained for long at Houston airport by the immigration officers and by God's intervention we were allowed.

Now to my question, our Visa will be expiring in September and we are planning another visit, however, i would not want to go through the same ordeal. Considering that i am ready for another baby (not pregnant yet) and would like to have the next one in the US (enjoyed the treatment i got at the hospital and my doctor was very nice and cool). I will like to get a Visiting Visa as i am planning to take my kids on Vacation and also paradventure i get pregnant i will like to be able to use same Visa to have a baby in the USA again.

What route should i go? The Drop Box or regular interview?.

I honestly don't understand what you mean by "verify the letters sent from Homeland." Your friend's best best is to contact LagosNIV@state.gov to get additional information on his/her case.

Applying to the visa lottery does not negatively affect your ability to get a tourist visa.

Thanks for your input and concern.

Homeland Security sent two letters when the review
was going on.

First was to confirm and the second was to clear
him of any wrong doings.

I told him to send a mail this morning.

I really appreciate your time.

Dear VO:

I commend you highly for this helpful thread. Please keep up the good work. Now to my issue. I am a student studying in the USA and my mum plans to visit me in Jan. 2016. She already has a valid US visa which was issued to her in April 2015. The reason she applied for that visa was her intention to attend my graduation which unfortunately, she could not attend because of work. However, on her DS 160, she stated her destination was Tennessee; my former state of residence but now there is a change of plan as i no longer live in TN but now reside in Virginia where i'm pursuing a higher degree. My question now is, will she encounter any problem at the POE (she plans to come in through washington dulles) if she explains to the CBP officer that she is going to Virginia instead of TN as already mentioned on her DS 160? I wanted to email the US embassy about this sudden change but i do not know if this is appropriate. Keep in mind this is her first travel to the US. I look forward to reading from you. Many thanks.

My cousin was trying to fill out a DS160 application for her daughter. She got an error message "An unexpected error has occurred while processing your previous request. The error has been reported to the site administrator; no further action is required". Since then, she has not been able to proceed with the application.

Please advise what she can do, she has almost concluded with the application and was about to submit before having this error.

Dear V.O,
I've just been admitted into UALR and scheduled an expedited interview at the Lagos consulate which was duly granted for the 12th of August. My problem is I have to attend mandatory orientation program on the 11th and 12th of August which I explained when I applied for the expedited date. Please what can I do as the orientation is important for class registration? I have been advised to look into changing my interview location to Abuja as the dates are usually more accommodating but there's no way to really know what dates are available there without registering using the same parameters as those I used to setup my Lagos interview. I neither want to cancel my present appointment without being sure of Abuja's available dates nor do I want to end up having two appointments. Please what would you advise me to do? Is there any way to check available dates in Abuja and reschedule to that location if favourable without breaching any rule? Thanks for the anticipated help!
