We've got more than 3,000 Hectares of land with C of O and we intend to sell cheaply for Agriculture and Agro-allied purposes.

The land is situated along Ilorin Ogbomosho Old road.

Yes, it is possible but I don't think its advisable. If your boars decide to fight instead of mate, u will probably end up with dead pigs.
The ideal is a boar & a sow but If you are having space constraints mayb u shld put 1 boar with 2 sows. Two active boars in the same room is asking for trouble.

You can put gilts/ sows together without any issues, as long as they are roughly same size so they don't bully each other when feeding. For boars, as long as they were raised together its ok too. But I wouldn't advise putting strange boars together. Also, even when raised together, 1ce you have removed any of them (probably to mate) don't return it. They will likeky see it as a stranger/competitor so fighting will follow. I'm not talking about play fight o; I mean serious "I won't leave you till you die" fight.

For the start up pig farmers. Let me do you a bit of business analysis to help you with the minimum investment ( in terms of how many pigs you should raise and sell per annum) to make to be a profitable pig farmer.

Here it goes:

Profit = Sales - Total Cost. ............ equation 1
Profit = Sales - ( Fixed cost + Variable cost )...............equation 2

Fixed Cost- these are costs you incur whether you like it or not. For example staff salary, rentage, interest on loan, enery cost, management cost. etc.

Variable Cost- these are costs associated with the products ( pigs ) you are producing . They increase or decrease as the volume of product increases or decreases. Eg feed, medications. Weaner purchase. Etc.

Now, for any business , your interest is to make profit. To make profit, you must cover both your variable and fixed costs, otherwise you will run at a loss. Therefore, you must break even to start making profit.

The break even point is the point when your profit totally covers all your costs.

At break even, Profit = 0 .....................Equation 3

Therefore our equation 1 becomes

Profit = 0 = Sales - ( Fixed Cost + Variable Cost)...............Equation 4

Therefore, at break even point,

Sales = Fixed Cost + Variable Cost. ...............Equation 5

Remember that Pigs are sold per kg. therefore, our total annual sales is

Number of kg of pigs sold x unit price ( Selling price varies between N280 and N300)

Equation 5 becomes

Quantity (kg) x Unit Selling Price = Fixed Cost + Quantity (kg)x Unit Cost Price.................Equation 6

If we rearrange this equation it will be:

Fixed Cost = Q*Unit Selling Price - Q*Unit Cost Price.

Fixed Cost = Q * ( Unit Selling Price - Unit Cost Price)

Q = Fixed Cost/(Unit Selling price - Unit Cost Price).................Equation 7

Q, here represents the minimum number of kg of pigs we must sell per month ( or per annum ) to break even.

For every kg of pig we sell. It cost us money . I have previously explained the concept of FCR. Let's assume your FCR is 4. And our average cost of feed is N50. Therefore, It will cost you N200 to produce 1kg of pig.

So let's assume what your fixed cost will be.

You hired 2 staff @ N15,000 each. You allocate to yourself N10k for all cost of running around. Other sundry fixed cost at N10k ( veterinary doctor and other expenses). Let us assume that your total monthly cost is N50,000.

From question 7

Q= 50,000 / (N280- N200)= 50,000/80. = 625kg

From above, If we assume that the average size of your pigs are 63kg, it means you must sell a minimum of 10 pigs per month to break even.

So annually, you must raise and sell 120 pigs of that size. If you don't, you are running at a loss. This should not be a big deal if you plan your business well. We already know that a pig can farrow up to 20 piglets per annum under good management.

Also, as a wise startup farmer, it might make sense for you to buy weaners for fattening from other farmers and raise while you wait for your own sows to start farrowing.

If you want to test your own profitabliiy, change each parameter ( like the fixed cost, feed cost per kg, selling price and others ) and know how much investment you need to make.

Brilliantly said.
Bravo

Jedisco,

Well, I think Oga Lagbaja has done justice to your questions, but since u request us to comment, I will addd my 2 cents.

*1) I don't think u can compare pigggery n poultry, piggery is long term, it takes minimum of 18months to break even, compared to poultry ( broilers) cld be 10weeks.
Also poultry farmers in Nigeria have been able to come together n develop it so well, that you can gets good breeds, equipments, vaccines etc ; that we pig farmers haven't been able to do.

To answer ur question, I think if. It's alll about profit: I think. U shdnt even consider farming in the first place, passion shd come first.if you don't have passion for pigs, I think poultry will be more profitable

2). It is difficult to calc; depends on breed, feed and management; pigs in developed countries convert @ 2.3kg to 1kg weight, in Nigeria.. lots of farmers don't know, you. Will find some pigs that convert @ 4kg; some @ 6kg, some @ 8kg.. I guess it's hard to tell, also depends on the feed; and management. I think the major advantage is, when you sell, you make your money in bulk

3) am located in ilorin.. most pig farmers are in the. S.West, they have a better weather than we in the north and get more bi-product ( BDG,PKC, Gala waste etc
; but we in the north have cheap maize, which is 60percent of feed for pigs in developed. Countries.
Am sure you will find some farmers in kaduna; find what they feed

4) I always advice to ensure you get a. Sizeable land, I honestly think 4plots is small, unless u are sure to acquire more soon; I will recommend a minimum of 20plots, except you intend to start. Andd move to a permanent site within 2-3yrs. Also water, Please ensure you have a borehole; piggery require about 4,000 liters a day if you intend to have about 100 pigs, water is very very important.
Pigs ain't easy to steal, i dont know much about crime in KD

5) housing: depends on materials etc, a standard pen whichh can accommodate about 100pigs will. Cost you between 800k -2Milllion, depending on the type of flooring you intend to use and labour cost also your roofing materials ( Abestos, roofing sheet or tapulin)

6). Pigs smell is worst than that of birds.
Also your waste is more, so you need adequate land to dispose your waste

7) No, you can't channel ur waste to a river. Pls don't do such, dig a pit, or spread it on 2plots of land, when it's dry, bag it; am sure vegetable farmers will buy it of you, or you can use it to grow crops

cool alots of people have piggery n poultry, my poultry pays my monthly running cost for the farm, while the pig is forr the long n medium term; a few. People I know also have piggery n fishery together, some vegetables n piggery.

9) depends on how the pen is designed, e.g I have just 1 person taking care of 150 pigs, because my water is automated, my liquid waste is also automated, all they do is feed n take the solid waste; if you also do so, then u can also have 1 or 2 people, but if everything has to be manual, then you might require more hands,

Most times in Nigeria, we think labour Is cheap, but most of the cheap labour isn't effective. I will recommend atleast ensure you have drinking nipples.

10) We have registered Pork Producers Association of Nigeria; info will soon be avail on how to join etc.

* Last advice, don't rush into it; look for pig farmers around you, find out how it's been done, but dont limit yourself to that.
You won't make money for the first 2yrs, ensure you have enough money to feed for 2yrs. Read, read, learn, don't rush into it.
If you don't have passion for it, don't start it.
If you can get a pen to rent, maybe you start with that and later start yours, when you have gained experience

Hope my 2cent advice was worth reading.

Remain blessed.
I will find a way to meet you in person when next i come to Ilorin.

You have done marvelously well

Good day bro,
If you are using spent grain (brewery waste) it should not be more than 25% of the whole feed ration.
Good day. Wish you all the best

Hello farmers in d house.
This is my 1st time posting here.
We have owned a pig farm for about 8yrs now. But recently just started having problems with gilts being served. This is d 3rd time in d past few months dis is happening. When gilts are served, at about 4-6 weeks, a few start trembling and seem paralyzed in d hind limbs, tho dey are still able to feed and stand up for a few seconds. Some recover but either miscarry or have stillbirth or low litters of 3-4 (after much struggle)
After d whole episode, d pigs seem not to be able to ever recover, the look lean an malnourished but agile. The whole thinformation is disheartening.
Pls does anyone have experience with dis type of problem? We need help ASAP.

Thanks!

Iyomomo congrats!

As for the pigs, have you found out what the problem is?
