Is A Car A Necessity? by deathwing(m): 3:55pm On Jul 14, 2015 |
What exactly is the rationale behind owning an automobile? Should I own a car because I am an adult who should have a dependable means of transportation, or should my wealth/bank balance determine my car ownership? The issue here isn't a cost of maintenance, because there is a car for every segment. What do you guys think? I am tired of the bus life, even though I reside in a well connected part of the city. I almost never go out if not to work. Despite this, I feel like having a car to call upon at any point of the day or night MIGHT be a good idea, regardless of the cost. In fact, I feel like having a car and being able to reach places in short notice may change the way I relate with other people, because at this point...I do not engage in any form of socialising It's just a feeling tho. Or maybe I'm psyching myself into getting one before I'm 'spiritually ready' |

@Op, I'm very sure you are still single. By the time you get married with kids, then you realize the value of a vehicle can never be over emphasized. 18 Likes |

@OP... ask people that have experienced real life emergencies at 1am then you decide for yourself if it is a necessity or not. 9 Likes |

Car ownership is not a luxury but a necessity. Apart from daily commute from and to work, emergencies situations do require you have one. I can infer from your post that you are single. During a heavy rain fall, it becomes very difficult to go to work or leave your office. Most often, you are at the mercy of other drivers (taxis & friends) to determine when you leave a particular place. A car also offers you a great measure of comfort. You decide what time you leave. By the time you are married & kids start coming, it's a different experience. If you live in Europe where transportation system is well organized, then, it may not matter. 8 Likes |

Anoda side of dis is weda his income can carry it. Eg a man who earns 70k,does it make sense he buys a car? |
Re: Is A Car A Necessity? by deathwing(m): 6:20pm On Jul 14, 2015 |
yak: That's not an issue. There is a car for every segment. It's not 'by force' to buy corolla or bmw before you drive. I am asking about the necessity of a car. 11 Likes |

deathwing: Don't repel prosperity and good life by questioning rationale behind being prosperous. Owing a vehicle is prosperity in action, because its a change of level. Whether the person chooses to be grateful for the prosperity that's coming to him/her to attract more good life or not is left for him/her. Prosperity constantly flows in ones life when he or she wishes it to him/herself and appreciate them as they come and not analyze , repel or become ungrateful when Universe or God brings them to their attention. Having a vehicle is a good life. If you see it as one, it becomes one to you. If you see a vehicle as a liability, it becomes your reality as well, that is, a liability. What you wished for or your interpretation of good life are your prayers, because what you give out is what you receive back. Seeing a vehicle as liability will draw more circumstances that will make you struggle and spend all you have to keep the car on the road, while one that appreciates and see it as good life will continue to get more circumstances that will bring in more and continue been elevated financially and others. That's why some struggle to have and keep only 1 car on the road, while some keep getting more and more vehicles as more good life flows into their lives. What you interpret a vehicle as becomes your reality, because that's your prayer or wish. Ikenna 15 Likes |

It's a necessity please, especially for a corporate person that has been working for a while. Wearing a suit and standing at the busstop for hours in periods where there are no buses can be hellish! And for people like me that may get to leave the office like 10 in the night on some days, it's very unsafe moving around with my laptop at that time of the night. So yes, it's a necessity! 1 Like 1 Share |

I went for a meeting last week with my partner and he insisted we rode in a convoy to meet the client. I wanted to save fuel by parking at his place and rolling with him but we ended up rolling seperately in convoy. When we were leaving the meeting and we both remotely opened our cars from afar and both cars answered in unison, the client that was unco-operative suddenly laughed and became friendly....... he was like '' no wonder we refused to reduce our fee''....... and he invited us to hang out with him this weekend. In Nigeria, people are very class conscious and a car apart from being convenient also makes people accept and listen to you better. It's shallow but it's the Nigerian way. 21 Likes |

deathwing: From your lifestyle, you may not need one yet. Dont get it twisted, car ownership does have its cost (maintenance, fuelling, mishaps) so if not NECCESSARY, leave till when it is else you may end up having a car and still take the bus. Some see car ownership as a status symbol, same way some see phones as luxuries. I DONT. Do whatever works for YOU and just YOU. |

LKO: 620k (It's a manual). The cotonou exchange rate was not smiling at all o. We got 394 to 1000naira instead of the usual 350/370 or so. It's a lovely car. God golf 4 type engine. Servicing and all will be done before the weekend. Still learning to drive tho

Re: Is A Car A Necessity? by LKO(m): 8:50am On Jul 28, 2015 |
deathwing: Congrats! I would also be getting d manual also. U went wit d dealer to Cotonou? Why did u get d one with a golf 4 engine? Does it have chilling AC? A dealer in nairaland said I would get it for 500k. Can u paste a pix of d ride? Thanks. |
Re: Is A Car A Necessity? by deathwing(m): 8:59am On Jul 28, 2015 |
LKO: The cars didn't come with AC gas. I have to fill it up. Costs about 1500 or so. But the wiring for the AC is in perfect condition. Already attached a pix in my previous post, kindly refresh. I was skeptical about the 1.6, but then I found out (through the VIN) the golf was made in 1997 and that the engine was used in some golf 4s of the time. Yup, I went with an agent. 1 Like |

@OP hw are u doing wit ur ride? hope u are enjoying it. I also believe u are now a PRO in driving |
Re: Is A Car A Necessity? by deathwing(m): 3:25pm On Sep 17, 2015 |
yak: Yes o. I don turn pro. Would never have believed it if I'd been told I'd be a passable driver now. I don't need to get the Learners permit I had planned on. My clutch contro is almost perfect now, and I've begun dragging space with those lagos pblic buses. Having a car has opened me to new realms of responsibility. Been hopping around mechanics but I've found the perfect one. The guy loves the car so much more than even I, the owner. I'm totally in love with the AC of the golf 3. It gets so cold so very quickly, I find it hard to believe people had this kinda luxury in 1996! I have to shut it off every now and then while driving. Fuel economy is top notch. Haven't filled the tank yet tho. Unfortunately I'm not technical at heart, would have loved to try some DIY fixes myself. Recently put it some security features. My window was smashed in the middle of one night last week, so now I have a battery guard and that 'fuel-lock' security, that once saved my father's mercedes 230e from being driven far by armed robbers in the early 1990s. 1 Like |
