Salary is not a national phenomenal, not all states are owing the reason why that of Imo and Abia pain me most is that both states receive the highest allocation in Igboland with other sundry incentives and rewards attached to their status.
Its very painful and shameful of Rochas to be sincere, even going as far as threatnening the long suffering workers with sack and mass dismissal.

Actually I campaigned for him during the 2011 race against Ohakim but am very disappointed over the man.

Not just Owerri but Nigeria. We have almost forgotten public tap ever existed. Anyway with 30k you can get borehole anywhere in Owerri or Port Harcourt.

In bold,

Your job of devil's advocate. Take note: citizens resorting to Private Water boreholes is a mark of dishonest government leadership. Water from private boreholes are mostly unwholesome.

Supply of treated running water for the citizens is the first debt a government owes its citizens. No place - including Owerri - merits the name township or city, if it has no supply of treated running water.

Provision of running water costs more than pea nuts, that's why some disingenuous Nigerian leaders run away from it, but instead go for less costly road construction.

Ohakim was promising to start the next Imo state surface water supply scheme meant for Orlu zone when Okorocha came to office. One of Okorocha's first acts in office was to decree that water supply in Imo state was to be become a private affair - translate: dig private water boreholes.

Jah in future shall send leaders who care for Imoites.

Restoring Pipe-Borne water in our cities
Posted by The Leader News Online on Saturday, July 6, 2013

It is generally believed that the four most basic needs of man are: air, water, food, and shelter, in that order. That water ranks second in man’s hierarchy of needs speaks volumes about its indispensability to life. Perhaps this explains why the creator of the universe made water to comprise three quarters of the entire surface of the earth in the form of seas, rivers and lakes.
Man needs water to drink, wash and clean up his surroundings, while plants need water to sustain their life. This informed the reason why politicians seeking the people’s mandate always, include potable water in the list of Democracy Dividends they dangle before the electorate.
It is on this basis that we deprecate the insensitivity of our present day governments in general and the Imo State Government in particular which have allowed the production and distribution of pipe borne water to their citizens for domestic and commercial consumption die a natural death. The vogue now is for each individual, family and organization to sink their own borehole. Whether the borehole is drilled to the required depth and specifications, whether the underground water seeping into the borehole are from sewage or other contaminated toxic deposits, does not matter, especially to commercial water vendors.
The last major water project the government executed for this state was by late Governor Sam Mbakwe. This Project handled by the JDP Company was of high international standard. This facility with a dam behind fire service station Owerri was not maintained but allowed to dilapidate until it stopped functioning. Subsequent governments of Imo State have refused to revitalise this water facility or build a new one. This has made Public Water Supply part of moon-light story – “once upon a time…”
While water bore holes can be sunk in private premises to supply water in arid regions or isolated communities, the universal best practice, is to supply water to the public using water treatment plants and adding such chemicals as chlorine and distributing same through underground pipes certified safe by health experts, especially in urban centres. Depending on water from private bore holes was rare in yester years as it was obvious that there was no how sufficient water of the right quality from such source can meet the needs of households, organizations, institutions and industries.
Apart from their questionable standard and expensive costs, the proliferation of water boreholes deface the environment. Up till the 1990s, boreholes were uncommon but they are all ever our cities today. Infact some grown up boys and girls of today, cannot boast of ever drawing water from a public pipe borne water tap. All that most residents of Owerri and environ consume is water from hygienically-uncertified boreholes.
We deplore this dangerous trend where everybody has to generate their own water, as it constitutes health hazard. As long as households, schools, health institutions, markets and even industries lack access to cheap and safe water, the health standard of the populace will continue to deteriorate. Resorting to nearby streams if any, is not a safe alternative either, as many streams around Owerri, such as the Otamiri, Nworie etc have become highly polluted with human, hospital, industrial and other toxic wastes.
It beats our imagination therefore to understand why the Imo State Government has failed to see the need to restore pipe borne water in town even with its robust Federal Monthly Financial allocations and improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) constantly announced by government itself. We are aware that it does not cost a fortune to access the partnership of multi–national corporations such as the World Bank and UNICEF that are ever at the beck and call of organizations and agencies that pay up the requisite counterpart funds for such projects.
Any talk about Democracy Dividends that sweeps under the carpet the supply of pipe borne water to the public amounts to deceit. So does the advertisement of a policy of Health-at-Door step without restoration of pipe borne water and public taps, especially in urban centres make a mockery of every other so-called investment in the Health Sector.
Urgent steps should therefore be taken by the relevant ministry, corporation and agency to restore pipe borne water to Imo People.

http://theleaderassumpta.com/2013/07/06/restoring-pipe-borne-water-in-our-cities/

The Owerri surface water supply scheme did cost Imo state a fortune, built to last very long - up till today.
It served Owerri for more than a decade before careless governments allowed it to start to rot during the military era.

Okigwe water scheme also cost Imo state government a fortune, was about to be completed by Udenwa and Ararume before Ohakim came in, it was not utilized till today, but infrastructures for both schemes still lie underground in both areas, and can still be reactivated or remodeled by a willing govt.

Owerri don't need jumping from one country to another another seeking for investors, the best thing is for the government to develop tourism and ICT and see Owerri take over.

Oil is down, serious minded governments are pushing for sustainable development, what we need is for 2 more higher institutions around Owerri, make the roads accessible and clean up the city.

Imo rich should leverage on this opportunity, Imo can't be viable as a commercial and industrial state because she inbetween Aba and Onitsha rather she leverage on what those two states lack and open up herself for massive inflow of cash.

One beautiful thing with Owerri is that those that will be fueling the economy don't have to reside here, they will always trooupe in during weekends and festive seasons.

What is required now to make Owerri take her pride of place is similar thing Enugu need to take over Eastern economy.
Invest in tourism, ICT and transportation, organize events that will always attract visitors like Mbari Festival, New Yam Festival, create Owerri City Carnival, Fashion Shows, Education Fairs, Golf Tourneys, build Cinemas and Shopping Malls...do these and watch Owerri explode

What do you mean, Ogun State has 17 while 12 out of it are located one place.
If Owerri can host as much as 100 universities I will like it because it will help in developing the economy of the state and visitors will be always available to spend on hotels, eateries, shops, museums, house rent and other things that help in boasting the economy of a state.

True but most people view things differently. I earlier thought Igbos were together, hence my suggestion for Enugu as a place for corporate headquaters of Igbo owned companies with highrises, Owerri headquaters of tourism and relaxation while Aba, Onitsha and Nnewi maintain their commercial and industrial status.

However your fellow Igbos from Anambra started attacking other Igbos thereby prompting every State to be independent of the other. We can no longer work in synergy as Igbos which means we will all end up as jack of all thread and master of none.

Fool you can never live without mentioning Anambra.

You lots better go and develop your imo state to be economically viable because no state will leave any area of development be it industrialization, commercialization or tourism to any state to specialize. Every state should have a bit of everything. We cannot move the multi-floors ongoing Headquarters of Orient Petroleum from Awka to elsewhere or Onitsha will move its ongoing 5 star resort(Radisson Blu) and mall elsewhere just because you want us to build regionalism. Develop your economy and reap from it. Simple!

So you can sleep on NL all you want writting rubbish as if anybody or state will come and say now take up this particular area of the economy for your state alone.

Every state should go independent and develop at their own pace. This is the same reason imo state cannot pay salaries running into sveral months and has gone bankrupt because it felt the whole SE will fold their arms for them to take up a particular area of the economy.

Let every state develop in all directions that way its economy will expand and blossom. Have every bit of all the areas of the economy in your state..that is the way to GO!

Owerri can have more universities. Because he fears competition against his Rochas Foundation university in Ideato south, Gov. Okorocha adamantly refuses location of university any where near Orlu.

These days, any group that wants to establish a university in Imo state, Rochas promises the group N100 million and land approval, provided the site is not anywhere near Orlu.

Why do you people care so much about universities when those who have graduated are busy roaming the streets of other states looking for jobs? Personally, I feel that building universities without building enough industries to absorb graduates means creating problem for ourselves and indeed Nigeria. Everyone must not go to university. Whatever happened to technical and vocational schools?

On the other hand, no matter what anyone thinks about imo being surrounded by Aba and Onitsha, I think it's important Imo builds her own industries not necessarily in Owerri but Okigwe or Orlu to create jobs for Ndi Imo and other Igbos. And who says we can't combine tourism and industries? Yes, we can because Lagos is a good example.

I just feel bad that S/East governors don't plan together. Why do we have to await federal govt to revive the coal in Enugu when we know that doing so as a people would create lots jobs for the Igbos? I think the governors can get a license (if that is necessary) from FG, pool their resources together, sign an MoU on how the revenue generated from coal can be shared, how the state indigenes will be employed, and how much power each state gets if the coal would be used for electricity generation.
