1. First of all, a national reorientation/awareness to
change people's perception of rape! Most people don't
see it as a big deal and the rest just want to keep it hush
hush cos of the stigma & guilt that follows the victim

2. Create a National database for "Convicted" sex offenders that can be accessed by Schools & any employer of labour

3. There should be a law requiring Sex offenders to inform
neighbours & Community leaders of their status

4. Stiffer Penalty for the crime & for crying wolf!

5. Police officers (many female ones) and other victim support professionals have to be trained to encourage victims to come forward. No need to be ashamed.

6. Anonymity for victims (with measures to guard against
spurious & malicious accusations). Stiff penalty for false
accusation.

7. Many people in Nigeria are careless with their children - they need to be a lot more vigilant. Why do strange people have access to their children? Why are the parents not around? Why are so many people having children that they cannot care for?Sadly it is often the parents who are the indirect facilitators of abuse by way of their neglect.

8. Sex education is a must. If we, as parents, don't teach our children about sex they will learn it from other sources. Namely; friends, TV and porn. None of these three sources are ideal. TV distorts what relationships are really like, and creates false expectations. Porn also creates expectations, ideals and attitudes that are counter productive to healthy relationships.

9. Women have changed. Laws have changed. But the
education given to the male child hasn't been attacked
with as much severity as the first two. Men are predators,
true. They are hunters, true again. But they do not have to
be sociopaths. Shift the awareness of how inhumane rape
is to the men for once. Spend twice as much time as has
been spent teaching women to be decent, and focus on
getting the disgusting act of rape from the men.
Also, if there's the possibility of having an executive arm
of the police handle crimes of this nature (if it doesn't
already exist) that will be superb.

b) Public campaign across the nation by NL volunteers
Dedicated NL volunteer team (Investigators, counsellors and lawyers) willing to respond to reported cases within a short period of time.

c) Free banners permanently displayed on NL linked to a

A simple case was the issue of marriage or sexual consent whereby senator anyanwu put forward a notion and even so called lawyers argue about it and misinterpreting it to mean something all for the sake of scoring cheap political points...

Simple.... Rape....... 35yrs imprisonment... Parole option after 20yrs...


Make the layman on the street know what an action attracts and the penalty { no one wants to spend the best part of his life behind bars}

And this can be achieved once corruption and the police force has been reorganized

We are working on producing pampers that will cover female children from head to toe so that they can also be decent, and we will also be covering our teenagers with Rafia leaves so that rapists won't see them. Our little boys who get molested too, we will surely sew Agbada for them so they can appear decent to anyone who wants to rape them.

I have never supported jungle justice until now. I think the best thing to do is to castrate anybody found guilty of rape. Especially if their victims are minors who can't wear provocative dresses to tempt them.
But care must be taken as many ladies will find rape allegation a perfect strategy to get back at their male offenders.

@ topic, I believe in reorientation. The average person out there is warped and almost imbecilic in reasoning. No offense.
How do you explain blaming and shaming victims while the perp goes around proudly like he did nothing. An added trauma on top of the one they've already been subjected to during the rape?
How do you explain a victims being asked "what were you wearing when it happened?". A simple but powerful question that connotes it is not the criminal's fault but the victims. How do you explain everyone around including law enforcement hushing victims and sometimes reprimanding them for not collecting money to just overlook what was done to them?

Until such diseased mindsets are scraped from among us, we would be pouring water on stone.
We need an overhaul. A very very sensational (if exaggerated) campaign against any form of sexual offenses regardless of if the victim walked out of his or her house neykid. Starting from the grassroots. Primary schools and working upwards. hopefully catch those ones young if we are lucky, some who have already grown with such mindsets will learn better.

Punishment too (long long jail terms). Like someone already suggested.
I don't even know how the sex offenders list will work when we don't have active database. How many employers can afford to run background checks in Nigeria. Maybe the big companies. But the smaller ones in smaller communities can't do such. They'll just employ a pedophile and set him or her to babysit kids.

Is quite unfortunate that we're in a country where the laws is only meant for the poor masses, the rich sit, sleep and wake on it,the only way this can be curbed is to set a law that anyone caught on the act will either go to jail or face death either by hanging or shooting and then take it serious, by the time the govt set's one or two Examples,I bet you,people will definitely learn their lessons because the rate of this act is getting very alarming in our country and our girls also have a very important role to play in other for this act to cut down or stop entirely.

Like you said, someone could be accused falsely but before we know he's innocent, he's already been killed in moments of passionate anger.

The solution for justice must rely on our judicial system. That's where we need to change things to make sure criminals don't get away with horrendous offenses because our justice system is slack.
