opekunleope: As Slimmy advised, please kindly defer. I had a similar issue. But if you were given funding, ask your graduate coordinator if you are gonna lose your admission when you defer. |

Snazzygirl: LOL Auntie Snazzy girl I know about the Secured credit card and for BOA one of the requirements is to make a deposit which would stand as a collateral if you default in your payments...Now I don't remember ever making any deposit for the card. Maybe there's something about my card I don't know about. |

opekunleope: Yes you can. I once Google about that too. If you have 2days to your resumption you can still go to the embassy because it has nothing to do with your interview. If your school cannot extend for a week for you....all you need to do is defer your admission to the next session. The most important thing here is the visa |

slimmy05: I am surprised to hear that just as you are too. The only type of credit card a bank would give without an SSN is the secured credit card that requires the customer to deposit their own money, make expenses and pay back. Once the customer obtains an SSN, the secured credit card could be converted to an unsecured one (i.e. regular credit card). I have told him to mention the type of card he says his bank gave him without an SSN, if not a secured credit card. It is no secret. Nothing is hidden in America. I'm sure Stewee knows his credit card is the secured credit card, he is only delaying admitting so. 2 Likes |

biikeys: Most banks offer secured cards, capital one, wells fargo etc all offer secured credit cards to those without SSN with the usual minimum security deposit of $300. |

biikeys:The credit card you get are the ones you preload just like netspend cards. Yes ITIN serves as a means of Identification, I guess thats what people who come with B1/B2 acquire. |

Stewee: You don't have to tell us anyway that you have a secured credit card aka 'glorified debit card'. When you could easily apply to a few that will approve you of a regular credit card instantly of same $300 limit as your secured credit card, even with no prior credit history. 1 Like |

musicwriter: Living within one's means is definitely encouraged and those who know me in person know that I always advice people to do so. But there are just certain things in this country that to get you definitely need a credit history. I feel that I am beginning to sound like I am coercing people to go for credit cards that they do not want. No. I am simply clearing misconceptions that I have noticed many people seem to have on here. Certain things like buying a home in this country, you would definitely need to obtain a loan (mortgage) from a bank and pay that loan back to the bank gradually until you finish paying it off because houses in this country are expensive and most Americans don't buy land and build houses according to your pace until you finish building as we do in Nigeria but they buy already made homes. That's just how the country system has been made. There are no 2 ways about it. Except you are into business and can afford to buy a house from your business profits, other than that you can't really sidestep this process. 2 Likes |
