Loooool. Uncle Stewee, there is no way this is a fact. Federal law requires that everybody opening an account in the US must be properly identified. The mode of identification used by banks in the US is the SSN. No bank will issue a credit card to a non resident alien without SSN. Also, there is no relationship between getting a credit card and debit card use. Maybe you are referring to the "Secured credit card" which is just a "glorified debit card" whose activity is shared with the major credit bureaus to build credit history.

LOL
Auntie Snazzy girl
I know about the Secured credit card and for BOA one of the requirements is to make a deposit which would stand as a collateral if you default in your payments...Now I don't remember ever making any deposit for the card.

Maybe there's something about my card I don't know about.

Not true. BofA does, infact with undocumented immigrants..and SSN is not the only means of identification also,ITIN can serve the same purpose.

Oh thank you for your inputs...

What is ITIN?

Snazzygirl:

Bros, I never said SSN is the ONLY means of identification. I agree with you that ITIN can serve the same purpose, but how does that apply to the context right now? How many international students have ITIN? The average intl student focuses on the SSN, because we all want to work. As for BofA giving undocumented immigrants "unsecured credit cards" without proper identification, I disagree sir cheesy

But how can you be sure?

You don work for BOA before ni? grin

bigfrancis21:

You're referring to the secured credit card which does not come with money pre-loaded in it but you have to deposit your own money in it, say $350, spend and pay back the money. With a secured credit card, you are only spending and paying back your own money. This is in contrast with regular credit cards that come pre-loaded with an amount of money that you need an SSN to apply for. Those without an SSN can get the secured credit card but there is usually a limit to the line you can get on it, usually small amounts such as $300, $500 etc.

The secured credit card is basically building a credit history but using your own money. When you are approved for a secured credit card of $350 credit line and it arrives at your address, you are required to deposit an amount equal to $350 into the card and start using it.

Thus, in effect you can't apply for a secured credit card just because you want to use it to pay tuition, as someone had initially thought.

Bigfrancis trust me when I say.. I did no such deposit!

I can't be that paranoid that I'll do a thing like that and not know.

What is ITIN?

It's just a taxpayer number for non-resident aliens not eligible for SSN, and issued by IRS.

Santaclaus, there is absolutely no you can survive with $10/hr to pay semester fee of $12,000. It is better you start looking into Community Colleges, then after your 2 years associates, you can go ahead and do your OPT (12-17 months). That still wouldn't help except you plan on using the saved cash to pursue your GC.

Thanks for the info and really grateful. How much are we looking at here if one is to transfer to a community college after 6months I can't remember were I saw that probably this thread.

Yes you can. I once Google about that too. If you have 2days to your resumption you can still go to the embassy because it has nothing to do with your interview. If your school cannot extend for a week for you....all you need to do is defer your admission to the next session. The most important thing here is the visa

I am surprised to hear that just as you are too. The only type of credit card a bank would give without an SSN is the secured credit card that requires the customer to deposit their own money, make expenses and pay back. Once the customer obtains an SSN, the secured credit card could be converted to an unsecured one (i.e. regular credit card).

I have told him to mention the type of card he says his bank gave him without an SSN, if not a secured credit card. It is no secret. Nothing is hidden in America.

I'm sure Stewee knows his credit card is the secured credit card, he is only delaying admitting so. grin

Most banks offer secured cards, capital one, wells fargo etc all offer secured credit cards to those without SSN with the usual minimum security deposit of $300.

The credit card you get are the ones you preload just like netspend cards. Yes ITIN serves as a means of Identification, I guess thats what people who come with B1/B2 acquire.

You don't have to tell us anyway that you have a secured credit card aka 'glorified debit card'. grin

When you could easily apply to a few that will approve you of a regular credit card instantly of same $300 limit as your secured credit card, even with no prior credit history.

If you think I don't understand how it work, then it's clear you don't have the statistics on how many Americans are in debt. Average debt on the head of every American is about $6,000 (google it). Well, I forgot to add, not everybody is cutout for credits. Yes, some people can manage it well and it was said in that article.

Well, the purpose was not to doomsday but to encourage Africans to live within their means. If you'll live within your means, you'll have no problem with credit cards. As long as this's understood, I'm fine.

Living within one's means is definitely encouraged and those who know me in person know that I always advice people to do so. But there are just certain things in this country that to get you definitely need a credit history. I feel that I am beginning to sound like I am coercing people to go for credit cards that they do not want. No. I am simply clearing misconceptions that I have noticed many people seem to have on here.

Certain things like buying a home in this country, you would definitely need to obtain a loan (mortgage) from a bank and pay that loan back to the bank gradually until you finish paying it off because houses in this country are expensive and most Americans don't buy land and build houses according to your pace until you finish building as we do in Nigeria but they buy already made homes. That's just how the country system has been made. There are no 2 ways about it. Except you are into business and can afford to buy a house from your business profits, other than that you can't really sidestep this process.
