jln115: The single tube will go on the Hornet. The 4-tube on their specialised Mambas in the interim until they've picked a light armour vehicle (personally, I think it should be the RG-32M). In the meantime, check out what Denel did for the French with their Panhard VBL. And the last pic gives an idea of what it will look like on the Mamba. 1 Like

frumentius:With Denel's acquiring of BAE land systems, the chances of replacing our Casspirs and Mambas with RG series vehicles look better than ever, I would personally love if the RG 35 is picked for project sepula. Anyway getting back to the point, I agree 100% with the RG32, it would be a great vehicle for our Recces, and looking at your pics it seems the ingwe system has already been integrated on to the RG 32. |

jln115: If you mean the pic on the previous page, that's from one of the many test vehicles available to the Recces. The IPLS Ingwe has been test-fired on everything from Puma, DCD, Marauder and Casspir. The RG31 MK6 was a demonstrator. 1 Like |

jln115:Denel remain the only Africa based defense industry that is putting African product in the theatres of modern warfare. What you guys have done with your defense industry is nothing short of a wonderment considering the continent where all this is coming from. While the leaders of other African states are grappling for government funds to steal and public policies to sabotage in their own interest. Imagine a Africa with up to 4 Denels 2 Likes |

overhypedsteve:Trust me mate, our leaders are far from perfect, after all T.I.A.(This is Africa). As with any other country in Africa(or the World for that matter) our Defence force/industry suffer due to corruption as well, for exp thanks to our 1999 Arms Scandal we lost out on an additional Frigate, Sub and a couple of Gripen and Hawk jets. But you have to remember South Africa fought the biggest war this continent has seen since WW2, also through in the fact that we couldn't import weapons from the West due to sanctions or import from the east( Basically the enemy), We had no other choice but to develop our own. No other African country has been placed in the same situation, were it was forced to develop its own defence industry, there was always the option to import from either the East or West, SA had no such luxury. Its not impossible for African countries to develop their defence industries, there has been a lot of progress in Nigeria and Ethiopia especially, but I think its a bit unfair to compare the defence industries of these counties to that of South Africa's which had a 30 year head start. 3 Likes |

Henry120: Any reason why Nigeria purchased "naked" EC645, without the SAWS from Paramount that Airbus Helicopters offers all customers? We're talking 1) FN Herstal HMP–400 12.7 mm machine gun; 2) Nexter NC-621 20mm cannon; 3) FZ-233 70 mm rockets (guided rockets optional); 4) Denel’s Ingwe anti-tank missile; and 5) a choice of sensors (FLIR, TV, HUD, HMSD).

Frumentius, we actively tried to armour and up-grade our Light Utility Helicopters, but the new ones and the old ones. However, the U.S actively blocked every move we made including tipping of South-African Authorities to block a legitimate arms contract which included upgrades for our Light Utility Helos. However, we did up-grade our Agusta and Puma Helicopters with Rocket pods and FLIR |

africaken: Yeah that's it, thanks for Identifying the Vehicle. I think it's an Egyptian made Vehicle or from the UAE. I've always advocated the use of similar Vehicles for COIN in Nigeria, as it affords us the opportunities to note only reduce some of the soft skins we have in service, but to, most importantly patronize/increase the base of the number of local vehicles the military has in it's inventory. It is gratifying to see the Egyptians using them. |

overhypedsteve: Nobody willfully shares their Economic secrets, more so when it is military tech. However there could be "collaborations", thing is the other side would also need to bring in "something" significant to the partnership. For us in Nigeria, we only need more private participation in the Armouring, Defence and Electronics sector. A wholly state run Defence Industry won't work, no business run by the state works. If we can grow one " ASELAN" type company in the electronics sector, additional companies in the Armouring sector to improve competitiveness and opening up of the Arms& Ammo business. If we can do this, i fail to see how we cannot build what can become the largest Defence industry in Africa. |

Henry240: "western support" was limited to some serious cloak and dagger sh1t with the G5 gun (literally a case of "spooky" unmarked ships delivering cargoes composed of howitzer barrels in the dark of night) And sharing of nuclear secrets with isreal (they sold us some Jericho Ballistic missiles in a trade for some Russian air-defence equipment we captured in Angola) Thats about it, our major breakthroughs [ such as (at the time) having the most advanced periscopes in the world (so advanced that when we bought the Type 209's from the germans and we listed the periscope requirements, they thought were were joking/insane), MRAP tech, frequency-hopping radios, world smallest night-sights (at the time), advanced tandem-head charges for ATGM's (that still out penetrate all NATO/Ruski/Chinese counterparts), precision off-bore seekers for missiles, data-packing (from before datalinks), first "look to kill" HMD's, drones and various stand-off munitions... and boring stuff like the first wide-scale use of gortex in military apparel or face paint that doesnt run off when you sweat or odorless mosquito repellent, or the feild ration packs (rat packs) that were designed solely by nutritionists] was all 100% domestic The head start is a big non-statement, its not like anyone else in Africa was held back when we started, its just that we had the need, skills and money to develop faster and bigger than anyone else and frankly, as it stands right now, no one is going to catch us. 3 Likes |

Our Namibian cousins faced radio shortages when placed under sanctions for joining Zimbabwe in Kabila's fight with Rwanda and Uganda. Did they kvetch and moan, buy inferior products at inflated prices in dodgy deals? No. Being Southern Africans they knuckled down and manufactured their own. Now look at the results: "Namibian company Sat-Com is manufacturing hundreds of radios for the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) and recently received an export order for several hundred as it markets its range across Africa." http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=40191 4 Likes

patches689: Yes it is, infact it is one of the major factors that lead to general growth of South-Africa's Defence industry. Apartheid South-Africa and Rhodesia were considered as European "brotherly" countries, by the Europeans. The Israelis saw South-Africa as a fellow brother-in-arms, as they considered Apartheid South-Africa as been in the same situation as them (surrounded by hostile locals), hence the partnership. The Portuguese government actively smuggled Super Puma parts and general Helicopter parts for the Apartheid regime. So to come here and claim the growth of South-Africa's defence industry is down to ingenuity is downright ludicrous and absolute rubbish. When the British left Nigeria in 1960, my Country had a literacy rate of 5% or under, and virtually no infrastructure. This isn't the case for you South-Africans as the settlers arrived the South-African shores to settle there, and not to plunder and leave. So yes, you having a large defence industry is down to massive european support and having a significant head start. By the way, Egypt has the largest Defence Industry in Africa, they are already ahead, and the Moroccans and Algerians aren't far behind. |
