The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has welcomed and congratulated the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government of Nigeria for approving the setting up of governing structures to facilitate the implementation of recommendations of the UNEP report on Ogoniland.

MOSOP in a statement signed by Mr Bari-ala Kpalap, media advisor to President of MOSOP Mr Legbosi Pyagbara,said the decision of President Buhari to fast track the cleaning of Ogoniland is coming at a time when there have been growing skepticism driven by experiences of untoward politicisation of implementation of the report by the immediate past administration, the approval demonstrates a comforting shift from rhetoric to matching words with action and strengthens the confidence of Ogoni people in the government.

In reciprocation of the government’s response, MOSOP pledges to cooperate with the administration and other stakeholders to ensure a successful implementation of recommendations of the report.

The body said “we applaud the approach, we would appeal to the national government not to delay the constitution of the approved governance structures to enable urgent commencement of the Ogoni environmental remediation and restoration exercise.”

MOSOP implores Mr. President as a matter of urgency, call for nominations from the defined stakeholders to enhance composition of the Governing Council and the Board of Trustees of the intervention agency.

“Since Ogoni experiences high rainfall, which influences expansion of the pollution footprints and compounds our environmental nightmare attributable to the non-implementation of the report, further delay, as a matter of fact, would inflict on the report dire implications, which would require another study to validate earlier findings. The Ogoni people would therefore be greatly enlivened and satisfied at an urgent take-off of the clean-up and restoration exercise.”

MOSOP urged Ogoni people to realize that the commendable step taken by the federal government imposes on all a high sense of organization and unity of purpose. And it is therefore important that they avoid, even if tempted, tendencies capable of jeopardizing the process and making Ogoni people a laughing stock.

I for one will like this clean-up to be done all over the Niger Delta and not just Ogoni land. I find it ill-advised but then, it is a start that can be consolidated on.

We need strong policy on oil spillage and tougher laws against environmental degradation not just in the oil/gas producing places but all industrial processes. That's the way forward.

A step in the right direction is all this is but if not reciprocated everywhere, it becomes too political, makes it seem cosmetic and gives people the impression of you using divide and rule.

What facts? The President on tuesday asked that the process be sped up to start implementation and someone is opening a thread to rant about nothing on ground 3days later.
Like someone said sometimes ago, it's not about the frequency but the quality of opposition criticism

The whole Niger Delta knows Ogonis have a special case. It can only be a starting point by any serious administration hoping to do any environmental clean up of the region.

I am glad that Ogoni-land will be cleaned. But I know that there are other lands other than those belonging to the Ogonis that needs to be fixed and I am looking at that picture.

We need to put in structures that will take care of those ones and also address future slips.

And looking at a country like Nigeria where everyone is yelling tribe up and down, cleaning the lands of one tribe alone is an invitation to malice by the other tribes.

This is another sucker for Ogoni people. Ogoni does not need a political cleanup but for Bori to be transformed into cities such as Lagos/Ikeja and Abuja. Is it abominable endeavor for Bori to be upgraded to standard of Lagos or Abuja.

What the FG really need is to provide the framework and responsible leadership to prevail on the oil majors to carry out the clean ups of all others. It's all about genuine care for the people. We have had a president and several oil ministers from the ND who never really took this as a pain.
