living off the government as in no tax? is that possible...... and when there is family or marriage it reduces to what % and is it tru they pay pregnant citizens

Brother, are you advising or are you seeking for advice? Which one?

As regards the letter from your school stating your yearly expenses, I advise that you check your school webpage for information on living expenses per year. Print it out and show it to them at the bank as it will have the school logo on it (I faced this issue at Stanbic and they were fine when I showed them that, even though I eventually paid with Union Bank).

Go and translate your letter with the affidavit at a high court: this kind of thing doesn't require the whole wahala of contacting your language school.

Greetings house. Please I need help here! It's almost 2weeks since I applied for an interview appointment and I still haven't received a reply from the embassy. Is this a normal occurrence or am I missing something? I actually booked an interview appointment on July 29th, via the email written at the back of the account oppenig receipt just about few hours after applying for the famous blocked account at the German embassy in Lagos. And yes! I attached the 3 required files along with my appointment request. Guys what's your take regarding this issue? Please advise..

Check your spam folder, if there is no mail from the embassy you may need to send another mail to them ASAP.

Um well yes some people live off the government without tax. This happens when they have no job and u have responsibilities and stuff so they declare bankruptcy and ask for support from d government. But of course they stop it after a while if they see u are unwilling to work. I don't know about the pregnancy thing but I know u get 300- 450 euros from the gov when u have a child. Even if u have a job. This is a general thing for people who have kids. Whether working or bankrupt. We now pay 25-30 percent tax and in the end of the year we get some money back. It all depends individually.

Styles2009, thats totally not true. Daad doesnt show all the courses offered in Germany. For example, last time I checked, TU Clausthal Msc resevoir engineering wasnt on daad.
Fos those looking for schools, check
1. Daad
2. Tu9's website
3. Mastersportal
4. Studyineurope/scholars4dev website (dunno the correct one, try both)
5. Lastly, do a google search of your desired course. Again almost all search results would lead you back to daad.
*wink #thankMelater.

Yes a friend of mine who's nigerian (met her in the streets of wiesbaden one day) lives off the government and has been doing so for 1 year now. She had a baby in Duisburg and got child and family support from government. The child has a German birth cert but the parents are on family reunion permits in the country. They are currently making German courses so they can find jobs before the gov stops supporting them. This means that they only pay for the child and not more for the parents. It's quite complicated abeg. Lol. I don't have kids so I only know this from friends who dont have jobs and stuff

read fifty pages back you would find ur answers, i dont know why people are lazy to read previous pages, we shall call NAIJAOBI to give you akamu. Studing abroad involves a lot of reading and research if you cant start now I wonder how you would do when you reach Germo. I got my first admission last year and made silly mistakes thats why i am still here and when i stumbled about this trend less than a month ago, i had to read 480 pages of part 1 and this part so as to avoid mistakes in the future.

How much do u get? Cause I know a person who gets 300-450 euros according to her. Unless of course they re lying. Don't know much abt gov support. I don't use it. And I don't have kids.
Oh right I placed a call. She gets 360 euros for 2 kids. She has 3 children. 190 euros extra for the third kid. both parents are Nigerian.

Well the later information is a little bit correct. As a rule until the children turn 18, though it can continue until they are 25 if they are still in school. You get €184 per month for each of the first two children, €190 for the third child and €215 for each subsequent one but the amount you get is relatively not much to sustain you and your children.

I don't have kids and I'm also not German but I have integrated a little bit to know a lot about the social system. It sucks if you don't intend to spend the rest of your life here.

What do u mean it sucks if u don't intend to spend the rest of ur life? I don't get u. Well I think I might have to spend d rest of my life or move to the states in a few years if I get bored. Lol I have a German spouse so I can't escape it. But I learned that if we stayed in Nigeria we will pay only 1.5 million Naira per year as tax to Nigeria and we can keep all our money. I think we might do that in a few years to save small money abeg. Lol. To be honest it's quite a good place to raise kids cause u are always sure that no matter the case they will be taken care of. Unlike Naija where kids have to hustle through school at tender ages. It's sad...

so in all these so-called first world countries, where does one not have to pay almost half or over half of their salary as tax?
I remember my Lecturer in school complaining about the High Taxes in Canada...He was a Prof lecturing in Canada but he said he got pissed with the whole tax ish as though he was paid almost 10,000 dolls monthly, he was taxed between 50 to 60 percent of this sum. He said he was overworked yet under-paid and had to relocate back to Nigeria.

Yea...the sys is cool....often at times when I hear pple complain abt taxes and social contributions I laugh, cos the sys is designed to help tho it is a lil bit abused by some pple.

So I m gonna try to drop my 2cents before some pple get scared of the tax sys.

Income Tax: government levy imposed on individuals or entities (taxpayers) that varies with the income or profits (taxable income) of the taxpayer. This depends on ur tax class see next post for tax class.

Contributions include

Unemployment benefits:this enable workers to get 70% or so of their last income if they lose their job for a year after contributing to the system for not less than a year..of course u ve to show that u re job hunting...another criteria is that u ve to ve an open work visa.

Health insurance (15.5%). Your enployer pays abt 7.5 abd u ve to cough out the rest...The benefits re immerse world class health care and all that..you also get paid some part of ur income in the evebt of prolonged illness after 6weeks the Krankenkasse steps in and pay abt 60% of ur income for some time.

Pflegeversicherung: Insurance for sick care or so....long term care or so my limited german skills wont alow me to understand this properly.

Church Tax: a lil fraction of ur income if u re a Roman catholic or Anglican ....if u re a protestant u dont pay a dime. They get this info when u register at city council

Pension: A certian percentage of your income also goes to the pension scheme..you contribute half and ur employer pays the other half....If you decide to leave the country anytime you can apply for your pension contributions to be refunded but note that u only get the part you contributed. IF you move to another E.U country you can ask your contributions to be transferred I think there is a sys in place for that( nt so sure)

Solidarity Payment.

You can also file for tax returns ( compulsory per annum ) to claim some tax back for this u need Steuerberater or u DIY.

Benefits you get.

Aside living in a stable country with good infrastructure some benefits of workin in Germany re:

Free education for kids from nursery to uni.

Unemployment benefits if you lose ur job after contributing to the system for nt less than a year.

Kindergeld: 180 or so per child for child support.

Eltengeld: Nursing mothers and fathers can get some percentage of their income while they tend to their offspring within the first year...both parents can apply.

Good health care system.....

Pension: Steady pension..at least u dont ve to queue at Alausa and faint for that.

Access to loans, mortage and the rest although nt common single digit interest rates.

Note : You re entitled to some if u ve an open wirk visa( nt tied to an employer) you dont necessary need to be German to get most of the benefits listed above. Germany is built on social contribution..if u ve decided to reside here ve that at the back of your mind....

Students re exempted from most of the taxes stated above ..as a student you pay lil or nothing and get them back at the end of the year make una nor panic...

Tax classes in Germany

class I = single
class II = single parent (living alone with the child/children)
class III = married and spouse has no income or lower income
class IV = married and similar income to spouse
class V = opposite of class III, ie this is the class your lower earning spouse has if you have III
class VI= for a second job or for deduction without proper employee information
The taxation at source for capital income will be done with a flat tax rate of 25% (add solidarity surcharge of 5.5% of the amount of tax and, if applicable, church tax)

Source: wikipedia

Tax class 1 and 6 re nothing to write home abt...it pays to be married in Germany ..huge tax cut especially if your spouse salary is nt that high..in the case that both of you ve similar income u end up in tax class 4.

In all....Germany is a cool place

Cindino20, thanks for the heads-up. I had tried to research on the taxation scheme in Germany and compare it with what was obtainable in other 1st world countries, but it was kinda difficult to understand, so I shrugged and consoled myself that no matter how high it is, it remains 10 times better than our country called Nigeria, where it is extremely difficult to make it as a fresh graduate. Although one should place relocating back to Nigeria at a certain point in his/her life as a priority, cos there's so much money to be made in our dear country, it's just breaking the class barrier that is the problem. And once one uses the opportunity studying and working in Germany brings to elevate his/her status/class, the only way to eat the bread and drink the honey of the land is to come back to invest in it.

Well this lecturers taxes were extreme. In our case I am angry some times but when u see the benefits in Germany when u lose ur job and stuff, u will completely understand why u paid tax. Almost nobody gets unemployment support in Naija and their salaries are peanuts. Most of us are alive by the grace of God here. Lol. It's not easy in Europe. But it's safer.
