grownaira. If all you spend on charcoal is just 5k, then I'll advise you stick with it. Apart from the price of the gas brooder which is about 12k the last time I asked, you may end up exhausting a 14kg gas within 2 days. Multiply the price by the number of days your birds will need heat as generated by you. Charcoal still remains the most cost efficient, unless you have biogas facilities installed in your farm.

Thanks for the response boss. Do you have an idea of the cost of gas/electric brooders (1000 and 2000)?

We don't get good charcoal here. I spend more than 5k on charcoal for brooding each set of birds.

Gas and Electric brooder are expensive except where you've constant electricity and the scale of ur production is enough to carry the cost.

As Eggcelent said, consider the cost buying cylinders, connecting hoses and all sorts, but where you operate a large scale of production, you can go for it.

Try and research where you can get good charcoal source, its the most economical as long as it does not constitute any side effects on the birds.

Where's your farm? I can recommend good charcoal sources, possibly.

thanks twomcfemad and eggcelent. my problem with charcoal is not only the cost and the fact that the ones i do get aren't good. charcoal stoves do not seem to be effective for me. my farm is close to a small pond, and the place is naturally always cold. if gas brooder is more effective than charcoal stoves, i can go for it and utilize my poultry litter and goat litters to produce bio-gas for it.

@eggcellent, pls which colour of bulb is best for photostimulation, is it d energy saving bulb, fluorescent, or d normal yellow bulb.
..
Yellow bulb or LED. Fluorescent not too good bc the birds can see the flickering.
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by farmgate: 10:38pm On Aug 10, 2015
White bulb still the best

i support eggcelent and twomcfemad. if you spend 5k for your set of birds please continue with charcoal. my birds(2000) are 11 days today and i have spent about 9k on charchoal. so i advice you stick with charcoal. you can also try kerosene stove. its effective and less stressful though slightly higher than charcoal in terms of cost

I

Tanx Laposta. But I cudnt get enrofloxacin here. Then I do read on the sachets of some antibiotics that combining with multivitamins will counter the effect of the drug. Pls shed more light. Will streptomycin and tylosine do?

Cos its over 2weeks we have been giving them antibiotics, still no improvement.

I'm sorry about the challenge you are facing but I must confess, it appears you have overdosed them with antibiotics. Giving antibiotics for two weeks is a clear case of abuse and please do not do so again.

That being said, here are the things I believe you can do...

1.) Separate all birds that are infected from the others that look healthy.
2.) Ensure that you have enough space for your birds. Respiratory diseases thrive more when the birds don't have enough space. Please don't assume they have enough. Just increase the space they have access to if you can...
3.) If you can afford a lab test, take a few of the sick ones to the laboratory for test.
4.) Give them a break from antibiotics for at least a week while you try to look for enrofloxacin...a popular brand of enrofloxacin is Conflox.
5.) Administer according to recommended dosage. Stop administering after five days even if the symptoms of the disease does not stop.

Remember, you cannot cure a viral disease. Most respiratory diseases (including cold and cattarh in humans) are caused by viral infection. The can only be prevented through vaccination. However, once a flock is affected, the only way is to allow the birds fight off the disease themselves. However, you can help the birds manage other diseases that may want do an "attache" to the viral disease through the use of antibiotics.

Good one Manya. Meanwhile, you may wish to do something with the temperature spread. Seems to me the birds are a little clustered. When will you administer the antibiotics & which one are you using?

New cases of bird flu in Abia, Enugu – NVRI
August 11, 2015 : 0 Comments

The National Veterinary Research Institute said on Tuesday that new cases of bird flu have been discovered in Abia and Enugu States.

Executive Director of the institute, Dr. Mohammed Ahmed, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Jos on Tuesday that it was the first time the flu was found in the two eastern states.

“The last cases we stamped out in May, after destroying more than 1.4 million birds, affected only 18 states. Now the two states have come down with the disease and brought the total to 20 states,” he said.

He said the new cases had been traced to the purchase of birds in Ibadan at the “point of lay” by some poultry farmers in the two states.

“Unfortunately, the young birds came down with the disease, which means that we have not been enforcing the restriction in movement that is a key step in controlling the disease.”

While advising farmers to be more proactive, he said the purchase of birds at the point of lay was “certainly not the best,” because farmers would not know how the birds were raised.

He said purchasing of birds at the point of lay was mostly done by lazy farmers, adding that the attitude was “very dangerous, deadly and costly.”

He therefore advised farmers to always patronise well established farms that have massive hatcheries and were meticulous on biosecurity.

“The small poultry farms do not take biosecurity seriously. But the big farms have massive investments and do not play with the safety of their birds.”

The NVRI boss said the national technical committee on bird flu had suggested to the Federal Government, the establishment of an active surveillance unit and was still waiting for response.

He also spoke on the payment of compensations to owners of farms whose birds were destroyed, saying the exercise was in progress.

“The compensation has been spread into batches; batches 1, 2 and 3 have been paid. The others have been verified and payment will resume soon.

@Eggcellent, i have given them keproceryl a day after their arrival and also Vitalyte.
@Farmtech, i will give them Lasota on Monday 17th, that is when they will be a week in my farm. on 24th, i will give them Gomboro.
Thank you so much for your concern. As for the temperature spread, i have taken care of it now they don't form clusters. In fact the little birds are doing very well as of today their third day.
I welcome all suggestions from friends.
i am presently constructing a new house for broilers, 40feet by 12 feet to accommodate 500 birds. work has started today.
