OP's just being a tad touchy is all...it's good you aired this out, but it's a bit beyond us. And must everything be heaped on Seun Osewa In the event of the need to moderate viewpoints on social media, just how far do you think you're gonna get before folks start touting Censorship, Intellectual Intolerance, Media Control etc Mehn, while u might have some points, you're being way too emotional with these your rant... Infact you should tender an unreserved apology to Seun sef? Abi, him be our Lord & SAvior? An understanding of Social MEdia Universe along with extant rules of being a member of this online communities will clearly enlighten you as to how porous things are out here. Guy, you oughtta go see REddit and co. where people have threads like https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/w0a6x/my_reaction_to_finding_rkillingwomen/?ref=search_posts https://extratorrent.unblocked.pw/article/4450/reddit+banned+white+supremacist+subreddits.html and you'll know how with the dynamic world we're in right now. Sociopaths, psychopaths, pedos, crackheads, dopehead, shytheads, all coming out of the wardrobe...it aint just about the medium but the minds posting the articles.... until we have just the right type of legislation to control all these crap, don't come and be throwing out babies with our bath water here. As for the actual misogynists and other chauvisnistic seniorMuguns on the Forum, the greatest dangers most of them often do is to themselves, their relationships etc plus na everyday for the thief, one day for the owner! |

chachanga: Your comment reads like someone who has a valid point but is too drunk to make his statements coherently. Reddit doesnt move racist/sexist threads to their front page. And yes, they finally banned racist subreddits. Go figure |

AllNaijaBlogger: That's why i supplied those specific page links. All those crazy threads got banned, neat! You might have a point there....change must start somehow. Am just not for nailing Seun on every issue except on the selection criteria of the MODs themselves. Some're quite gud while some others would be puking their coffee back into their teacups with your post up there because they're the real culprits here. |

1. That analogy is very very daft. 2. Forum abides with the basic tenets of freedom and expression under law 3. The various threads listed do not necessarily represent the views of the admin. 4. The forum by definition invites all users to discuss the contents of a thread with other stakeholders and encourages debate 5. Controversial threads drive traffic. Traffic drives revenue from advertising. Revenue from advertising keeps the website online 6. Extremely daft analogy 2 Likes |

Nothing will change. Asking the admin to close down "sexist" threads springing out from the romance section is like making that section non-functional at all. Besides,,gender fight didn't start or originate from Nairaland. And it doesn't abound only in Nigeria. You can close hundreds of sexist threads on Nairaland but it won't stop misogynists from posting their mind on their twitter account,,facebook or BBM. There are so many social media platforms I see such stuff and the women are not left out of it too. What am I saying here. This is a public forum and everyone has different opinions,,regardless of how annoying it may be to another person it's still his/her opinion. If you close down sexist threads just to please women you are not pleasing the men either. I believe everyone knows the right from the wrong. So why not walk away when you see such threads. This is just a voice of a feminist speaking and nothing more. Else I see nothing really disturbing about it. And please nairalanders should learn to stop blaming sèun for the stupidity of a member. There is a place below which states "Every Nairalander is solely responsible for what he/she posts or uploads on Nairaland" 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Re: The Pandering To Anti-intellectualism On Nairaland (part 1; Misogyny) by AllNaijaBlogger(m): 8:38pm On Aug 12, 2015 |
Nihilist: As expected, you argue for arguing sake. Nothing to say about the sexist threads, abi? 1) Anyone can make sweeping statements without proof. Guy, please explain how my analogy is daft 2) Free speech and freedom of expression applies between government and its citizens and not between a private company and its customers. Every company has its code of conduct. I assume that Nairaland's code of conduct is against sexism. If you don't like the code of conduct, take your customer self elsewhere. 3) Of course, threads posted by ordinary nairalanders do not represent the views of the nairaland admin. This was made clear in the scenario that I put in the op. You need to learn how to comprehend. The problem at hand is the pushing of sexist threads to the front page- by such action, the Nairaland admin is supporting sexism. There is precedence for this- Reddit does not push racist or sexist threads to their front page despite the alarming number of racists/misogynists on Reddit. 4) Irrelevant and moot point. Inviting everyone to discuss crap does not change the fact that the discussion is crap. 5) The truth is also controversial. Feminism itself brings a lot of traffic. Controversial does not always mean "bigoted" or "sexist". For once, use your brain and see that you are pandering to the lowest of the low. Some of those sexist threads that you are supporting do not even bring as much traffic as some sensible ones have done. Your traffic argument here is silly. We aren't arguing against celebs or politics but sexism from the romance section. There are also non-sexist romance threads that gather traffic 6) Again, another sweeping comment from you with no proof or sound argument. I hope you can see that you just came here to be antagonistic. Go and sleep 1 Like |

naijaboiy: You are part of the anti-intellectual dregs of nairaland we are talking about. You just commented without even comprehending what is written in the op. First, I never said that Seun or the nairaland admin should close down sexist threads. The point here is that they should not push them to the front page. Secondly, no one is saying that Seun or the nairaland admin is responsible for what other nairalanders post on nairaland. However, the admin are responsible for what they push to the front page. Reddit does not push racist/sexist threads to their front page despite having huge subreddits for sexists and racists. And sexism goes both ways. I just complained about a misandrist thread on the front page that is liking all men to be r.apists. https://www.nairaland.com/2520057/trick-use-catching-potential-rapist 4 Likes |

AllNaijaBlogger:i'm not part of any dreg or whatever you call it. Not pushing it to front page doesn't change anything about it. There are so many sexist threads on romance section that have not seen the light of front page and I don't think they would. My point as stated before is that whether they push it or not will not change the fact that sexism will continue. People will still be sexists and they will look for other means on social media that they can be heard if they don't get the chance on Nairaland. This forum is just one out of the many platforms where we see such happening. People will still keep being feminists,,misandrists,,misogynists,,sexists and the others no matter what happens. These are concepts that have come to be part of our modern society today. And people have chosen to be where they want to belong as bad as it may be. Nairaland can do little or nothing to curb or stop it. |

I'm glad the OP is a guy. I can only imagine the nature of comments that would have flooded this place if the thread was created by a lady. The society is what it is. Guys would always come here to put ladies down just to give their bruised/ almost non existing ego a boost. My problem is with the ladies who come to support them. I'm yet to understand the rationale behind such action. If we ladies can't speak with one voice, it would be really difficult to fight this battle. 2 Likes 1 Share |
Re: The Pandering To Anti-intellectualism On Nairaland (part 1; Misogyny) by Nihilist: 9:02pm On Aug 12, 2015 |
AllNaijaBlogger: Everything you posted there is rubbish. 1. Frontpage topics are chosen for their potential to generate debate subject to Nairaland's 21 laws 2. Comments are moderated by evaluation against those 21 laws, and the more extreme ones are hidden and the posters are banned 3. There is no such thing as a 'sexist' thread or 'racist' thread. A thread is merely a vehicle to share opinions and nothing more. 4. It is not illegal to hold sexist and/or even racist views. It is only when it directly affects other people that there is a problem. Hence rules 2 and 3 exist to prevent posters from crossing the line, and punish them when they do. E.g I may hold the view that all bloggers are fools, which is fair enough, but when I say Allnaijablogger is a fool, I have crossed the line and Ishilove is usually on hand to annoy me with a ban. There's nothing intellectual about this issue. Only a very small percentage of the myriad of threads on this forum ever make frontpage, and that is because the frontpage is reserved for debatable topics whether controversial or not If you dont like it, well....... 2 Likes |

naijaboiy: You miss the point by a mile. AGAIN. The point of not pushing sexist threads to the front page is to prevent sexists from having a platform from which they can shout and spread to innocent minds. Many youths are on this forum. It would be better to expose them to more positive threads. I am not asking nairaland to reform hardened sexists In the op, I mentioned and supported the pushing of politics and celeb threads to frontpage- they might not always be educative but they drive traffic. I am not against Seun or Nairaland making money or getting traffic. Those sexist romance threads are not even guaranteed traffic. |

Nihilist: Sir, are you into B..D..S.M? 50 shades of Grey? I only ask because you seem to be an expert in torturing logic. With some mental gymnastics, you bent logic out of shape- Your first and second points are very illogical when you consider that 1) Insulting women and sexism will break rule 2 or rule 3 or rule 8, in some form 2) The criteria for Front page posts go beyond the 21 rules. For instance, old news doesnt make the front page. Your third point is so silly that I wont bother refuting it- According to Nihilist, 3. There is no such thing as a 'sexist' thread or 'racist' thread. A thread is merely a vehicle to share opinions and nothing more. Your fourth point is a strawman. No one said sexism or racism is illegal |
Re: The Pandering To Anti-intellectualism On Nairaland (part 1; Misogyny) by Nobody: 9:18pm On Aug 12, 2015 |
AllNaijaBlogger:And what makes you think such threads not being pushed to the front page can't have the same perceived effect on these said people? Some threads that don't make front page garner as much as 20 to 30 pages of pure bitter exchange from both sexes. Sexist romance thread do not gain traffic? I made a sexist comment on one and I got 46 likes? on something myself wouldn't like. The comment below mine had about 250 likes. The last time I saw that number of likes on a politics thread was during the elections. So people who are inclined to be sexist will be sexist although what it may take is just a little push. And this push may even come in the form of being jilted just one time in a relationship. 1 Like |

blublahd: Do you think it is by magic or witchcraft that Europe is more gender neutral (and woman friendly) than Africa? Is it by magic that their popular websites and forums do not support sexism? The absence of something can never be the same as the presence of that something. Pushing sexist threads to the front page will always have a worse effect than not pushing them. |

Especially in your use of the word "strawman". I used the 21 laws to set legislative and judicial context, and you're still wondering who said sexism is illegal? Boy go and sleep. |

To all those claiming "traffic" as a sensible reason for the sexist romance threads, here is a breakdown of the latest anti-intellectual threads from the romance section 1) Thread that claims women say "no" to proposal because of size of engagement ring (4 pages) https://www.nairaland.com/2520744/7-common-reasons-why-ladies 2) The reasons why ladies won't get married soon (4 pages) https://www.nairaland.com/2518688/see-reason-why-many-ladies Then here are low-IQ posts from the romance section- 3) Tricks lagos guys use to woo ladies in public transport (4 pages) https://www.nairaland.com/2521020/revealed-new-tricks-lagos-guys 4) 10 weird and shameful practices guys do when they want girlfriends (5 pages) https://www.nairaland.com/2521142/10-weird-shameful-practices-guys So, to all those claiming that it is a business decision when pushing low-IQ posts (especially sexist romance threads) to the front page, you guys are wrong. It is not guaranteed traffic. It is giving dullards a platform to misinform others. To be fair, once in a while, a foolish thread from the romance section will bring a lot of view....but only because it is annoying and divisive. For instance, this thread that has a silly view on men and rape https://www.nairaland.com/2520057/trick-use-catching-potential-rapist cc Standd Nihilist Cao Naijaboiy blublahd Seun Lalasticlala Joseph1832 Ishilove |
