OMITTED TRUTH/DEBUNKING Lies...Nigeria States And What They Produce by ikechu1278: 5:45am On Aug 13, 2015
I saw a thread titled, I believe, Nigeria states and what it produces. Considering a year ago I actually did a research paper on this exact topic, it intrigued me therefore I opened the thread and upon reading the thread, I noticed some states intentionally ommited, some states intentionally included and given higher percentage than it should and a cash crop (Round wood) that is no longer exported from Nigeria anymore due to the 1967 ban placed on it, intentionally included and what really caught my interest was the Gold production. Where I do know the states with gold in Nigeria are Abuja, Abia, Ebonyi, Edo, Kebbi, Kwara, Niger, Oyo, Sokoto and Zafara but according to the thread I spoke of somehow, someway Osun and Oyo are the gold producers of Nigeria with a minority of North sprinkled in. That peeked my interest so I decided to redo the research I did a year ago.

Round wood is no longer exported from Nigeria since this has been placed on ban since 1976. The round-wood produced in Nigeria is mainly non-coniferous hardwood. There are no authentic series on it since the 1990s’. However, the Central Bank published estimates are reported with FAO’s forecasts for comparison. It must be noted that round-wood statistics includes industrial round wood, poles and fuelwood.

The Dominant cash crops in Nigeria

It's breakdown of some of them

In terms of production
Rice: North Central produces the highest, followed by North East, North West, South East, South West and South South producing the least
Maize: North East produces the highest, followed by North Central, North West, South West, South South and South East producing the least
Sorghum: North West produces the highest, followed by North East, North Central, South West and South and South East not producing any
Yam: North Central produces the highest, followed by South South, South East, South West, North East and North West producing the least
Cassava: North Central produces the highest, followed by South South, South East, South West, North East and North West producing the same amount

CASSAVA

Cassava production

1.3.1 Cassava
In the last nine years (1999-2007), Benue State is the only state in Nigeria has reached, in terms of
cassava production, more than 3 million metric tons (see Fig. 4 below). Benue state (the “green” state
in this case) produced on the average (1999-2007) 3.57 million metric tons of cassava
. The “blue” states
including Kogi, Enugu, Imo and Cross River produced, on the average
, from 1999-2007, 2.1-3.0 metric
tons of cassava
, while 1-2 million metric tons of cassava was produced by “yellow” states including
Kaduna, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and Taraba
. The “white” states, on the other hand,
represent areas where cassava production is below 1 million metric tons
, on the average, in the last nine
years

Area under cassava cultivation

white indicates less than 50 thousand hectares
yellow indicates 50-100 thousand hectares
Blue indicates 101-150 thousand hectares
Green indicates 151-200 thousand hectares
Red indicates greater than 200 thousand hectares
Furthermore, the average cassava yields from 1999-2007 shows that only Kogi, Ekiti, Ondo and Abia
States (the “green” states) have exceeded 15 tons per hectare. Ondo State had the
highest average yield of 18.5 metric tons per hectare is this is better than the averages (1999-2007) of
the World (11.1 metric tons/ha), Africa (9.3 metric tons/ha), Americas (12.6 metric tons/ha), Asia (16.1
metric tons/ha), and Oceania (11.2 metric tons/ha).
YAM

Yam production

Yam is grown in many states of the Federation. In the past nine year, however, only Niger State (the
‘green’ state) has produced on the average above 3,000 metric tons of Yam
. The ‘blue’ states including
Benue, Enugu and Taraba have each produced on the average between 2001-3000 metric tons of yam
(see Fig. 16 below)
. The ‘yellow’ states including Kaduna, Nassarawa, Kogi, Ondo, and Cross River
produced on the average between 1000-2000 metric tons
respectively, while the remaining ‘white’
states each produced less than 1000 metric tons in the last nine years
.

Areas under Yam Cultivation

Red indicates over 200 thousand hectares of land, on the average, to yam production
Green indicates between 151-200 thousand hectares of land, on the average to yam cultivation
Yellow indicates 50-100 thousand hectares of land under yam cultivation
Blue indicates average between 101-150 thousand hectares of yam land
White indicates less than 50 thousand hectares of yam land

When compared with other world regional yield averages (1999-2007), Abia State’s yam average yield
(15.7 mt/ha) is better than those of the world (10.4 mt/ha), Africa (10.4 mt/ha), Asia (15.2 mt/ha) and
the Americas (8.8 mt/ha), but equal to that of Oceania (15.7 mt/ha) and worse than Europe (16.3
mt/ha).

SORGHUM

sorghum production

Sorghum is mostly produced in the Northeast, Northwest and North central regions of Nigeria. Only
Borno State (the “green” state in this case) produced greater than 600 thousand metric tons of sorghum
on the average in the last nine years (see Fig. 10 below). Kano, Kaduna, Niger and Zamfara States (the
“blue” states) each produced on the average between 401-600 thousand metric tons,
while the average
sorghum production in each of the “yellow” states (including Katsina and Bauchi) is between 200-400
metric tons
. As can also be seen in Fig. 10, several other “white” states each produced less than 200
metric tons of sorghum from 1999-2007
.

Areas for sorghum cultivation

white indicates less than 50 thousand hectares
yellow indicates 50-100 thousand hectares
Blue indicates 101-150 thousand hectares
Green indicates 151-200 thousand hectares
Red indicates greater than 200 thousand hectares

Kaduna State recorded the highest average yield of 1.9 metric tons/ha. This is certainly better than the
averages of the World (1.4 metric tons/ha), Africa (0.9 metric tons/ha), and Asia (1.0 metric
tons/ha). However, it is less than the averages of Americas (3.4 metric tons/ha), Europe (3.9 metric
tons/ha) and Oceania (2.6 metric tons/ha).

RICE

Rice production

Data show that rice is produced in almost every state of Nigeria, but most of these states (the “white”
states in this case) in the last nine years (1999-2007) each produced below 200 thousand metric tons on
the average
(see Fig. 13 below). The “yellow” states including Taraba and Benue produced between 200-
400 thousand metric tons each
, while the only “blue” state, Niger State, produced between 401-600
thousand metric tons of rice, on the average
, in the last nine years. No state produced more than 600
thousand metric tons within the same period.

Areas

white indicates less than 50 thousand hectares
yellow indicates 50-100 thousand hectares
Blue indicates 101-150 thousand hectares
Green indicates 151-200 thousand hectares
Red indicates greater than 200 thousand hectares

Ebonyi State recorded the highest average yield of 2.9 metric tons/ha and this is better than the Africa
average of 2.3 metric tons/ha. However, it is less impressive of the averages (1999-2007) of the World
(4.0 metric tons/ha), Americas (4.5 metric tons/ha), Asia (4.1 metric tons/ha), Europe (5.7 metric
tons/ha), and Oceania (8.0 metric tons/ha).

MAIZE

Maize production

Maize, an important cereal in Nigeria, is produced in all the states of the Federation. Though an all-
ecology crop in Nigeria, most states (the “white” states in this case) each produced less than 200
thousand metric tons on the average
from 1999-2007 (see Fig. 7 below). The six “yellow” states
including Borno, Plateau, Taraba, Kogi, Oyo and Ogun produced between 200-400 thousand metric tons
each
, while Niger State (the “blue” state) produced between 401-600 thousand metric tons in the same
period. Kaduna State is the only “green” state in this case producing more than 600 thousand metric
tons, on the average, in the last nine years.

Areas for Maize cultivation

white indicates less than 50 thousand hectares
yellow indicates 50-00 thousand hectares
Blue indicates 101-150 thousand hectares
Green indicates 151-200 thousand hectares
Red indicates 200 thousand hectares

Imo State recorded the highest average yield of 2.2 metric tons/ha and this is better than the Africa
average of 1.7 metric tons/ha. However, it is less than the averages (1999-2007) of the World (4.6 metric
tons/ha), Americas (6.2 metric tons/ha), Asia (4.0 metric tons/ha), Europe (5.5 metric tons/ha) and
Oceania (6.3 metric tons/ha).

PALM OIL

Palm trees grow up in wet rain forests and in savannah, which means that 24 states, mainly in the South east and central zones, produce palm oil. The North central zones produce palm fruits only incidentally. The 9 states situated in the Niger Delta (Figure 4) account for 57% of the national production (PIND, 2011).

China, for example, dominates sweet potato production accounting for more than 90% of global production, [b]whereas Nigeria is the major producer of yams. Nigeria (No. 3) and is also among the top five cassava growing countries which includes Brazil (No. 1), Thailand (No. 2), Zaire (No. 4) and Indonesia (No. 5).

This looks more factual. I hope in the near future we will be able to list states according to how much they actually make from the resources they have. Right now, everyone seems to be beggars who go to ask rock to beg for alms. Begging should be banned in Aso rock.

A little of history I read while doing this research. something that caught my interest and I feel needed to be shown (sidenote: yes it is another debunking myth)

The principal mineral occurrences discovered by the survey teams included lignite deposits at Asaba, lead-zinc ores at several locations, tin and columbite in the south-east, monazite, limestone and lead-zinc ores at Abakaliki district.

Others were coal at Enugu, brine springs at Arufu and Awe, Galena in Jos area, iron ore deposits in Niger and Kwara districts and marble deposits in Jakura. Mining activity in controlled form, however, commenced in the country in 1915 with the production of coal at the Enugu mines.

Prior to the discovery of petroleum, Nigeria was impressively sustained by agriculture and few solid minerals known at the time, namely coal, tin, columbite and gold. Coal, for example, met fully the needs of our railway system and electricity supply while tin yielded substantial foreign exchange earnings for the nation.

In addition, these minerals also offered employment opportunities. The downturn in the economy and the introduction of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) necessitated a review of Government thinking. The result is the crystallisation of the concept of diversification of activities, and the promotion of privatization and commercialization.

In other words it was agriculture, Coal, Tin, Columbite and Gold was what sustained the country prior to the discovery of Oil meaning North, south south and south east were the regions that sustained the country before everything fell on south south's shoulder
http://www.nigerianstat.gov.ng/sectorstat/sectors/Minning%20and%20Quarrying%20%28Solid%20Minerals%29

I don't know about anyone else but I found that intriguing.

Here is a thread I did on Nigerian farms owned by poli thiefs. I was wondering how much IGR is created with the crops. It's utterly unbelievable that the North is so crop wealthy but the infrastructure is dilapidated and the majority of the population is poverty stricken.

Immediately after independence Nigeria was practicing regional government with each region sustaining itself.

History and physical evidence show that way back in the 60's the estern region was not ,making enough money to implement a simple programme as simple as free education for its cicitzen. This is the major reason majority of educated igbos were educated in Ibadan in south west Nigeria. Name them, they mostly schooled in Ibadan.

This is PAT UTOMI a renouned Igbo economist has to say recently following an article by Charles soludo on the APC social programmes included on the manifesto:

Here in Nigeria, shortly after self government, in the 1950’s, Nnamdi Azikiwe as Premier of Eastern Region was anxious to match the free education policy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Palm Produce did not fetch as much as Cocoa in the Market. The civil servants led by the new Permanent Secretary in Finance, Chief Jerome Udoji thought it could not be done because of limitations of money. Zik insisted and accused Udoji, in Parliament, of trying to sabotage his government.

After 40 percent of the Eastern Nigeria budget of 1957 had gone to education and was still inadequate, the Ugoji team suggested the introduction of fees for Primary 1 and Primary 5. But leadership kicked in. A philosophy called “Ibu anyi danda” raised a formula that created a partnership between government, the communities and missionaries that enabled the East leapfrog the gap in education between the East and West.

I want you to correct the statement above on existence of Gold in Osogbo, Osun State.

There is gold in Osogbo which is mined illegally as we speak notwithstanding the arrangement made by Gov. Aregbesola with Australian company in June, 2014 which is yet to move to site.

OSOGBO—All is now set for the mining of the first gold in Ilesha, in the State of Osun as the Governor Rauf Aregbesola, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an Australian mining firm, Andalusian Mining Industry.

This came as the leader of the mining firm, Colin Miller, told the governor that his company would present the first raw gold to the people of the state before the end this year.

The signing ceremony took place at the Government House, Osogbo yesterday with a moderate ceremony with the governor in attendance.

The governor said the Australian mining firm had conducted a geological survey which confirmed that there was a huge deposit of gold in Ilesha.

Aregbesola said the discovery had presented the state with a wonderful opportunity to partner with Andalusian in the breakdown, exploration and mining of gold in the state.

He said the people and the state look forward to having maximum advantage of the mining firm’s presence in the state
The governor described gold mining in state as a major breakthrough to the government and a business opportunity for the state.

He said the government looked forward to speedy operation and intervention in the prospecting for gold before the end of the year.

The governor expressed hope that the state has joined the league of mining of non-oil mineral producing states in the country.

A little of history I read while doing this research. something that caught my interest and I feel needed to be shown (sidenote: yes it is another debunking myth)

In other words it was agriculture, Coal, Tin, Columbite and Gold was what sustained the country prior to the discovery of Oil meaning North, south south and south east were the regions that sustained the country before everything fell on south south's shoulder
