I think 260 is a tad overwhelming. Some are repetitions. I think whittling it down to a number that people can learn quickly and actually begin to use is better. Some people that come into this thread are not even going to read the 260 what more learn them scholti: |

Wow I love this & I am definitely going to copy and save it for future reference. Plz keep them coming because they will be very useful in helping us build a modern Igbo society with our own language just like the rest of the developed world. 1 Like |

Phut:And he should always remember that in Igbo, the /m/ sound only comes before the /b,p,f,v/ sounds and the /gb,kp/ diphthongs. I don't know why many make that mistake |

Phut: I got the list from this site: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/wordlist/transportation.shtml. Not having acquaintance with all of them, I thought the extra-qualifiers were subtleties/differentiations of vehicle identification; but I would extract the ones that people are most used to like, vans, lorries etc, and make a new list. |

Good job Scholti. Your list is looking better and better scholti: Why did you remove Stock car: Ugbo nkiti? Clunker/jalopy Ugbo nkiti You previously had tire as Ogi. Is this word already in use? What is the etymology and why did you remove it from subsequent lists? Cc: ihuomadinihu Radoillo Odumchi Odensibiri ChinenyeN Odenigboarolli |
Re: 258 Vehicle And Aircraft Types Translated Into Igbo (umu Ugbo gazie) by scholti: 3:43am On Aug 13, 2015 |
Phut: 1. I came up with 'nzammiri' to introduce some variety rather than sticking to the oft-spoken 'ugbommiri', when there are subtleties amongst various watercrafts; although as a generic term, Ugbommiri works. Nzammiri (nza (craft) + mmiri (water)), means watercraft. 2. I have known 'ugbooloko' for a while. I don't know its etymology. 3. I have heard people use 'ugboepeepe', I am not sure of the meaning of 'epeepe'. 4. For van, I was thinking of a small, errand-oriented type of vehicle, hence my chioce of 'ugboozi'. (https://www.renault.co.uk/vehicles/new-vehicles.html); while Buses put me in mind of public transport, hence my choice of 'ugboọha' (transport for the public). (http://www.open.ac.uk/about/estates/travel-advice/bus-services@ 5. Train and railway can be ugboloko or okporoigwe. 6. I have heard the word 'ataba' used a number of times but a word like 'oar' would have different words. 7. 'Njem ọsọ/ọsisọ', would be perfect for 'rapid transit'. 8. 'Ugbo omimi' to my mind captures the depths of a submersible/submarine. 9. Yep Ugbonkpọje (or ugboego). 10. I felt that 'stock cars' were not common enough as I wanted a list anyone can look at and extract words for daily use. There is still much good in the first list. 11. 'Ugbo nkiti' defines the nothingness of a clunker or jalopy. I would define 'stock cars' as 'Ugboasompi', as the vehicles are used for races. 12. I have heard the word 'ogi' used a number of times; my guess is that it sprang out of a variety of influences. My mind was focused on vehicles, I left out the poor little tires. |
Re: 258 Vehicle And Aircraft Types Translated Into Igbo (umu Ugbo gazie) by Phut(f): 5:30am On Aug 13, 2015 |
Nkiti means one of a kind/unique. It does not mean nothingness. Nkirika means raggedy. I feel that is where the word okirika (for 2nd hand clothes comes from). So nkirika may apply to a jalopy or clunker. I still feel your thread about prefixes and suffixes was a good idea. You just have to get more people on board and get the collaboration going |
Re: 258 Vehicle And Aircraft Types Translated Into Igbo (umu Ugbo gazie) by scholti: 10:35am On Aug 14, 2015 |
Phut: One strain of the usage of the word 'nkiti' means nothing or bare. Sample these sentences, 'awo anaghi agba oso ehihie na nkiti', ' Ma o bu onye agha ma o bu nwoke nkiti.' All its facets can co-habit. Yes it was, the prefixes and suffixes. I have been doing researches about Igbo groups to send them to. |
Re: 258 Vehicle And Aircraft Types Translated Into Igbo (umu Ugbo gazie) by scholti: 10:07pm On Aug 16, 2015 |
I have just edited the lists at no. 1 and 9, to reflect corrections, for example I have changed ugboulọ (camper) to ugboezi. Use the first list for a more expansive list (258 items) of vehicles and aircrafts, while, no.9 (64 items) for a truncated list - for everyday usage. I have also added two new words I missed in the first list (limousine - ugboaku; Segway - Ugboọkpa). |
Re: 258 Vehicle And Aircraft Types Translated Into Igbo (umu Ugbo gazie) by Phut(f): 11:30pm On Aug 16, 2015 |
scholti:Ugboulo is a better word for camper because it's a vehicle in which you can live. Ezi doesn't do it since most of not all vehicles operate na Ezi. Ugbo mgbati (which I believe u used before) is better for Limo's. Ugboak u is too vague since any expensive vehicle could fit that bill |
Re: 258 Vehicle And Aircraft Types Translated Into Igbo (umu Ugbo gazie) by scholti: 6:39am On Aug 17, 2015 |
Phut: I already have ugboulo down for caravan. I never gave limousine a name. |
Re: 258 Vehicle And Aircraft Types Translated Into Igbo (umu Ugbo gazie) by Phut(f): 8:25am On Aug 17, 2015 |
scholti: Well then caravan and camper should have the same name. They are similar enough. If only one gets to keep it, it should be camper/mobile home, a word/phrase which is more likely to occur in modern speech, than caravan |
