Why use Win 8.1 wen you can upgrade to Windows 10?? Windows 10 comes with windows Defender. And its far better than 8.1

Windows Defender does just fine and its effective to an extent. But if you truely want the best then upgrade to Bitdefender. it's the best antivirus in planet earth for now. any other one apart from this two only gives your system aches.

Windows is the most attacked OS in the world because of its popularity and market share.
I believe no matter how secure Microsoft makes it, some hackers will still find a way to penetrate with viruses, worm, etc.

I feel one can never be too safe. So I always use an antivirus. I have used many different free antivirus programs, but for the past 3 years, I've stuck with Norton 360 (paid), and I'll keep using it when I upgrade to Windows 10.

Most Viruses are designed for the windows OS being the most popular os, so you should get an anti virus. There is no such thing as an OS that is immune to viruses. its just a question someone deigning one. A computer virus is essentially a software application designed or written with malicious intent. it is just the popularity of Windows that makes it a target most times.

is windows defender free to update or one has to pay? I didn't even know I had one until I installed avast which promptly told me there was an antivirus on my PC.

If there is windows defender, why did they allow Norton along with it?

Windows 8.1 comes with windows defender BUT it can't protect your system from virus threats while browsing because it doesn't have live scanning. That means it doesn't scan your browser content while you are browsing.

Windows defender is a good 1st line defense but it can't match major Anti virus products because of its less features.

It cannot protect against new malwares, Trojans, worms, phishing attacks, keygens, spywares, ad-wares etc.

Use defender ONLY if you are IT savvy and aware of your browsing habit.

Otherwise download a free product like AVG free.
