Not a very good idea, I would keep Windows Defender active lol. Anti-Virus SHOULD NOT be slowing down your system too much unless if you are using a really old computer with less than 2 gigs of RAM.

If its windows defender you are using, it doesn't need activation. all you have to do is turn it on and it can only be done by uninstalling any other anti-virus software that is installed...

I can't turn it on nor even access it. I don't have any antivirus installed, its a new tablet. The button to turn it on is not click able. And the group policy that windows 8.1 ask me to edit to enable defender doesn't exist.

Windows 8.X and Windows 10 are indeed more secure than previous iterations of Windows. However, every O.S. is prone to malware. If you like freeware, I would go with Malwarebytes. Windows Defender however should be good for most people.

Your system need deliverance. If you believe your PC is secured without any antivirus or window defender, I can give you some website to visit.

Not everyone has had the opportunity to "upgrade" to Windows 10 yet. Microsoft is rolling the update out slowly.

Windows 8.1 already comes with an anti-virus but installing another one won't hurt

upgrade to Windows 10 and then use antivirus,I use avast.

Most times though, you need an anti-malware software in addition to that...Good thing is Malwarebytes is free from Microsoft; at least the basic (non-premium) edition.

Windows 8.1 comes with windows defender BUT it can't protect your system from virus threats while browsing because it doesn't have live scanning. That means it doesn't scan your browser content while you are browsing.

Windows defender is a good 1st line defense but it can't match major Anti virus products because of its less features.

It cannot protect against new malwares, Trojans, worms, phishing attacks, keygens, spywares, ad-wares etc.

Use defender ONLY if you are IT savvy and aware of your browsing habit.

Otherwise download a free product like AVG free.

How about d licensed versions of Bit defender, Norton, or Armor, if u were to be asked to pick one for a widows 8.1 OS home desktop used by people with crazy browsing history including young punks visiting porn sites, which would u pick?.

The virus industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. No operating system is immune from viruses. Infact, from behind the anti-virus companies design the viruses. And to the guy that said 'except you are on Unix', it just doesn't make business sense to design viruses for unix/ Linus. How many people use them? Viruses are designed to make money, steal information or make life unbearable for you.

is windows defender free to update or one has to pay? I didn't even know I had one until I installed avast which promptly told me there was an antivirus on my PC.

Norton on your PC is, I think, from the manufacturer of your system. Windows Defender will only prompt when there is no anti-virus on your system. As long as there is one, Defender remains silent. Update is free, it usually comes with the regular windows update.

Detecting sarcasm over text is quite hard, its the way you say things orally that enhances the quality of the sarcasm, but I picked it up though because windows is anything but virus free.
