arinze151:Are you sure? Yoruba should not be upto 2 million. How can. I think it should be about 1.8 or 1.9 million. Although entirely non existent in the east but they have a little male drop out rate among males though still highest male enrollment in Nig. |

alcmene: Almajiri schools were a good idea....until you come to the funding sustenance issues. And let's be honest.....most kids do not go to school up North because Nigeria...being a resource dependent economy....has not made it profitable to go to school. The North has high poverty levels....so why should papa spend kudi on pikin wey no go get job once him graduate? Meanwhile...his mates who dropped out in pry 2 are making money from farming grains....which they sell to the South. |

BishopMagic: Hmmmmmmm, so based on this one can come to the conclusion that the most educated ppl come from the South South, followed by the South West....................THEN WHY THE HELL HAVE THE LEADERS ALWAYS COME FROM THE LEAST EDUCATED REGIONS!!!!!!!!! |

BishopMagic: It isn't much better in the South. I lived in the South East for some time(Kopa)....and I can tell you the state of rural schools in the South East is bad.....very bad. As an example. 1)I once bought a simple novel for a young 14 year old village lad(and patient)...something like Eze goes to school. Guess what...the lad could not read the book...despite being in JSS2. 2.)Many of the schools in the villages were poorly equipped...and some were even opposite the houses of rich men.(Sigh). 3.)One columnist who served in the SE once wrote an article where she said at her school....it was the corpers alone who were the teachers. State teachers were absent , or not around. The North may have it worse....but the South East, South South and South West have it bad too. We have a crisis in our rural schools....especially as funding and so on has fallen. We too need work done. 1 Like |

Nairaland, thank you for having this on the home page. It is really pathetic that the largest economy in Africa has the worst case of children out of school in the world and majority of them are girls from poor families in rural Nigeria. Nigerians Report Online has been leading the vanguard for the education of all girls in Nigeria no matter the circumstances of their birth. Because no child asked to be born to poor parents. The best we can do is to give them access to education wherever they may be. That is why we support Girl Rising of 10x10 USA, Girl Up of the United Nations, The Malala Fund and our own Girls United Together for Success (GUTS) project since 2013 to date. In 2013, Nigerians Report Online successfully organized the Nigerian premiere of the groundbreaking CNN/10x10/Intel film "Girl Rising" to celebrate the United Nations' International Day of the Girl Child in Nigeria with the support of Hafsat Abiola-Costello of KIND - Kudirat Initiative For Democracy; Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, President of Women Arise for Change Initiative; Nollywood diva and Kate Henshaw and others co-hosting the event on October 11, 2013. The United Nations, Zonta International, KIND, Nigerians Report Online, Kiddies & Brands Company, Deputy British High Commission, Silverbird Group, Cool 96.9 FM, MTN Foundation and Intel co-sponsored the premiere at the Silverbird Cinemas, Silverbird Galleria on Victoria Island, Lagos with more than 420 people filling two cinema halls. Then, the following day, on October 12, 2013, we hosted Mrs. Holly Gordon, the Executive Director of 10x10 and Co-Executive Producer of "Girl Rising" to speak to NGOs on the humanitarian emergency of the education of poor girls in Africa's most populous country. See the full report on https://www.nairaland.com/1474592/hafsat-abiola-joe-odumakin-kate The success of the Nigerian premiere led to the establishment of Girl Rising Nigeria and Girl Rising Ambassadors in Nigeria In 2014, Nigerians Report Online launched the Girls United Together for Success (GUTS) project to promote girl child education in Nigeria and appointed Miss Franca Aide, a Girl Rising Ambassador as the National Coordinator. GUTS is the only Nigerian project on the world map of UNICEF's official website for 2015 The State of the World’s Children to mark the 25th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child, highlighting the work of remarkable young innovators who are already re-imagining the future – and invites the world to join this rising movement to advance the rights of every child. http://sowc2015.unicef.org/map/

Whynotthetruth: I have told you the truth.....and the fact is that having kids in school does not mean literacy levels are done and dusted. You know...the problem with education in Nigeria is not funding and numbers....it is how those two can be sustained. It is also about making education meaningful for the kids in school....not focusing on producing the next generation of clerks. I am telling you this....so that even as you laugh at the Northern illiterates.....let's do something about the educated illiterates at home. And of course...I also lived up North....and I know all about how bad it is there education wise. I also know that it is far more than just Boko. Poverty et al plays a role. And this govt has to solve the problem. P.S...And you are generalising too you know. |

bushdoc9919: Why dodge my questions...Since you're saying the truth, kindly provide answers to them all... 1)Did you say you served in all of SE village schools? 2)What are their names and locations? 3)What time did you use to run through them all so as to have ascertained their true state? 4)Which year did you serve there? BTW I never did generalise in my statement...provide answers and quit rhetorics plz 3 Likes |

As we can see from the low numbers of comments and views on this very important matter on the future of Nigeria that majority of Nigerians are intellectually re-tarded. But a thread on a useless post on the cleavage of a female celebrity or the latest makeup photo will attract dozens of thousands of views and scores of comments of no intellectual benefit to them. Nairaland should have given the topic a controversial title as "Where Are The Malalas of Nigeria" and then add the report on the alarming figures of Nigerian children out of school.
