Message to All Yoruba People on the
Ownership of Lagos.
By... Edwin Uko Philip
ON THE OWNERSHIP OF LAGOS! Lagos is a
Portuguese name meaning lagoon, the
name became needful when the invaders
saw that the place was similar to the Lagos
in their country, with reference to it
topography.(confirm from the map of
Portugal) Lagos originally called EKO a word
meaning 'war camp' in the Edo language,
showing that the territory was owned and
administered by the Oba of Benin. The
battle for the soul of Lagos began towards
the end of the 19th century and was fully
actualised in the 1900s,
when England abandoned the slave trade
following the industrial revolution. The
overthronment of Oba Akitoye by king
Kosoko and the returned of Akitoye
through the help of Britain and his
subsequent dead, his successor chief
Dosumu lack of strong will to effect the stop
of the slave after it was outlawed, paved
way for the full take over the territory by
the British, as a port town, it serves
England's interest. Typical of all port cities
be it Liver pool or Miami it is bound to be
cosmopolitan, with people everywhere
converging for business.
Of all the people that have ever governed
Lagos non originally is from the place,
Jakande-Kwara, Tinubu-Osun, Fashola-Ekiti,
Ambode-Ondo, Oba of Lagos-Ogun. The
dominance of the Yoruba people in the city
is a matter of proximity and no other, the
word 'EKO' been the original name of the
place has no meaning in the yoruba
language and the nearest in sound to the
word is 'OKO' meaning 'cassava farm' now
if the place was a swamp how then do you
plant cassava there?
Which suggest a missing link, who owns the
place should give the name. The current
native and immigrant war, currently on
going in the city state and targeting at non
Yoruba is a misplaced priority and the
archives should be visited and should be
traced down to the reign of Oba ORHOGBUA
the foremost ruler of the ancient Benin
kingdom,
otherwise the debate will be on ending and
the fight will amount to seating history on it
head. 5 Likes 1 Share |

zuchyblink: The matter can be resolved simply by asking who owns the land? The ruler is not necessarily the owner of the land. History attests to this. If you go in archives you will see where Dosunmu declared in the Treaty of Lagos Colony that he does not own the land and all matters on land treaties need approval of the Idejo Chiefs. As many times England approached to buy the land from him he deflected them to the Awori Chiefs. From 1860 to 1960 England ended up leasing land, rather than owning them. The Awori Chiefs refused to sell land. It is written also into the Customary Laws of Lagos that the lands in Lagos Island is owned by Idejo Chiefs. People from the Eastern part of Nigeria have a mortal envy of Yoruba ownership and claim on Lagos. The repetition that Oba of Lagos is from Bini or that Eko is Bini word does nothing to make Lagos a "no man's land"..... You will need to prove that the land owners, the Awori Barons, themselves are non-Yorubas or their root is from Enugu and not Ile Ife. If you can successfully dothat then you can settle once and for all the argument over status of Lagos. Good luck! 9 Likes 2 Shares |

We can change the name.of Lagos State to Olofin State to reflect the history and rights of origin. All it takes is a Government gazzette, and that will be it, and there is nothing any Ibo can do to stop that. ...but why do we even need to? A political five percenter is an irrelevant voice and does not dictate policy for us. 3 Likes |

Benin never conquered any tribe in Lagos, there were only Ijebu and Awori Yoruba in Lagos and were never conquered by any outside forces. If anything, the reverse is the case, as you will never see an Edo town or settlement in Yorubaland, but there are Yoruba speaking towns in Edo. Edo bear Yoruba name, no Yoruba bear Edo names. Only the conquered adopt not the other way. Yoruba is bigger and better with language, culture and religion that is recognized all over the world, Benin doesn't come close, so Benin or Edo is not on the same level with Yoruba, if anything they could only have been a lost Yoruba subgroup. As for Lagos, only Yoruba have claims to it and that includes Yoruba people of Edo. Others can only drool and wish. AlPeter: 2 Likes 1 Share |

Ibos are not even 5%, they are just opportunists who try to cash in on anything to make everything their own. I can bet anything that Buhari didn't have them in mind when he made that comment, but see how they have managed to wedge themselves in the middle of that, very pathetic attention seeking irritants. Who doesn't know that Ibos didn't give Buhari 5% during the elections? Who didn't know that there are some states that actually gave Buhari 5%? So how did Ibos become the 5% when it doesn't apply to them? How did 0.1% become 5% OPCNAIRALAND: 2 Likes 1 Share |

meforyou1:They Initially settled at Ile-olofin (now Isheri) olofin meaning the same as ALAFIN. before they dispersed to different parts of Lagos. The name they gave to Lagos Island is ISALE OKO. as it was seen as a farming settlement. Lagos Island was called so when the First son of Ogunfunminire migrated further south to Ebute-Metta. and they used Lagos Island as their farming settlement. ISALE OKO means the farm further south. wonder why the palace of the the Oba of Lagos is called IGA-IGUDARAN? IGA means palace while IGUDARAN means pepper farm. IGA-IGUDARAN means PALACE BUILT ON PEPPER FARM. It is also worthy to note that the Aworis don't lay claim to all parts of Lagos state, the Ogus (Eguns), Ijebus and Egbas were also leaving in Lagos long before the Portuguese set foot on Lagos soil. The Oba of Lagos original domain was Lagos Island and he was in no way superior to the his other brothers who was are now the Idejo chiefs. The first son of Ogunfunmiire has his palace at Isale-oko and he was a mediator when quarrels break out among his brothers overtime his influence grew and he was seen especially by the Europeans that the Oba of Lagos was the commanding king of all the Land holding families of Lagos. The Oba of Lagos is not regarded as a first class king in Yorubaland, his status is not higher than Oba Akran of Badagry, each administer his domain but the Oba of Lagos happen to rule over the most Economically important part of Lagos. The Island I stay belongs to the Onisiwo family and Oba Onisiwo has his palace on Lagos Island. All the "omo onilu" herer are all related to the king of Lagos. Most of them have their family houses in Lagos same as most Land owning Awori families. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Tell me the name of your hometown and what it means in your language please. Eko means Eko and it's a Yoruba word. I don't know about Benin empire and even if it ever existed, but I know no empire in the area known as Nigeria today was more powerful than that of Oyo. Our Oduduwa is not their prince and couldn't have been. Oduduwa was a Yoruba man. Let them keep looking for their missing prince, who knows, they may still find him. The only undisputed link between Yoruba and Benin is we sent our Son to go and rule over them as the first Oba, that shows who was the boss, and that's good enough for me. AlPeter: |

Iddiot, come out yourself if you have something to say since you don't know your history, but rely on others to tell you. Benin empire is a myth, there's no way a once powerful empire could just go down with nothing to show for it today. Benin a mini "empire" could have had some power among the surrounding hamlets, And flexed among their half human neighbors back then, but not on the same level as that of Oyo. Vicotex: |
