Immortalz: Beautiful sunday to everyone in tha house. I actually need a little clarification as to some concepts bothering me as far as teaching is concerned. 1. What is the difference between a school with british based curriculum and nigerian curriculum? (once taught in a school that claimed to be a british based curriculum but saw no difference as compared with other regular schools around) 2. The folkowing attachments to school names such as '"comprehensive college, high school, int'l sch, etc." Do they have any relevance as to how the school operates or its just a figure head title? 3. The general advice on this thread is to search for schools around one's localty, don't you think moving out of one's comfort zone might actually propel huge success? 4. For an individual with degree in education, which should be the next, masters in edu or professional exams. I appreciate your opinion...always ready to learn till the last breath. As regards to working outside one's comfort zone, I am a strong advocate of that...I believe while working far from your base, you tends to meet different people with different orientation... When I was teaching in kano state, the orientation of the students I met there is quite different from students down here in Lagos.. If you have the intentions to lecture someday in a higher institution, I will advice you to go for your Masters... 4 Likes 1 Share |

Sunnypar:
1. There is no difference the only difference I see is that the former prepares students for education outside Nigeria or provide educationspecifically tailored to enable students "enroll" for foreign educational institutions seamlessly, while the later prepares you for O'level and possibly acquiring knowledge not relevant to the immediate economic and cultural environment; 2. As for International schools, yes, but not all because there is AISIEN a body or association of international schools with foreign affiliation or partnership. Many schools that bears international, there nothing international about (pay wise, laboratory wise and working conditions) them not the mention they are not members of AISIEN. Some high schools are members of AISIEN but many are 'Kereje'. Comprehensive, high, low are just figure head title. 3. For someone without any teaching experience, starting around is the best, then after a year you can move out because you have gathered experience. Yours truly did same. MAcjc, made some analysis, which in my own opinion is correct especially if you want to further your studies, acquire certifications. Also schools around is good for pregnant and nursing mothers but not good for singles. Yes, leaving your comfort zone is good, but you have to consider many factors such as transportation especially in Lagos and rent. Am guessing, you not in the labour market yet. 4. It all depends on you, especially if your pocket can carry it. Professional certification is what most of this grade A schools like, however, some of "us"only have a first degree and have taught in grade A schools. In my own opinion, certifications in this profession are as follows TRCN, CIE, IELT and IGCSE. TRCN is quite good for educationists while others are gotten if the schools is certified by British council to undertake such programmes.

rezzy: @Macjc.
It's true ooo.
A friend of mine said sometimes he will miss his two lessons because of unproductive meeting here and there. And once you miss a day, it will be difficult for you to make up for that day because the child is always occupy with other teachers.
When I was at Lekki, once there is meeting teachers will begin to frown their faces like this people don start with their useless meeting.
This issue of everyday meeting is mostly done on the island whether big school or not.
Some thing I like about teaching in all these big schools is connection. My brother in law works in Lekki and had the opportunity to teach Oduah's children [former minister of aviation]. His pay was 100k and above, depending on how he came in a month. Though it was stressful because the traffic from Lekki to VGC was something else. But he made his dou, rented a flat, got married , bought a car in less than 2 years in teaching in Lekki.
On point! Rezzy, on point! There's a kind of "transfer fee" + other "condiments" that'll make ur heart skip 7 beats like in ur friend's case. Good 4 him. Fortunately, he doesn't fall into d 1st category (ie case 1) in d sense dt: (a) His abode - VGC is in d SAME ZONE AS LEKKI as compared to SANGO~LEKKI in my last illustration; walahi, dem no be mate at-all!!! (b) He has d (i) TIME and (ii) CHANCE/OPPORTUNITY of doing PRIVATE TUTORIALS!!! So, he doesn't fall into case 1 at all. He is exempted. The major issue is: will ur school activities give u allowance 2 do ur own runz by d side as in d case of ur friend (without affecting ur legal duties of course)? If the answer is NO, then he/she FALLS PERFECTLY into d 1st category. Shikena! U'll notice dt ur gee was able 2 achieve all he had achieved because he HAD (EXTRA TIME) TO DO HIS OWN RUNZ! That is how important it is 2 have some time 4 urself 4 PRIVATE TUTORIALS. What private tutorials is to an average teacher is what allowances are to our senators/reps. Your salary is just what it is - BASIC SALARY. The extras from ur RUNZ is d "koko"! (in as much as its not detrimental to d school) CONCLUSION: Again, let's ensure we look at d broader pix. Let's not be carried away by d gross pay but let's focus on d net pay, ie, let's put other factors in2 consideration. Thanks 5 Likes |

Macjc ocool nitane25 talk2yommex2000 avalontony Evathyst 1. Don't know much about primary school but for secondary schools that uses British curriculum must be doing checkpoint at the junior level and IGCSE at the senior level thereby having basic 7-11(5 years in secondary school) while Nigeria based curriculum is 6 years, British curriculum is narrow and application based while Nigeria curriculum is wide and knowledge based. 2. Not really how a school operates boils down to their content, quality and system. The name does not have so much impact. 3. Of course that's why i used to advise peeps to take it further outside their zone. 4. Masters is good most especially for schools running the Nigerian curriculum but if you truly want to go international which is trending in schools now for British and American based curriculum go for certification like IGCSE and the rest. hope this answers your questions. 1 Like |

artisticallyart: Teaching Job Is Now Hot Cake In Nigeria(My Experience). by akubudejud(m): 3:33pm On Nov 14, 2013 PLEASE..! If you are reading this post deliberately or by chance,I will beg you to be very objective and learn from this rather than criticizing or condemning how the presentation is made ,this is my personal experiences and may not apply to every body, follow the thread and learn, this post is not intending to showcase my writing skills or to down-grade any career or advertise any establishment, however it is meant to encourage the minds of many intelligent unemployed graduate out there through my own past experience..Thank you.
Now,let me start from my school days,..Many years ago in the University my aims and objectives like any other undergraduate is to struggle hard to graduate with good grade, 2:1 grade at least, leave the school get a wonderful job that can fetch me good money to start life possibly getting another degree or starting a family, this is always our dreams back at school. But personally I was wrong, life in the campus is quite different from the outside life. Please, at this juncture,I am talking to those of us that are from an average family and not those whose parent had already starched money into their bank account or reserve a position for in a big conglomerate.
Now, I left school for my NYSC like many of us did, I was too much in a hurry to finish my NYSC because I believe my certificate is a straight ticket to work in Shell ,NNPC,GLO, MTN, NLG, GTBANK, HALLIBURTON,CHEVRON just name them, these establishments are very good places to work no doubt,I was known in all test venue all over the country writing one test or the other and after a lot of frustrated attempt, I remember the Federal government jobs in all the Ministries including state ministries, tried the Nigerian police, Army ,Navy ,Air force,Road safety and so on and so forth..No Godfather No Job..Even after a successful Aptitude Test and interviews no Job, I AM getting older, my age is disappointing me to get certain good Job that I desired, earlier however, along the line, during my Youth service, I was introduced to teaching but I ended up quarreling with my adviser even though I enjoyed teaching during the time I served as a youth corper.
Now, am jobless but intelligent, the flashes of my NYSC days when I was posted to a secondary school as a teacher kept coming in..TEACHER!! God forbid Who want to be a TEACHER ,after all David Osho was my course mate in school He is presently with Chevron..I am a graduate of Geophysics too so why would you wish me such a thing that was always my reaction...I remain jobless while so many job vacancies were been advertised every day from old and new schools looking for qualify and intelligent teachers all over Nigeria.
After many years of roaming about the street of Lagos ,Abuja, Portharcourt, Ibadan etc. I settled down for a private school where I was completely used up every day for a pay as low as N 7,000.00 PER month incredible..!(not exaggerating here) very small to start with you may say.
But hear this, after a while I began to study the system gather money to develop myself in the field and fortunately things started changing in the educational sector in Nigeria, Teachers started earning respect from people. Thank God and the NTI-(National Teacher's Institute) and TRCN (Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria) as they Started standardizing the profession.
Through hard work however,I learnt the rudiment of teaching and I started having different views and understanding about some schools in Nigeria running both Nigerian and British curriculum in education, I then apply to one of the International school around after my PGDip Ed. and sincerely speaking ,I never thought I could enjoy teaching not only by the act but by what one could learn and gain from this type of high caliber secondary schools and other government schools in Nigeria.
So now,if you are in the line of education already I congratulate you. Imagine the multitude of NYSC graduates passing out and other intelligent graduates from Higher Institutions roaming the street claiming to be graduate of Universities and polytechnics wasting away looking for job that is NOT even available.
When moving around Lagos one day I remember with great pity how many like me refusing to start something small...Please, let us re-think and plan for ourselves you can pursue your dream but don't relegate any profession it could be your saving grace..WE ALL CAN NOT BE TEACHERS BUT YOU CAN AS WELL APPRECIATE THIS NOBLE PROFESSION.
NOW APART FROM THE CONVENTIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS LIKE THE ONE YOU AND I ATTENDED WHICH IS ACTUALLY BETTER NOW IN NIGERIA TO START A CAREER IN TEACHING,...WE NOW HAVE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS IN NIGERIA OPERATING ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL AND PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW THAT THEY PAY VERY WELL.
Schools Like....
Grange school Lagos. Day waterman college ASU Ogun State. Dowen College Lagos. Olashore International School(OIS) Osun State. Atlantic Hall lagos. British International School.(BIS) Redeemers International school Lagos. Bloombred International secondary school Portharcourt. Temple school Lagos. Corona School. Meadow Hall School. Pampers School and so many others too numerous to mention.
These are AISEN Schools,(Association of International Schools Educators of Nigeria (AISEN ).However, not all schools using the word 'International' belong to AISEN...check this site(http://www.aisenconference.com/)They operate different salary structures for their staff and provides training for them both local and international some of these schools start from as low as N 100,000.00. The method of teaching is technologically based with the use of ICT and modern facilities, Recently a friend of mine got a job as a Mathematics teacher and they started with N 250,000.00 per month excluding accommodation and other benefits, please I am not exaggerating here to amuse any body also not trying to advertise the schools my point is that if you are intelligent teaching is one career that is very lucrative now in Nigeria and will expose you positively.
What you need is to be qualify as a professional in the field, do one or two courses in education and if you already had one, good luck.!
I work in one of the Schools listed above and my orientations about teaching had so far changed,I have my PGDip. Ed and also doing my M.Ed. Internal training from the school helped me with some International recognize certification in education now. I felt I should let you know this little secret, which is not for everybody though!
Please, Joblessness could lead to frustration..Until you start to teach you wouldn't know you are a good teacher, make a move now and as you start small you will soon become large..! God bless you. 8 Likes |

biggal: PART 2 OF MY TEACHING STORY
I submitted my application to many schools but 3 called me, I went for 2. Fortunately for dat school they conducted all d stages d same day. The theory, oral n micro teaching. I was asked to teach percentage during d micro teaching n God saw me tru. I was taken among 23 teachers dat came. I was offered as much as 18k n I gladly accepted. After one year we wrote an internal exam n I scored 89percent n was promoted to teach basic 6. With 2k increment in my salary. Tanx to d ppl in dis thread cos they opened my eyes to see dat am being used. I have written 5 books n published 3 with childrens bk n novel inclusive but neva saw it as somfin dat can giv me edge ova odas until Goldendr said it. Am very gud in maths n English so far I hv gotten one invite. But my fellow teachers my boss is very gud to me das why I find it difficult to live him. But I hv made up my mind. How will I handle him plss cos he neva wanted me to liv hence he's gud to me nt in terms of mony ooo

i like this your style ooo. Im thinking of leaving where i am currently by december. But i have always been afraid of staying idle after then incase i dont get anything by then cos i have never been idle since graduation. Thanks bro; this came at the right time! My sister be sure of yourself first. You can get around and see up things at the different tutorial centres in your area and close by. JAMB lessons will soon start, GCE registration is on so they'll soon kick into gear. Get like 3 or 4 places around. In some areas, it's like 1k-2k per period but other areas like where I stay where the tutorial centres don't bill the students much, it's like 5h but never go lower than 5h. From those places you can get private home teaching to supplement everything. 2 Likes |

As for International schools, yes, but not all because there is AISIEN a body or association of international schools with foreign affiliatiom or partnership. Many schools that bears international, there nothing international about (pay wise, laboratory wise and working conditions) them not the mention they are not members of AISIEN. Some high schools are members of AISIEN but many are 'Kereje'. Comprehensive, high, low are just figure head title. 3. For someome without any teaching experience, starting around is the best, then after a year you can move out because you have gathered experience.
Thanks boss...I studied education and I'm hoping to bounce into one of those 'grade A schools' |

1. Yea, thanks for your time |
