Windbreaker in plantain production I have heard a lot of false insinuation about using windbreakers for plantain. Most intending farmers I meet always tell me they read it online that windbreakers is important in plantain production. Making windbreakers are dependent on two factors, weather condition of an area and the specie of plantain. First of all, most of the videos and articles being watched and read online are from countries where the velocity of wind is high and instructions are being given to plantain farmers to plant windbreakers. These countries also cultivate tall specie of plantain cultivar that falls easily due to high wind. Mostv areas where plantain are cultivated in Nigeria are not susceptible to wind. If your plantain is falling, your plantain farm might be under the attack of nematode eating up the stem or diseases through the use of untreated suckers. If you are planting a tree as windbreaker, you may be reducing the yield of your plantain as good aeration of the plantain farm will be prevented. |

The other time,I talked about windbreaker in plantain production. The next to talk about is the soil in which your plantain to be cultivated. Soil analysis and testing is very important in agriculture Will be explain more later on. |

You study agric does not make you a farmer or agropreneur. Practical experience is far apart from theoretical know!edge. Its only when you have a feel of what goes on on the farm, you will know better. Goodnight. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Checking on my friends plantain farm who was excited about double bunch plantain and purchase thousands of suckers some years back to share his experience about production cost and, yield. Good staking, demand more manure, low yield are all the characteristic of this sucker. Experience tells me that I need to have some production statistics about any improved varieties before adopting it. My friend has now being disturbing me to give him my suckers to reestablish the farm.

Getting suckers from the wild specie will only do more harm to your plantain business as most does not fruit. Looking at cheap source will have a great impact on the long run. Get good improved suckers. |

Cultivating plantain requires some expertise different for other crops. I was on a farm recently where the planting were not properly done. No layout, irregular planting space,no fertilisation,no weeding etc. Give attention to your plantain farm to yield optimum result for you. |

In the early days of your plant, keep them moist but not too wet as they don’t have leaves yet to evaporate the water. plantain does not like waterlogged land. Moist, dry land is suitable |
