African telecom giant MTN appoints Indian in key position

NEW DELHI: MTN, Africa's largest wireless operator, has appointed India-born executive, Rahul De, as its chief marketing officer for the Nigerian market.

De has been with the group for many years and is credited with turning around MTN's Ghana operations where he was the marketing head for 4 years.

Nigeria is the largest market for MTN in terms of subscribers. At 61 million customers and revenue of almost $4 billion annually, it contributes 30 per cent to MTN group's revenues.

Out of that $4 billion, only less than 5% is used for re-investment in Nigeria cos the the remaining 95% na big capital flight...Airtel did same when they first came to Nigeria, over #1-2billion waz shipped out of the country.
There is nothing our govt can do about this so enjoy the ride....

GLO has the cheapest call rates to all networks. So I support GLO with all my calls. Just that sometimes, you call and won't hear anything while the credit runs. MTN has recently brought down their call rates too. But MTN is best for browsing.

ETISALAT has lost it all, very high call rates, used to be best for browsing but it's all Wack now. I don't know where AIRTEL is right now.

We have Globacom owned by a Nigerian. In as much as the amount is staggering, allowing the competition will help in efficiency.

If MTN spends less than 6% on reinvestment, 61M Nigerians would not be their customers today. By the way, MTN is a publicly traded company, you can buy shares and partake in their dividend payments. We need more companies like MTN not less.

I think they are the most reliable network in Nigeria.

I'm not saying they are Good but just better than others as far as am concerned.

i think you might need to get your information straight cos at the last time i checked- though MTN Nigeria is not listed with the NSE, it sells private placements in Nigeria and i hear Nigeria shareholders have about 25% stake in the company (as at 2013) and it should have risen beyond that......

They are the WORST i have come across ALL MY LIFE, Crazy network, CRAPPY internet service, high call rates, sub-standard service provision, (CRAPPY SERVICE PROVIDeR IN ENTIRETY). To make matters worse, should you have below 30 naira, kpele o, they'll tell you that you dont have sufficient credit to make call. Call 200, and the beasts will tell to remove your battery and put it back then on you phone. Lobatan!!! Come obey see whether you go still see N1. Hmmmmmmm. My account balance until i recharged again was 0:00 naira. The battery removal never worked anyway, instead i was left with 0:00 naira abi??

Yet they have refused to deploy LTE across the country. not even around popular cities like Lagos and Abuja.
