hottyarewa:I understand you. I will advise you to shun the thought of seeking help or housing from anybody. Some people are all for it and will accomodate you in an heartbeat, other people wont do it and this is not because they are not good people, its because we are different people who have things we can tolerate and things we cannot. I was housed by a friend for a day and I got my apartment the next day and moved in. I didn't have a bed then but I bought blanket and sheet and I slept on the carpet. Heck, the electricity was not not even on, I bought candles. I had prepared for my accommodation at least 6 months straight before I left Nigeria. So I wasn't bothered. She has even done more than enough to even accommodate me, taking me places and all that. It is when we are expecting too much from other people not forgetting that we are all humans and different individuals that we begin to feel disappointment. This is America, everybody has their own struggles 12 Likes |

godG: The bolded part would only apply to those who have genuine intention of coming to the USA for school. You are also smart that you did your home work while still in Nigeria. Many people won't do anything and expect manna from heaven. Personally, I don't have any problem using the F-1 visa route to "escape" to America. I would do that too if I had no money to pay. But before going through that route, I would do my research well before coming, get my temporary accommodation sorted out, and have enough cash to survive my first 6-12 months in America. Many veterans with vast experience of 'life in the USA' come here always to advise people and constantly remind them to be well prepared in form of cash and information before coming to the U.S; yet, some won't listen and even go ahead to curse such people out. Some won't even come straight and will be telling lies about their conditions and intentions. For those still in Nigeria, I beg you to please come with enough money and be well prepared before travelling. While it is true that whatever one is passing through isn't permanent, I would not want to come to America without money or plans for my accommodation. Life in America is not easy for first timers. Be prepared. 7 Likes |

GboyegaD: That's the spirit!!! Unfortunately, people you help sometimes can abuse the privilege causing you some substantial loss. It happens a lot here that's why some people begin to change or help under certain conditions. Among the ibos, there's a name that is "Ogomegbulam"- let my "good deeds" not kill me. Caution is the watchword here guys!!! |

I just wish people could see beyond their nose and help themselves. I understand why people will do anything to leave naija but I dont understand why they wont do anything to make the transition easy for them. Telling people to plan appropriately before coming as earned me so much enemies because they just believe you dont want them to come America as if you are the consular. That said, I strongly advise that we keep helping ourselves because the more the unity, the better we become in this country but when we need help, we should understand that people are different and we have different level of tolerance. godG: Thank you for preaching the "Home work" story here! Unfortunately most people who travel here are first time travelers and make more mistakes. Doing a quick online search about the city your gonna arrive to cannot be overemphasized, knowing how to move around, finding stores for immediate needs, making reservations and even where your church is located can all be super important. I remember when I arrived here,it was my first time in the U.S. But not my first time abroad... Settling down in Daytona beach wasn't so overwhelming because I had done some homework about how to solve my immediate needs...before I found my friend in the same school I had already settled in a hotel and had a 5hour sleep. |

MsNas:I've learnt to ignore so many pple on here. This was a girl that contacted me out of the blue via email..Telling me she was coming this Thursday to Houston if I could come pick her up at the airport and help accomodate her for a few days..which I found no problem with.I adviced her since you going to be studying and staying in Houston I have a free masters bedroom which is currently empty..I told her it will go for 500usd a month light and water inclusive in the 500..She told me 500 is much, that is there not one below 400 that is there work she can do in Houston to pay bills,I said no work, you need legal documents...,I should send her the pictures of the room. I told her I would walk round the house later and send her pictures I just came back from work,it's 8am,ive been awake all night working.I sent her couple of messages till today she never replied..Where did I go wrong?Telling me God pass me..This is a girl,I'd wanted to introduce to my girlfriend cause my girl attends Texas southern university,so that she will feel at home..Since,helping someone on this thread is a crime now...then it needs to stop. |

stevecrun: A large bedroom including utility at $500 in a city.... they should be dancing and rejoicing. Their mates that came straight to NYC are tasting serious mehmeh now. That's about $1100/mo here. Talking about work on day one. I see lot of newcomers here trying to speed up things over night. I hope journey of 2-4 years won't be everlasting one for them. |

Stewee: Daytona Beach, nice city.... Good Naija community (minus the rumors).... @topic of accommodation, I won't even bother looking for the genesis of the topic but will just throw this advice; before leaving Nigeria, research your options. Your first option should always be relatives, then school organized accommodation..... Thirdly look for available friends before approaching strangers.... Nigerians in America can be cruel, I have had relations desert me.... I have had strangers accommodate me I have accommodated strangers and will continue to do so (But this is only for a short time).... But I always say not everyone is like me.... I really feel this issue should have been handled by both parties involved privately. (But IMHO, but of you were wrong) 3 Likes |
