[That is nigeria my country..quote author=bugs2 post=37342803]The Federal Government yesterday said Nigeria spends N16 billion yearly on importing tomatoes. Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sonny Echono, who puts the country’s domestic demand for tomatoes at 2.3 million tonnes, said the country only produces 1.8 million tonnes yearly. Echono, who spoke at a workshop on “Development and application of post-harvest handling model for horticural Crops” in Abuja, added that 750, 000 tonnes of tomatoes is lost to post-harvest. He said: “Horticultural crops, because of their delicate nature face tremendous post-harvest challenges. In Nigeria, specifically, tomatoes has the highest priorities with domestic demand of 2.3 million tonnes of fresh production annually, national production of 1.8 million tonnes, waste of over 750, 000 tonnes and an import bill of N16 billion to make up for shortfall in local production. “Post-harvest losses have been estimated to range between five and 20 per cent for grains; 20 per cent for fish and as high as between 50 and 60 per cent for tubers, fruits and vegetables.” Mr. Echono, who was represented by the Director, Agribusiness and Market Development, Engr. Jatto Ohiare, said N717 million is spent by the country in importing citrus. Echono said the horticultural sector is faced with problem of processing and post-harvest handling, adding that 1.53 million tonnes of citrus production is lost yearly. He added that government is working with private sector to tackle post-harvest challenges. He said: “Citrus has national production of 3.48 million tonnes, contributing about 29.71 per cent of the world’s production and 81.93 per cent of Africa’s total output. However, 1.53 million tonnes of citrus production is lost annually as waste while an annual import of N717 million has been recorded. “The government of Nigeria among other activities and in partnership with the private sector is tackling this through the establishment of the Staple Crop Processing Zones where horticultural crops processing plants are being built and associated clusters of producers identified and assisted with necessary inputs/infrastructures. “The establishment of two export crop handling, preservation and conditioning centres.” Source: http://monitor9ja.com/2015/08/nigeria-spends-n16b-yearly-importing-tomatoes/[/quote] |

Land is wasting, yes but where are the lands. Hope you know how difficult it is to get land even when the purpose is for farming, because of a corrupt system. I know so many youths who care lass about white collar jobs but wants to farm. Even those with the jobs still wanna farm. Freemanan: |

Like seriously #i16b on tomatoes only when we we have all the resources we have to plant and cultivate better improved species of tomatoes on our wonderful soil by our unemloyed youth seeking for how to improve this country through their contributions in any form. God should help us from the snare of corruptions in this our dear nation because of some stupid leader who are not ready to invest in agriculture who basically look out for the money they can only loot at the expense of providing loans for farmers for the prouduction of cash and arable crops which can help us to be less reliant on impotation... The thunder that will fire you people is still doing push up in Ijebu land... |

Freemanan:Less than 5% of Britons are farmers, yet they feed their country and export food. To farm profitably you need some level of mechanisation and that costs money. And also, the government need to make youths realise it is not compulsory for everyone to be a graduate. Why should I go through the rigour of undergraduate training and wind up a farmer? |

ADAMUdaCOWBOY: Being a graduate farmer even gives one an edge so the University education is not a waste. Being a farmer is beyond hoes and cutlasses, it is becoming more technical by the day as Agricultural output is no longer determined by land size but innovative knowledge. Today, one can harvest 10tonnes of sweet potatoes from a 50ft by 100ft plot of land even within an urban area without even touching a hoe or a cutlass while most who are still doing it the traditional way may not even achieve that from an acre with the back breaking labour involved. 3 Likes |

The issue is not that Nigerians can not produce enough Tomato the problem is that the importers would not invest in the local farmers they prefer to invest in foreign goods 1 Like |
