Chairman of PSC, Sir Mike Okiro, who confirmed this in Abuja yesterday, said: “The monitoring team will have the powers to stop VIPs on the highways, airports and so on, for confirmation of their status and that of the policemen attached to them.”

A statement by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Information PSC, quotes Okiro as warning that “any erring VIP or policeman caught in such unauthorised beat, will be prosecuted.”

Well that is all nicely put and indeed a powerful statement of intent. The problem here is the police service commission hasn't come out with a clear template on who and who amongst the numerous Nigerian VIP's would be entitled to have police security or escort. So the question of a team that will enforce compliance with Mr President's directives would be premature and a waste of time and amounts to the usual eye service. Lets us Nigerians know clearly who are entitled and who aren't chances are we as citizens might do a better job of whistle blowing on who are still using police escorts!!

Exactly my thought. I've never seen such greedy elites like those in Nigeria. They would have government spend just about everything conceivable on them- I can wager save for the embarrassment of the stench of their poop, they would have had people taking poop out their assess for them so they don't have to do the pushing!

They have the money and private security firms abound, let them hire some officials if they need some.

As I type this, there are various heavily armed mobile policemen guarding the homes of some so called big men in my neighborhood. The police as an institution in Nigeria needs more than this cameo-like actions to restore it back to what it should be. Just go to common Ghana and see how force and paramilitary men are properly kitted and you will instantly be hungry to join one of them.
